  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon 7D and Nikon RAW 35mm video camera?

Not full frame 35mm above and after all?

Yes, I am waiting for FF35 Monstro. Will shoot on 2/3" Scarlet and various other cameras until it comes. What I really, really need right now is some serious overcranking for my current project, and the 120-150fps is perfect. :driving:

Gotta love the program. Keep inching the bar up with each model and getting the customer to buy a new camera every time. Love the business model. If you bought every Canon still along the way (1D, D60, 10D, 20D, 20Da, 5D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 1Ds, 1DMKII, 1DsMKII, etc.) I think you would have spent well over $60K (in the last 8 years). That does NOT count any Digital Rebels. I bought every 1D and 1Ds version released and groaned every time the next one came out with just enough new features to suck me in.

Jim

Camera nerds need a new toy every year or two, you understand this better than canon or anyone, now you have more cameras coming out, even a trade-in to spend another $25k... $40k + in just two years from your customers. Nice!

If someone could make a camera that is never obsolete I'd buy it :)

How many cameras will you have in your line soon? 9 or 10?

Chip

No dissrespect, just a concern of mine. Being honest

Someone at dpreview postet some transcribed points from a video of a presentation Tom Smith from Canon inc. did for Digital Cinema Society about the 5DII july 23.

The clip with the Canon Video product manager is very interesting.

Tim Smith, Product Manager for Canon Digital Imaging, Part 1:

1) The 5D Mark II was designed for photojournalists, at the request of Associated Press & Reuters. The 1080p30 was meant for photographers taking quick videos for the web. No manual options were included initially because the 5D2 was meant for non-videographers. IOW, the strong interest from filmmakers was somewhat unanticipated. That's why there was no 1080p24.

2) 5D2 is 8-bit video, and they may be targetting 10-bit for video on dSLRs in the future.

3) UDMA Compact Flash cards recommended. Non-UDMA cards cause problems including video banding issues.

4) 1920x1080 is NOT derived through pixel-skipping. The pixels are binned in groups of 6, and then downsampled to 1080p.

5) 1080p24 likely to come in the future. However, this will likely not happen on the 5D2. If it comes it'll probably be in a new machine. They'd be "insane" not to implement 1080p24, given the demand. (This talk was before the 7D was announced.)

6) Vincent Laforet wasn't supposed to see the camera. He just happened to be at Canon having lunch. He saw the camera and asked to see if he could try his first video on it.

7) The camera was not designed for full 30 fps 1080p RAW output. There would be too much heat output from the CPU. In order to do 30 fps 1080p RAW output, they'd have to re-engineer the camera.

The part2 is also interesting.

This also confirm that had it not been for Vincent Laforet's Reverie, the use and capabilities of the 5DII would have taken a much longer time to be noticed and explored by film makers. :bigear:
Basically, Canon had no idea, vision or understanding of what they had made. :piggy: :dupe:

The question remains, will they be able or have the vision to utilise the possibilities? :aureola:

(PS. Canon have just run a survey on their pages asking people what features they want for 5DII,7D and 500D)

Anyway, I expect RED to be the company to get everything right, they have both the vision and the capabilities. That's why I pass on these Canon offerings and wait for a Scarlet FF35.

Only canon can make video like that on accident, or without knowing. Now they know.

So, wait: Mr. Laforet just happened to stumble across this about-to-be-released camera, somehow talked his way into borrowing it in time for the shoot he just happened to already have lined up, for which he'd already booked a chopper and a Kenyon gyro, and which just accidentally happened to demand nothing but shallow-focus night shots with bright speculars which (completely by accident, naturally) totally concealed the aliasing, jello, crushed blacks and other shortcomings of the 5DII?

Yeah, I'm sure that's just how it went down ...

why the name?
this should be known as reduser's canon forum
