  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Carrion monitor delivery?

I understand that, Jay. You dropped out of the queue for the Birger mount, so I realize you lost faith in Erik and understand how you would feel the same about Luis.

But, in my opinion, the best remedy for the situation for you or others in this position is to simply step out of the queue and ask to have your money returned. If you are unable to get your money back AND are unable to receive delivery of the product, then I believe there is a case for action against the manufacturer.

The greatest leverage available to the buyer, however, is a threat to the manufacturer's ongoing concern. If there is no ongoing concern, there is no leverage. Simple.

Well I have quite a bit of faith in Erik, I simply knew long ago that this would take a while, and felt the best thing would be not to "need" it too much :)

Nevertheless, your point is well made.

Jay

How is progress coming on the monitor for Gardner Films (ordered in July?) I heard over Christmas from the guy that is building my guitar and he has actually made some progress after 3 years and I was hoping I'd hear the same from you...
Please let me know.
Thanks

I think there have been valid points made on both sides. I've been fortunate to spend some time with just about all of the small shops/one man bands who are making quality products for the Red community and beyond. I had a nice conversation with Luis at NAB and he seems like a stand-up guy to me. But I think he is facing the same problem that all of the others (with a few exceptions) are facing.

In order to keep costs down, you keep the man hours down. In other words, you do as much of the work yourself, or with the help of a couple of people. This translates into delays, which then translates into lack of communication because you are trying to prevent further delays by building the products. Add in some technical challenges, vendors sending bad parts, answering emails from customers who are upset, and you can see how the whole thing can spiral out of control quickly.

This is not an easy situation, whether you are the vendor (in this case Luis) or the customer who expected some delays but was willing to put up with that within reason because they are getting good deal and a solid product. After a while, it can become less of a good deal from the customers perspective because they have had to rent other accessories while they wait and all of that money they had hoped to save starts to neutralize. There are other monitor solutions out there. So in this case, it's not like you couldn't get another solution from B&H. You'll just pay more and maybe not get every feature you want.

In the case of Birger or View Factor for instance, they have a unique product. There is high demand for it. People have waited this out for a long time due to the inability to get the same product elsewhere. People have put money down and you can understand the frustration of some that really feel they were a bit mislead by the time tables. On the other hand you can look at those products as investments. You are investing in a product because you had a need, and they were there to fulfill that need. They took care of the design and the manufacturing of that product. But like any investment, you have a timetable set for when you would like to see it start paying dividends. It's not an infinite timetable. I believe there is still a pretty good window of opportunity for VF and Birger to deliver there products and their "investors" to be happy with the dividends. That window of opportunity probably starts to narrow after NAB.

Communication is huge. That's what our business is built on. We communicate ideas, we express ourselves. I think the best thing companies can do in 2009 is communicate with their customer base. People don't have a lot of money to throw around anymore and they are going to be more selective about which products they buy. If you don't communicate they will go elsewhere. If they can't find the product elsewhere, they may just decide not to buy it. No matter how big or how small your company is, the internet has left very little excuse for not communicating. It's so easy to post to a website, that even if you are working twenty hours a day (which we all do sometimes) you can still manage to find a couple of minutes to communicate with those who have invested their money in your company. It doesn't have to be daily. It just has to be consistent. That puts people at ease.

In conclusion, I think Luis will best be served by coming on here and giving an update. Even if it's bad news. I don't think he is trying to screw anyone over, or take anyone's money. He's probably trying to earn a living with his primary job. No one can fault him for that. I'm sure he will do the right thing.

Same here. He said that he will send it out the next day 7 weeks ago. Assuming that it was comming , I bought batteries, charger, and noga arm for it. Now if those things aren't compatible with the monitor, I can't return it. I am loosing money. My patient is running thin.

i don't believe it......!

i don't believe it......!

Yes they do exist.....!
From out of no where, the friendly Fed-Ex man knocks on the door and gives me a box with a sticker on it, with a black Raven on the sticker.
I open the box and to my shock & amazement there sits a shiny new Carrion C monitor with v lock plate.......wow.....about bloody time....!!!
No warning it was coming, no email from LS design, just plonk...!, on the door step.
Weird way to do business man, but hey its here....! Thanks....
Ordered in Jun 08....delivered in JAN 09....?!
So they do exist and here is a few pics to prove it....!

Where are things at with this monitor?

I am assuming, since this thread has been quiet for a while, the back log has been taken care of... true ?

If so, what is the lead time on delivery if one was ordered today?

thanks,

Greg

Well I ordered mine in july, still don't have it. I've come to terms with it. It'll get here when it gets here, but don't count on getting one soon.

Nick

oops, signed in to wrong account. Oh well, same company ;-)

Visited Luis recently... I saw a stack of monitor parts he was working on and teased him about his slowness. Here's a photo:

What you don't see is the stack of gold bars he has on the floor in his lounge. Harharhar ;)

yeah..he's even slow and not responding to my replacement cable..what kind of support is that..disappointing, you get monitor..use it..have problem..can he support it ?

Are people using this as an onboard? Or as a stand alone? I don't quite get it as an onboard (weight, connections our of the top, no meta data, etc). Recently got the RED Pro 7" and I think it's one of the best investments. All the electronics are in the camera. A real weight save and fantastic pic.

Last, are these epic waits worth it? Considering lost time, subrentals, etc.

Tim,

I have used one and the monitor is really nice. It's not super heavy, although battery choice could make a difference. It's very sharp, good in bright light, and displays the information that others can't. It's pretty good for pulling focus on. But the Red has the benefit of being ultralight, reasonably sharp, and powered by the camera battery. I think the Carrion is a pretty good option, but depends how quick you need it.

I've used it in a test environment only one time before and it is a nice monitor. I almost bought one specifically because of the anamorphic aspect ratio correction. Of, course RED solved that within their own monitor. Otherwise, if you can wait, and wait, than I'm sure it would be a nice tool to have.

You can get a cable from Switronix to plug the Carrion into the D-tap on the Red battery pack. It works great when the camera is mounted and you can run into the HDMI port on the Red and have all your menus.
