  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CPU Cost

Because of a bent pin in an EVF cable my CPU board shorted out. It seems that a new board is $4700 plus $200 for labor. I am somewhat surprised by this price for the board.
anyone else experienced this replacement cost?

Peter

Yikes! That's truly scary that a bent pin on a cable could do so much damage, i wonder how many times this has happened. Bending a cable pin and losing $5000? I'd have to shoot myself. I thought that the hardware had better protection than that, though I'm a software engineer and not very knowledgeable on the hardware side of things. But still, how the hell does the EVF fry the main CPU? Lol, now i'll be constantly checking my cables.

EDIT: Hopefully Epic has better hardware protection and modularity for cheaper component replacement.

Is that because you always walk very close to the line? :-)

Hi Jim,

I like living on the edge, otherwise I would have worked in a bank and retired long ago.

It seems a rather unusal contract condition that potentially disadvantages a customer after spending many thousand of dollars with you company. "Caveat emptor" as the say in Latin.

Hi Steven,

I never said "that somebody physically damaging some equipment REALLY equates to that equipment being beta quality?" I wrote "I have never beta tested for Sony either." I don't see any connection between the two statements.

The Uk Law applies to goods sold in the UK, RED has started selling accessories in the UK so it might be of interest to some people here.

So your laptop still is usable, have you inquired if the manufacture will fix it free of charge? Germany has pretty strict consumer laws as well. BTW it's very long time since I last used an ethernet port on my laptop.

If you don't like my posts I would appreciate it if you could add me to your ignore list, then your time wont be wasted reading my posts.

Best,

Stephen

Edit can I see some links to your work, nice to have some perspective on who I am talking to.

Back to your original question "Imagine what the costs would be on a $200K Sony F23." If the damage was caused by attaching a Sony viewfinder then in all probability nothing.

Personally I have always been bothered by "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone with a bad attitude."

Look dude, my point is: the repair costs for major compnent damage are not out of line compared with the cost of the camera.

Will Sony repair your $200K camera free of charge if you damage it? Maybe. Even you admit you aren't sure.

Will Red repair your $17.5K camera free of charge if you damage it? No.

But, I'd rather pocket the $187,500 difference and still be ahead of the game. And shoot 4X as may pixels along the way.

NONE of which has anything to do with "beta testing" the camera. The comment was snarky. And belies your oft-too-repeated claims of neutrality.

PS #1 - If you want examples of my work, you're gonna have to come see one of my datacenters.

PS #2- I like the "Bad attitude" stance. I'm considering personally adopting it for disingenuous forum-jockeys.

Hi Steve,

Are you not concerned that major component damage can occur by attaching a viewfinder made by Red to a Red camera?
It's clearly seems perfectly acceptable to you, which I find most interesting.

Having first shot with a RED with Build 8, both the camera & software were officially beta, release build 21 just got withdrawn, there are still a few issues. Build 16 seemed the most stable. I have never beta tested a Sony camera as I said mentioned earlier, fact rather than snarky comment.

Personally I prefer to work with equipment that's bullet proof, my reputation depends on it. In November I shot with 35mm Film, HDW 750, Canon 5DMKII & an EX3 everything worked flawlessly. Provisionally I had 2 Red jobs one went to 35mm as it was cheaper the other was cancelled.

Stephen

FWIW, I've had a bad hirose cable blow a board on a sony f900 and on the lens and it cost about $8k to fix. I have had to pay quite a lot on repairs for sony decks also. The idea that sony fixes stuff for free is would be great but not realistic from my experience.

You left out the part about a bent pin which is putting the equipment in a warranty voiding condition. Quite standard practice. Having worked in product design, I can tell you a bent pin is not something you can always protect against. That's like saying you have to protect against arbitrary shorting across any line even ones that should never see power. That's not practical.

Should I be concerned if I plug my monitor cable with bent pins in to my video card and damage it? Should the video card manufacturer replace it?

I don't expect that in either case.

Incidentally, I've never personally seen a petulant troll either. Given that it's a fact, even if completely unrelated to the conversation at hand, should mean that there's no implication in that comment, right?

Peter, I just read the email exchange between you and the RMA dept. We never stated that the bent pin on the EVF CABLE that directly caused the damage. I will PM you with more...

Since this matter is already public knowledge, it could be helpful to reveal what happened so we could develop best-practices to avoid it. I know I want to avoid damage like this at all cost.

Seconded! :yikes:

Hi Brent,

It would be interesing to know what the RMA dept said caused the problem.

Perhaps Sony are frightened of me, I did fromally reject a 550 camera system about 15 years ago, the camera got sent to the UK & then Japan for evaluation, on return it was still hopefully inadequate, after 5 months of discussions Sony refunded the entire order. Apparantly I was the only person in the world that was not blown away by that camera.

Are you saying you don't know if such free repair is actually Sony company policy or general practice after all?

Interesting.

You are an amazing man Stephen Williams... The only person in the world! And what does 'hopefully inadequate' means?

Hi,

I can be a major pain in the ass if I want, it's very rare that I have to! I never except second rate equipment that does not live up to it's claims. If your a yes man, you get what you deserve.

Best,

Stephen

Hi Carmel,

I was the only person to complain so they said,I've heard that before!, the camera was supposed to be a replacement for 35mm film and better than the DVW 700. Back to back the DVW 700 kicked it into the ground. Some people want the best, some are visually illiterate, just because a Sony rep says 'its not so bad' does not mean I have to accept $100,000 of kit. Sony claimed it was the lens LOL, a garage who changed a wheel bearing on my car said it was the tyres making the noise, they just fitted a bad part and eventually redid the repair.

absolutely..

absolutely..

Ended up with a DVW 700, that camera is still in daily use by the facility that bought it, still got the original drum heads, myself being a non smoker probably has a lot to do with that.

When I bump into that Sony rep at IBC, he is never that pleased to see me, no doubt the commision he lost was conciderable.

Sorry, I do not discuss specific customer situations publicly. That is between RED and RED's customer on a one-on-one basis.
