  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Checking interest for 4k Skyworth LED TV Group Buy

I dont think you pay am import Tax here in the US unless you are Carrying it personally. Technically its an ONLINE order.

Ok Man,, Just actually read the Whole thing... I think maybe we should Set up some kind of REDUSER Procurement Thread. This 4k stuff is interesting, but Feet on the Ground and Money in the Bank Can make a BS walk... I for one see a Huge grey market gettng a Container full of these TVs. Skyworth has Ties to the Chinese Military so using them Might raise some Flags here in the US(maybe not). Im going to make some Phone calls.

Matt: Just sent you a PM. Check it out.

I think that that most important is the aspect of basic quality and reliability. No one from our part of video-cinema business except Alex (I guess) seem them in real, nobody tested them if there are some serious visible or unvisible drawbacks. I hope they aren't, but you always need to be sure before you start business. Also consistency and the level of quality control is important, so all the panels looks and interprets picture and colors same and dont vary too much from piece to piece. Some quality issues u can omit due the low price point some u just can't. It the 4K chalenge, but the good one.

I heard about bit similar case, some 27" and 30" cheap buys (around $ 400 or less) of LCD hi-res monitor over the ebay from cheap Korea manufacturers who prabably used panels which dind't passed Samsung and LG quality quality standarts.

Hey guys, just got wind of it today and can't spill all the beans as I promised not to, but.... There's a 55" UHD set hitting the US market in March or so, or about 4 months from now. MSRP is around $3300. It's an LED panel and has full ISFcc controls and all the trimmings. It's from a known name. Can't say more than that. They also have a 65" and 84". It seems like everyone is using the 84" LG panel. Those bigger ones will arrive next summer, don't have a price on them.

Should be available at AV boutique type stores and possibly Magnolia centers. Online retailers are doubtful as the distribution network for this company's products is an authorized dealer arrangement. These units will be shown at CES next month, I can talk more about it then.

I'm assuming there will be others like this and with similar pricing and market timing.

That sort of makes sense ... the "landed" US price is about double the domestic Chinese price (however I don't know if this is a Chinese panel ... if it is a "known name" then probably not.) However, in any event, when you factor in shipping, certification costs, distributor/dealer mark-ups, warranty costs, etc. they really couldn't be any less expensive for a hot, first generation product like this. While certainly an unfair comparison .... $3,300.00 is a lot better than the list price of $65,995.00 that TV Logic is quoting for their 56" 4K panel. (And ... I wonder who makes that panel for them?)

The TV Logic uses an LG panel. Exorbitant price tag aside for being one of the first on the market, the display was never anything impressive. In fact, the internal processing was pure crap, it made most everything look bad -- even proper 4K/QHD from a 4K Clipster. That panel is a lot cheaper than that now, or so I'm told. IIRC, it was under $40K [LOL] at NAB nearly a year ago. It will be on steep discount here in a few months I think. ;)

As for the 55" display I mentioned above, I don't know who makes the panel. I have a hunch I might know, but can't elaborate. Their products in the past have used panels from Hitachi, Sharp and LG, so there are plenty of options. Sharp, Toshiba and LG all make a panel that fits the bill here... So I guess you could derive from that info that the display doesn't carry one of those brand labels. ;) And it's not one of the lesser brands or Asian imports carried at Wal-Mart, Costco, Sam's, etc.. It's a brand associated with mid to high end home theatre products. They sell HDTV's, projectors and other things. And now I've probably said too much.

edit> just got word they have a 4K/UHD projector coming Q3 2013 too. Target is high-end home theatre and small venues. No other details yet.

All,
I may have a trip coming up to HK early Jan so may be to go visit them and take a look. As to shipping, a 20' container is about 2500 from China to LA, a 40' around 4K (ironic). Duty can be checked on line based on the product type, etc. which I will do. I have a good broker that can handle the import paperwork and also the shipping. The one issue is last mile delivery, so we need a local trucking company to take the container somewhere once it leaves customs hold facility.

If the units are not UL or FCC listed that could be an issue, there are test uses and some other categories in which you can bring in non certified items, but qty's are limited. UL and FCC testing runs close to 40K for one product and can take a few months and requires a few units as they do some destructive testing on the systems.

O guys, here's an update. Things look like they are getting expensive fast. Konka has been very accommodating so far. Here is their answer to some questions.

"Dear Matt,

Good evening. I bring more news here.

1.Sizes available
I’m afraid that only 65” and 84” are available. No 55” or 56” is available. 50” is only for China market, and in the near future, I don’t think the company has a plan to make it fit for international market. So will you accept 65” model? If yes, I will send you specification and price tomorrow morning.

The following messages are of our 65” and 84” models:

2.Working voltage
The TV will adapt to AC 110-240V input. It won’t be a problem in USA.

3.Interface and manual language
Except for network functions and application, all interface language can be English. Some pictures of them as follows:
Konkamenu.jpg

Manual will be provided in English for the TV system part, and other non-TV system part (e.g. network funtion) won't be English or won't be provided. Sorry for this.

4.Connections between your 4K video player and the TV
It’s HDMI or USB. Our TV is with HDMI 1.4. Is it OK with your 4K video player?

5.Product certifications
It will be safe and smooth for your import to your country if the TV is with certificate(s) approved by your country. That’s why we ask you to check import requirements and procedures about product certifications with your local Custom agent. But it could be a solution to declare to your Custom that the TV is sample for testing purpose only. If so, it’s better to ship the TV at 1 or 2 units/shipment. While, in this way, I’m afraid that our company could be hard to agree because we are quite a big group and intend to deal for mass orders. But I can confirm certification fee and time here: ETL charged USD6780 with 7weeks; FCC charged USD980 with 5weeks.

6.Payments
We hope all quantity can be in one order and handled by only one person or one entity of you. This will be of high efficiency. And I really understand your concern about no guarantee of getting the goods. But maybe you don’t know in international trade of most of industries, T/T payments (50% deposit and 50% when goods ready to ship) before shipments are quite common even for mass orders valued over millions of US Dollars. For us, we are real big headquartered in a big piece of land just in downtown Shenzhen City and a few super production bases in China. In the past 30 years, we are impossible to rely on deception to grow so big and fast. Well, I guess your feeling could be tough, but if you are really anxious, could you come to pick up the goods in our factory? After the goods are loaded to your arranged truck, you pay? Sorry to say so, but I also met many customers’ same concern like yours, but when they visit us, they didn’t worry any more. If you have better idea to help you relieve from such concern, please discuss with me.

7.Shipping
We intend to ship all in one shipment.60 units are quite possible to be over one 20’ container load. If 95% users are from USA and Canada, we hope the goods can be shipped by sea to USA, e.g. Los Angeles or New York, then you finished import procedures and pick up the goods there. If you think it could be a trouble this way, please tell me. We need to figure out an appropriate solution.

If any more issues to discuss, please remind me of them to prepare. Thanks."

So honestly, this is kind of a pain because either we can only do a New York or LA group buy unless someone is willing to handle shipping to everyone once they get to the US. That can get expensive for a 60"+ TV, and someone has to store them and handle shipping paperwork. Just seems like too much of a hassle.

It would be even a greater pain and a hassle if five figures went to a purchase of unknown, untested, uncertified electronic product shipped across the globe only to be stuck at customs.

Hmmm ... very interesting.

Maybe do a Los Angeles only shipment ? How much are they saying for a 84" one. 4K needs a big screen, they are right.

If what Jeff says turns out to be true (a 55" - 4K panel from a name manufacturer in the $3,300.00 - $4,000.00 price range, that has the necessary certifications AND A WARRANTY) then it is probably worth waiting for that ... even if it doesn't materialize until the first or second quarter of next year. BY the time we mess around with a "back channel" import ... pay the duties/tariffs/custom clearance fees/shipping/warehousing, etc. the "savings" won't be as dramatic as we originally thought. AND what happens if you get the one panel that turns out to be a clunker? You know that we won't have much (if any) warranty on the type of group buy described by Konka. AND, all of the above assumes that FCC certification has actually been given to Konka'a panels. If not, then it is another HUGE can of worms. While it is technically possible for an individual to import a small number of non-certified or non-conforming electronic products for personal use (assming you have used the right FCC paper-work) ... that would amount to 60 or so separate individual imports, with 60 or so sets of individual paper-work for each panel for each group buyer.

You never said JVC so I think you're safe ;-) Of course I could be wrong, just guessing after all. I suppose Panasonic is another possibility. Might have to go to CES this year...

Cheers - #19

Didnt seem JVC TVs for long time, (even their web dont show any). Same with Mitsubishi or Hitachi. Complicated flat panel manufacturing changed alot.

so does this mean we all have to agree to one size? How much are the 65" and 84" sets including shipping for each set? does it make more sense and is better in the long term to go with the 65" TV because of less hassle with the imports....less problems, damages? less overall cost too? and about the 50% deposit 50% shipment thing does that mean if we at least deposit half of the money they would give us a certain amount of time to deposit the rest? Like have some of the shipments on hold or do they ship half the shipments and when we pay up the rest of the deposit they ship the rest?
