I like to use facebook groups because they are the most accessible source of information. Unfortunately, I think the "RED Komodo Users" facebook group is badly moderated. Maybe we should think about a new group, without censorship, with freedom of speech and the opportunity to express opinions. I would like to buy a Komodo, I think it will be a great camera, but it isn't a perfect camera and like every camera has weaknesses and we have the right to talk about them. Maybe I'm oversensitive, but I come from a country where we had communist censorship, such behavior is something unacceptable to me. The comments you see in the picture have been deleted and I was kicked out of the group. Do you think this is consistent with "the first rule of the group is to remain professional"

Freedom of speech does not mean you can speak however you want. Freedom of speech as a law has to do with governments censoring their people. If a group specifically aimed at discussing cameras and having guidelines for discussions and someone breaks those or cannot behave respectfully, that is not censorship. You need to educate yourself before accusing someone of censorship.

Can the moderators just lock this thread or delete it?

One can’t judge the potential of a camera like Komodo from web compressed pre-release casual footage.
These beta cameras have been in the hands of new owners for about two weeks. Hardly time enough to learn how to get the best from any raw cinema camera.
Beta testers often push their cameras to extremes to find the outer limits. They aren’t shooting marketing beauty footage.

I didn't see the comments on the Facebook group, but most of the comments I've seen about Komodo or Red in general on other forums tends to be biased bashing rather than true professional criticism and lack any specific reasons why the footage or camera is so terrible. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I fail to see what's to dislike so vehemently about Komodo or the early footage that's come from it. Don't forget that this is a pre-release $6K camera that essentially fits in the palm of your hand and these are tests that haven't undergone any serious grading. I've watched all of the Komodo footage out there including Tim's and I'm impressed with what I see. That's just my opinion, but seriously, what other camera in this price and/or size range can even come close? I've owned just about every Blackmagic camera at some point and they definitely can't produce an image quite as good. Neither can the C200, and certainly not anything anywhere near this price from Panasonic or Sony. There's probably only a handful of cameras in the wild that are in this class and they are astronomically more expensive and larger.

I am genuinely curious what people dislike so much and what they're shooting with currently that they find so much superior.

for clarification, I was removed from the group for this post:

do you see any kind of gibberish or anything else that authorizes the admin to remove me from the group?

I don't necessarily see anything unprofessional there. What were the previous comments you mention that were removed?

Yep, a lot of this early beta test footage looks bad. The criticism is irrelevant to the process and says nothing about the camera’s potential.

I was removed twice, now for the comment from the photo. Earlier I wrote something about that we have a lot of tests but none is enough to judge the quality of the camera and I asked for a skintones footage with colorchecker.

I will write it again, I think Komodo will be a very good camera and I would like to have it. But I don't like when I see bad material and I can't say I don't like it.

These are facts:

1. Some people really look at these cameras as more than a camera and get personally hurt and extremely defensive when discussing. Looks like you have found one of those people.

2. Phil does good tests.

3. Komodo looks like a red camera. It’s small and has global shutter.

These are all facts.

Maybe, but there is also a culture of irrational Red bashing that shows up in many forums from time to time.

In one such thread on DVXuser I made the simple observation that Reds consistently rank among the top three cinema camera systems on the market.

That too is a fact.

This is an uneducated opinion. The first footage from the Komodo does look decent but be realistic it's not so much better than anything else out there and is unlikely to be, this is just the usual RED fanboy bs that turns people off. All cameras in this price range offer really decent imagery and unlikely that anyone outside of the pixel peepers could tell the difference. Be happy it's works for you.

For the record the C200 is actually cheaper than the Komodo by 2K so you really don't know what you are talking about.

Just want to say this site is owned by Jarred I believe, and I have seen a ton of very tough criticism of RED here over the years. I've been totally impressed at the latitude members here have been given. It's moderated yes, but never in a manner that favors RED cameras or technology. The only criticism I have is the very occasional dog biscuit that is dangled in front of susceptible members, which may temper some comments.

If the moderators of that Facebook group don't like the things you say or how you say them-- whether they're accurate or not--, then I guess the most obvious option would be to start your own facebook group for Komodo discussion. You can come back and post here to let people know about it. If a lot of people are having the same problem with expressing themselves in the original group, then maybe you'll get a lot of members.

For most relatively ordinary web video this may be true. But there are a lot of other considerations depending on what you shoot. Personally I'll take Red's codec, workflow, and color science over Canon's raw lite any day. You don't see much penetration of Canons into long form narrative production. Arri, Red, and Sony pretty much own that turf. Good reality TV and doc cams though.

Personally I will take a Komodo over any of the other current 6k cameras for the global shutter alone.
