  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Carrion monitor delivery?

Well, that´s certainly an issue, and one I can´t comment on - but that´s because (depending on how handy/confident you are inside an electronics case) the great thing about Luis monitors is that they are made from off-the-shelf components, and are thus pretty user serviceable compared to name-brand units.

On our very first shoot with ours, some months ago, we had an accident that resulted in the screen being broken by a point impact. I simply opened up the box, searched the internet for the model number of the screen, bought a replacement and had it fitted in within about 2 hours of receiving it.

We later had ours stolen when our office was broken into (hence the need for another one!), but that´s a different story...

We don´t seem to be very lucky with ours! We will definitely be ordering another though, as they are pound for pound (or dollar, if you prefer!) the best monitors out there, imho.

Do you still have the screen info? I have a Carrion monitor and really think it is great but also have a spot on the screen that may have been damaged from pressure or impact. It is still useable but annoying. For a while I thought it was something in the lens path untill I finally figured out it was the screen. I've emailed Luis but like everyone else have never heard back from him. If I can just replace the screen that would be great.
Thanks...

Not off the top of my head I´m afraid. It´s an NEC model, but the precise model number is a very long string of random-sounding digits, so not too memorable!

If you take the front off the case, you´ll find it on the back of the screen easily enough.

One point to mention regarding this:
It may just have been my particular unit, but three of the bolts holding the screen on had standard nuts on them, whilst one was riveted for no particular reason (that I could see, at least). I just cut it off with a dremel leaving enough of the bolt to locate the new screen (but not secure it obviously), which worked fine. Just so you know...

Luis.....
Now i'm really pissed.....!
1Dog ordered his on AUG 12th.......I ordered mine on the 27th July and i have heard nothing....???!!!!
Luis you need to contact me now or i'm onto PAYPAL about you...!

For everyone else, I am looking at these two as alternatives:

I got the Nebtek HDS 70. I love this monitor. Use it on just about every job regardless of camera. Very bright and still retains its contrast. 600 NITs makes it a good deal brighter than Marshal or Panny. Without a doubt one of the best purchases I made in ages. And I can sleep knowing when it goes down they'll back it up. In fact they once offered to send me a back up while one of my other monitors went down. Who does that?

Much of this thread is devoted to customer frustration. You won't get that with Nebtek. They're like Zacuto. Easy to get hold of a human on the phone who knows what they're talking about and they give honest turn around times. When it comes to gear as critical as a monitor, I can't screw around with a Gepetto that doesn't meet the bare minimum in customer service. I used to have a 35mm adaptor and that world is rife with slack QC and Customer service (a bad combo) from all of the low cost adaptor makers. Yet there's always the same band of apologists saying be patient and let the craftsmen work. I say, once you take good money from people you are now business - so run it like one.

I think the Nebtek is an amazing value for the money. It is not the highest resolution screen and it doesn't have features like pixel-for-pixel or a waveform, but for a bright, clean picture that is daylight viewable it is hard to beat. Especially at the price.

I believe we're currently offering a special discount or rebate deal of some sort. I don't think it's on the website but if you contact a Sales Rep. they can get you the information.

Not trying to push a product. As you can see from the link above we also carry Marshall and we've sold tons of the Panasonic 7.9" and 8.4" monitors. Great stuff all. I'm just saying that for the price I've personally been quite impressed with the Nebtek.

I have sent Luis two emails and two private messages. I have not heard anything either. When he said that he was getting caught up with the order in a few weeks back in September 4th on DVXUSER forum, I though that I was going to get mine anytime soon. That went for two months now. Luis, you have asked us to be patient and I have been. But it's not fair to any of us that the monitor is sent out not in the order in which it was made. I don't want to be in a situation where I have to come here and bitch to get my monitor. Luis please also let me know too when mine is comming. Jay

Dominic Jones,
Sorry to hear about your monitor getting damaged and then stolen. Thanks for the kind words.
FYI, I've only had one unit come back with issues and I've serviced that unit at not cost to the user. So its not like I would just not repair the unit. The thing to understand is that most Mnf. factor customer service and repairs into their costs. Hence their higher price. I am trying to provide the same without including those cost into my price.
As for replacing the units yourself. (Once you do this, I am not responsible for anything else that goes wrong with the unit) And second, the screen that I use, although off the shelve, it also gets a custom filter added in order to increase contrast, brightness and outdoor anti-reflection.

Ken,
If you need a screen replacement, this can be done. Of course it would cost, but it's doable.

Ah, ok - maybe made the wrong choice there then! I figured by the time I'd sent it back to LA, got it fixed, sent back, paid for postage etc, it was probably better to fix it myself.

That said, at least the pikey shites that nicked it have got a sub-standard monitor - always that silver lining, isn't there?!

Could you let me know an estimated turn-around on a new order mate? Personal PM is fine if you don't want to risk tons of people holding you to online info...

Cheers, and thanks for the words of consolation!
Dom.

I was seriously thinking about getting this monitor, but now that I've read about all of these problems then I think I'll pass. Can't someone just send me the various partnumbers and I'll assemble one myself :)

Well, the control circuit is custom-programmed for the LCD (costs more than the panel). And you have the custom coating for the panel. And the case is custom made and took 100s of hours to design & build. Also had to go through $$$$ worth of prototypes (you never get things right first). And you can only order some of the parts in very large quantities (no one-offs). And you need to figure out how to use CAD software, where to get everything, etc. And wait AGES for suppliers (think Luis is bad? ;).

If you have a free machine shop and value your time at about $1 per hour then you might have a great idea here. Maybe you want to build your own Scarlet while you're at it.

I made a monitor setup myself and never want to do it again. I'm buying Luis's.

Well - I know my way around Solidworks and own my own CNC mill. My dad's an electronics engineer (used to work for IBM) so it shouldn't be too much of a task, though I agree these things take time - and money... Which is why I put the smiley in the end of that closing statement ;)

If Luis manages to get his lead-times and support together, then I will definitely consider buying his monitor if I'm still in the market by then.

EDIT: I don't really get why you're trying to put me down by those degrading statements, Bruce?

EDIT: I don't really get why you're trying to put me down by those degrading statements, Bruce?

I'm not trying to put you down. I'm saying that I personally went down this route and I regret that decision. Wasn't worth the time and money.

And which part is degrading? Just saying people trying to make their own:
- should have free / cheap machine shop
- should have time to wait for components to arrive
- should have money to burn on bulk component orders (or very high priced single items) / high one-off costs
- will put in hundreds of hours to make a $2000 product

And once you calculate it out you're probably making under $1 per hour. Making $1 per hour is not necessarily degrading either. It depends on where you live. I made $2.50 per hour teaching Final Cut Pro editing to postgrad students in South Africa back when I was studying there. Compared to the cost of living it was good.

But for me in 2008 it was just a stupid move - eventually I realized that turning down $60-$90 per hour animation work in LA so I could fulfill monitor orders that I was making next to no money on - and which would actually lose me money if the components broke down - was one of the dumbest things I'd done in my life.

Hang on Dominic, shites yes, but you don't know they were pikeys! :shifty:

RED should hire luis and buy the rights to his monitor and look at making it on mass :)

If you price out the components on RED's LCDs you'll see they are making a vastly higher markup than Luis.

If they made his monitor, it would cost a LOT more.

PMed ya, Bruce :)

And sent you a nice PM back. Much respect to you. I am not suggesting you aren't perfectly capable of making a monitor - only that it might not be a profitable thing to do time and money-wise. Likewise, you could make a Scarlet-style camera with a machine vision sensor and a SFF PC parts etc, but why do it when RED will sell one the body for $2500?
