  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Checking interest for 4k Skyworth LED TV Group Buy

There for sale in China so if someone is there they can check them out....

I can go by and give it a look (if its really in stores--haven't heard much here about it yet and not all stores may have them at this time). Anyone know what the hookup is from an Epic to a 4K Skyworth TV, LOL...

We have to figure that out, being able to view it with 4K content is pretty key to an evaluation. And probably to how usable it will be for what people want to use it for.

+1

Patrick,
Thanks for the links. Have you seen this tv in person by chance?

...sorry Matt , I havent seen 4KTV inperson before....

Last day i ask Hisence HongKong and Skyworth HongKong , They said that they will not import the 4K TV until May2013...................

This sounds like a good deal. I have a friend in China right now and I'm going to see if he can take a look at one. I'll let you guys know what he says after he has a chance to look at one.
He doesn't own an epic, but at least it's a pair of eyes on the monitor. I'll have him shoot some iPhone pics as well...

Certainly a +1

Thanks Matt for arranging this, very much appreciated!

I do need to blindly ask, does anyone know if shipping this set to the US will be allowed entry by US Customs? Any special declarations such as sample unit, or any other provisions need to be made so it will be customs "friendly"?

I just skyped with my friend over in China. He's got a good friend who's parents own Cal Audio...not sure what that is since I live in Brooklyn, but he's going to pass along the model number to him and see if he can get eyes on one. I told him to snap some pictures as well.
We'll see what he comes up with.
How soon do you need to know who is +1 ?
I'm on the fence because I need to know how much more this will cost to get it over to NY.
Keep us posted on additional costs...
Thanks for taking this on.

Hey Jay,

Thanks for this. I am just trying to get a rough estimate of who would be interested to pass onto Skyworth to try to sweeten the deal. Obviously the more we get the better deal we can get. So just want a bargain starting point with them. Keep us updated when and if your friend gets to check one out.

Just to update the thread, I read in another article that the contrast ratio of the unit is 1,500:1.

I'm not trying to derail the thread, just suggesting that in order to get a reasonably large group of RedUsers to throw down there needs to be some way of controlling some of the biggest risk factors. Getting the monitor, hooking it up and finding the image isn't very good falls under "you got what you paid for". Not getting it at all, not getting it for many months, not being able to get an image at all or only at odd refresh rates, etc are different risks than simple IQ deficiencies.

Cheers - #19

I'm with you Blair on the potential downsides. The upside will vary depending on the end user. There is certainly significant kudos and wow factor in your clients seeing craking pictures that YOU shot of THEIR production. But the window of opportunity to be a hot shot in this regard wont last long.. maybe a year?
I recall spending $40k in 2003 on a BVM 24 inch crt HD monitor and demanding clients sit 24 inches from the screen so they could experience the full wonder of HD, it paid dividends.

4k res on a 50 inch screen viewed at 48 inches will have a similar impact... for a lot less cash:

This is what Chinese wall outlets look like:

Chinasocket.jpg

They accept 3 types of plugs. US style, Euro style and whatever you want to call the bottom jack :)

The bottom three slots looks like an upside-down Australian/NZ power outlet.

I went by to see this today and they didn't have one in stock. From what I can tell, the best way to check this out is to use a USB memory key and play the file through the USB input. Just need to find out which is the best format it can handle (MP4, MKV or whatever) and generate a 3840×2160 file to try it out. I am out of town in a smaller city right now, when we get back home, there will surely be one on demo there.
