Checking interest for 4k Skyworth LED TV Group Buy

...I've now sent two more emails and no response yet since the initial response...

My hunch: Going up the chain-of-command in China.

Warranty/Replacement/Trouble Solution:

Lets say for sake of argument there are 30 people in this group buy, at $1400 each.

I would like to think that the fail rate for these TVs is <= 10%.

My suggestion?

Purchase 3 extra TVs for $4200. (avg price $140 per member.)

Hold on to them for a period of time (6 months?) .

If by June we haven't had any massive failures, sell off two of them, probably at a profit, ($3k ea on ebay sound nuts?) and redistribute that money ($200ea) among the members, and keep the third around in case someone's fails a year down the line.

We all end up -saving- an additional $60 (although paying a bit more up front to do so) and have the peace of mind knowing that our $1400 display isn't going to be dead weight if it dies.

Or don't sell any of them. Hold on to all three for years, and just know that if you're one of the first three to have their TV die, you're good to go.
------

TL;DR: Would you pay $1540 for a 50"4k TV with a $200 rebate down the road, and a "Purchase Protection Plan"?

Good plan... in theory. But logistically untenable. I doubt that Matt wants to be responsible for storing, shipping, etc. of the extra sets. And though I think by and large those among us are honorable, there is the potential for one or more of us to act in a devious manner to finagle a free set. Of course you could make the applicant send their set back to Matt but then Matt has to dispose of the damn thing. I think we just run like the Wildebeest and hope the Lion of failure kills someone else's set instead of ours.

hahaha yeah sorry guys, I'm just setting this up, not backing the deal in any way with a warranty or replacement plan (I make nothing from this, I don't work for Skyworth)... I was interested in a 4k tv myself and thought this could benefit others as well. I have no problem setting it up but once Skyworth sets up the specifics (price, payment, shipping, etc..) it's all up to you... I'm not going to collect any money or deal with shipping or being a middle man... so we will see how this goes. I have a job and a fiancee haha

Really? I have more faith in us than that. Doesn't one of us own a store or a rental house or something? Hell could we leave 'em with Red or Lightiron or whatever? I think the wildebeest/lion thing is cute until its your set that dies.

Phil

Keep in mind nothing is official and set in stone yet. Communicating across the world is difficult, especially with the language barrier. I am still waiting to hear back from Skyworth after the initial email in which I posted the details in the original post. So I have questions waiting to be answered as well as a few concerns and important details. Hopefully I'll have updates soon. I'm trying guys!

Sure, not a problem as long as everyone has the right to opt out of buying the "warranty" sets. I just don't think it should be mandatory.

Matt, really appreciate you taking the initiative here and spending the time trying to make this work. You're a better man than me Gunga Din.

Matt,
You might have scared them a bit. Point them to this site, let them know these are 'film makers' wanting a monitor, not 'Best Buy' shoppers wanting a deal on a TV set to watch the super bowl on !
Personally I would be OK with them not installing a tuner or coax input on them, to reassure it is not going to end up in homes for 'TV' type viewing.
Heck, even disable 1920x1080 mode too. Just 4K.
Just some thoughts...

already did point them to this thread as soon as I created it. I made this post after they first said they would sell as long as we didn't use it for tv. Then I created this thread, then emailed them with a link and a few questions. Hadn't heard back so I emailed them again. Just waiting for a response...

I got a reply. They said they. Can only sell to me if I don't use it for television.

yeah, thats why I created this thread. But after people had a few questions I emailed them back with a link to this thread as well as the questions. Still havent gotten a response from that.

I have no problem representing to them that the panel will be used in an editing studio for non-television purposes, such as QC monitoring and client approval of edited footage shot-w-4K cameras. How's that?

yeah, thats what I said. I said it would be strictly for review of our own 4k+ acquired images.

Pery Ho is in main land China.
can anyone ask him to do the test ?
He is a big Red in China right ?

Also just spoke to Zhang Ming (Reduser) who is located in China, and here is what he had to say about the tv's:

I saw skyworth and LG and Hisense, honestly I prefer Hisense a little bit for the look, while Skyworth is also great, only LG's color isn't comfortable to my eyes (that maybe some option thing, I am not sure). But I have to say I only saw their biggest 84", and didn't pay too much attention because my old 50" TV still works fine:), so I can wait for 4K 3D 60Hz TV. I am just curious about these 4K TV after all.

One of my chinese friend who is a famous pro of 3D film tech think skyworth is the best after his test, and LG is the most not-good. But their performance are very close (maybe the same chips?).

Forgot to mention, Hisense 50" and 65" is already everywhere.

I contacted Zhang Ming, a Reduser who gave me this response I posted earlier. Also Allstar Cine is the one who shot the demo video for these 4k panels so maybe you can contact him as well.
