  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DAVINCI RESOLVE and ***HACKINTOSH***

Hey Luigi,
So your saying that machete already comes with the efi strings for a GTX 570 or 580? There are just a few other things mentioned above that have to be tweaked in addition to the efi strings? I saw the latest Chimera release states they have added the GTX 570 ID. http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2011/09/chimera-154-update-facetime-fix.html

ciao Jeremiah ;)

CHIMERA same chamaleon an this support only 1 gpu.....
Efi string is for inject gpu whit file com.apple.boot.plist (efi string) , this metod is easy ,use gfxutil for found PCIe adresse and convent HEX.is for 1 or more GPU.

Machete patch dsdt , directly to the ACPI table, brings better and much more fluid system. But is very complicate to make.

well add this id to NVDAGF100Hal.kext.
id: x108110de&0xffe0ffff --> this is for gtx 570
and try , is possible to delete AppleGraphicsPowerManagement kext for best performance, try.

thanks
Luigi

Well I will definitely converse with you when I buy the equipment. thanks.

Thanks guys,
40000 visits in a short time, I'm flattered.
This is why I prepared a little surprise, I updated "Machete" to version 3 .
Includes beta support for 570/580/590(only 1 gpu for gtx 590) , and videos tutorial step by step.
Follow the tutorials in this series:
1. part1
2. part3
4. Part4 +Part4a+ Part4b have photos, do a reboot at the end
5. Part5, this being update to 10.7.1.

I'm here if you have questions.
The GTX supports, are of the EVGA model.

thanks
Luigi

Awesome!!!!! That fixes my probs. Now to decide if I go cheap with 3 570s or go for the 3 580s so I can play some nice games ;).

WOW!
Exactly what the doctor ordered!
I am tempted to go with 1xGTX590 as is cheaper than 3x570 and presume much cooler.
Do I need another card for GUI?
What size power supply is recommended?

I would definitely get a separate card for the GUI. And the 590 I assume is only faster because of it's dual GPUs, which currently with this setup, only one is working. I would love to run dual GTX 590s, but if only one GPU each is functioning I rather go with triple 470s or 480s.

I am very excited about this project you have here. VERY WELL DONE! I have been waiting for the new MacPro's to come out however, now I am thinking I will go this route instead. I would be able to buy another redrocket card with the money I save! :)
Couple of questions... How does performance compare to MacPro? Does having the extra CPU in the MacPro's make a difference or is it better to use more GPU's and faster memory in the Hackintosh? From what it looks like your system can do more than I need just wondering.
How does stability compare? None of my PC's I have built have been as stable as my Mac's, but I think that may have more to do with Windows vs OSX than hardware.
Also in the new Machete 3 do you need 3 GTX580's or will 2 work?
Thanks again for all your work!

Ciao Sean,
Well I must point out one thing, that the OSX kernel supports up to 4 GPU, here is understood to have the choice of Blackmagic 3 gpu cuda, and 1 for the GUI, go to Windows would mean not limit the gpu.
Accurate even support in my installer to be in beta, also because 'I can not buy graphics cards to make an installer, then I would go with caution.
I'm waiting for my RED Epic and from what I experienced so far with files of 5k, hdrx, 3d the best solution for me to be 2, Redrocket, and 2 GPU 570 or 580 with a nice 6-core CPU, but also 2 590 would not hurt, and then in windows use all 4 gpu. I know that the biggest problem now is related to ProRes, but you can always use a Hackintosh to convert DPX and then start it in windows and make the correction, I'm also thinking of me as I have several people using this codec and I've never ProRes used with windows.
But in this nice forum there are many colors that certainly will give good sound advice.
For when it concerns the stability 'of the system and' very good compared to a MacPro I have never had any problems other than the original one, but I always made a choice nearest hardware compatible to the Mac Pro.
We must also admit that Windows 7 and 'a good and stable right now so I'm not able to fully exploit the next Resolve, so if I can afford Resolve issues for windows and then make a choice appropriate to its style of work, may otherwise try to make a good hackintosh with 2 gtx 570, and 2 redrocket and begin to try if you like it keep it otherwise will install Windows 7.

thanks
Luigi

On Davinci Resolve in OS X is it worth the $50 more per card to go with the 580s over the 570s? I plan to run three total cards, 1 GUI, and 2 GPU. No Red Rocket for now. Also will the graphics memory come into play, should I go with the higher memory cards like the 570 with 2560MB as opposed to the 1280MB or 1536MB version in the 580s case? Thanks.

Hi Luigi

I have the GTX 580 running on my hackintosh thanks to you:) However, Premiere Pro now hangs once open - any ideas? Afftereffects works even with r3d....

HACKINTOSH VIA KAKEWALK 4.1.0 installed (cuda missing?
Board: GA-G41M-ES2L
2.33 GHz Quad-Core
Grafik: GTX 580

Thanks
Brian
8 gig ram (however osx see's only 4gig...?)

Ciao Brian ,
um Adobe hang, when you go in playback or when open ?
your sytem is mac pro 3.1 or 4.1?

downlaod cuda here 4.0.50 :

http://www.nvidia.com/object/mac-driver-archive.html

and you have changed driver GeforceGL ?

download here and replace.
https://rapidshare.com/files/118172482/Archivio2.zip try .

and delete this KEXT in System Library Extensions.
AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext

REPAIR PERMISSION whit disk utility and REBOOT.
Try ...

Any luck in making the NVIDIA dual GPU cards work on OSX? (with both GPUs?).

I would like to give that a shot. I wonder how one of those cards would stack against two Quadros... or how three of those cards with a total of 6 GPUs would stack against three Quadro 4000s with 3 GPUs.

Would DaVinci support 6 GPUs?

I think it's limited to 3 or 4 cards - on a Mac. Luigi said earlier that for applications that use CUDA, it's the number of CUDA cores that are relevant - which makes the GTX's the better choice. However, they draw quite a bit more power, so you must take a very big PSU into account. Quadros are better designed for continuos, professional work (less heat, less noise, lower power consumption).

Strange thing is that after installing CUDA drivers, my (single) GTX 570 stopped working properly. Again I had to reinstall Lion (I always keep a 10.6.8 HD that I can mirror/restore to the system HD, so it doesn't take too long), do the usual kext edits and not install CUDA. I read somewhere that one has to install CUDA first, and then insert the GTX card . . . don't know if it's true, but I had enough with time consuming experimentations. Perhaps I do it wrong all the time, perhaps it's my old motherboard. I use my hackintosh now for what I primarily used it, for music production. For colour correction, I wait for the Windows version of Resolve, or maybe for Adobe Speedgrade. Whatever is released first and is affordable.

But I'll keep following this thread here, it's very interesting. Although I never could profit from the Machete installer, it works for others, which is very nice. Good work, Luigi!

The 5xx series doesn't seem to work for Video applications in general. Seems the card is only partly supported. CUDA works fine, however the Apple accelerated stuff seems flacky.

Same issue happens if you try and use a 5xx card for the GUI of Resolve.

looks like it's mostly working now - only problem, on start up if I have both monitors connected, the system hangs. Once system is up, I can connect the other monitor and have the GTX 580 running both cards. Also it only works when set to 60Hertz (50 Hertz works only when one monitor is running). Any idea how to get rid of the boot problem?

Thanks

Thanks Philipp,
yes this is right direction ;) Resolve in windows = POOOWERRR and Velocity in any configuration. Even if I do not like windows but Blackmagic is doing a great strategy.

post here Com.apple.boot.plist or org.chameleon.Boot.plist (if you have new chameleon) .I will see. You have monitor Apple or you have plasma or lcd in gtx 580 dvi ?
Only one question Brian , in premiere 5.5 work good gtx 580 1.5gb? model?

thanks
