  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon 7D and Nikon RAW 35mm video camera?

Sucks that it's not a full-frame sensor. But 24p almost seems worth it, especially for the price!

It does look pretty cool on first blush, but I'll probably just hold on to my $1700 for a bit and hope to drop it on a module or two.

It's actually good it's not full frame, it's about the same sensor size as Red One.

And it supports 24/25/30 and 50/60P. Pretty versatile tool for under 2K. Color me impressed, I didn't expect Canon to do it.

The 1.6x cropped sensor is perfect for this sort of work. It means that 35mm PL-mounted lenses will cover the whole sensor and the camera's FOV will match the RED ONE and similar cameras.

Pretty cool for $1,700. It'll be nice to "hold me over" until RED's next wave ships.

Other things to consider in regards to it not being full frame... The sensor should have less skew or rolling shutter jello and it will be skipping fewer pixels to create a 1080p image.

That considered, and disregarding the fact I don't own any Canon lenses, I just can't bring myself to buy another Sony, Panasonic, Canon or Nikon camera. Just as Jim rightly points out tonight, most of what is new on the 7D could easily be done via firmware updates to the current 5D2. And yet, Canon chooses to release a new camera and give all their current 5D2 customers the finger. I'm tired of that business model and refuse to support it any longer.

It sucks trying to hold out for the new RED DSMC models, but I can get along just fine with what I have now. And the RED One consistently amazes me with every firmware build and every time I try something new with it. Even not trying to shoot specifically for stills, I can grab usable stills from RED footage most of the time. Here's one I shot saturday night, pulled from a clip shot at 3K RC36 MAX 50fps, lens was 50mm RPP. It's tack sharp. No grading or retouching, just bumped the contrast and exported the frame, I had the camera on my shoulder and not even lined up with our lighting or aimed at the green screen.

Not sure if it's skipping pixels to create 1080. Just saw this clip which looks promising.

For a camera priced under 2K it's a steal for the features being offered. What's ironic is what I wanted from Scarlet wasn't for 3k or 4k, I and I think many people would have been happy with fewer features. 1080P, 24/25/30/60P and interchangeable lenses. Two years ago that seemed crazy, not anymore...

EDIT: Another clip

hmmm, indeed, those videos are gorgeous, but in those clips I notice ZERO shutter skew, where as this clip ( http://vimeo.com/6370469?hd=1 ) not produced by Canon, shows obvious skew. Any chance of tampering?

No you are not. I also notice how the official clips don't seem to pan. Hmmm. Y'know, I always thought Nikon was the biggest chance to doing what Red is doing because they didn't have to unlearn any of the video history like Canon, Sony, Panasonic. Well so far, no ceeegar. I hope Red release the Scarlet soon, and with a cast body that's cheaper to make, so they can really slap the other manufacturers around some more.

Right now I think that Canon definitely took a slight lead with 7D because of high ISO and even you don't need Master Primes any more...!!!

But a lead on what? Because there is very little overcranking with Canon (just two, 30 and 60) no color correction, and "low" resolution. Also, no audio unless you call that audio.

For family videos, BTS and smaller projects, sure... but when quality is key forget about it. However, I can't see something that is virtually impossible to color correct as "broadcast quality" Sanjin.

On Red's side, don't forget about the 1.5 stops lower noise in the second generation of Mysterium, or ISO 800. It will narrows the only gap Canon has going for them, even if just "a little".

Wouldn't you agree?

What is the highest clean ISO that the D7 will give you? I know it is super high, but how high?

Probably Brook is a guy from the field...

... I'll be picking one or two 7Ds up the day they ship. Not because I want to... but because I have to. It'll be the only 1080/24p large-sensor softball-sized camera that's actually on the market... and that's what is called for right now. And what's a few grand for an awesome shot anyways?

I really can't wait until the Epic ships... I'm floored with excitement. Everybody's ready for a camera like this. The bummer is that for all of the bad things to say about Canon's business model [and for all the 5/7D's shortcomings]... they've made the "good enough" camera first... and it's already on set.

So even though the Epic will nuke its face off... the Canon is already having an early field day with the market.

Canon is going to sell zillions of these cameras.

Scarlet is going to have to be very good, very cheap and out soon to be even in the same ballpark as the 7D.

I love it.

"Family videos".

:mad2:

Once again, another DSLR with movie mode, and the same discussions on here. I guess for the camera guys, this is pretty exciting (and perhaps to me for prosumer family use - although for this, 1080p is a total waste of time), but for post guys, notsomuch.

As soon as Canon or Nikon bring out a camera that records RAW, sensibly compressed, or a proper edit codec (ProRes would be killer, and entirely possible) these cameras will eat a huge chunk of RED's Scarlet market. Even with h.264 (ugh) I'm sure for many they will be good enough - but not for Pros.

Come to think of it - why limit Scarlet to REDcode? Stick a chip for on-camera compression to ProRes and we'll call it a day. Game over everyone else...

No, 7d is just another a still camera with consumer video features.

Scarlet will still be a much more robust, flexible and capable high quality motion picture camera. Worth the higher cost.

"Stick a chip for on-camera compression to ProRes and we'll call it a day."

Could not agree more. Raw is ideal hands down. However, for many jobs, particularly those that require quick turn-a-round - If I could simply record to 1080p or even 720 with the new ProRes 4:4:4 codec and take it directly in to FCP from a Scarlet, that would be, how would Chris Farley put it? - "Awesome!".

I was really excited for this camera until I saw the crap dynamic range and very very soft looking images at 1080p. I'm completely apathetic now.
