  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Note my edit I was making even before your comment - again I'm not knocking you and I was just basing that number on orders - I have no idea how many have followed through - I'm just saying Jason cuts you slack because you have enough staff to answer his emails. I'm not thrilled with Erik's performance here - but he has made clear for a long time - for better or worse - that he just can't handle constant communications. And the billionaire point is just that somewhere there are the financial resources to handle the cash flow fluctuations whereas for many microbusiness they have no access to financing no matter where they turn and so just have to deal with it. Almost any good business education program will tell you that cash flow is almost THE single most important factor because it seriously affects every aspect of the business regardless of the intentions or planning of the principles (edit or I should have said principals although the principles are important too:biggrin:.)

I'll shut up now - not trying to p-ss any body off and may have unintentionally.

I'm not cutting them slack and not asking for "constant" communication.

Jarred is a busy guy... so is everyone else at Red. But they always manage to pop into RedUser even for a few sentences... which helped... at a time that as Jarred points out, they were a handful of employees.

As far as Erik, how long does a sentence or two take? I noticed that when someone popped up recently on the thread and took a swipe at him and his reputation, Erik wrote quite a few paragraphs just to address it. And this was to a non-customer.

So... can customers deserve two sentences? How long does that take? I'm a working person myself... so I'm not a stranger to time-management.

I don't want to make this a bashing Erik rant by the way. I'm just expressing a point that I think deserves to be said and addressed. Erik needs to step up to the plate with his communication. Not constant. But timely and accurate. I pointed to Red because they did it. Sorry to drag them into this one.

Erik, no hard feelings and I don't mean disrespect. I do sympathize with your situation. Just an update, okay?

I'll just shut up now. I usually try and take that tact to avoid exactly what just happened.

:)

It would indeed be nice to have some feed back even a word or two. Once again, after Erik's message last Friday I was certain that will get the mount this week. But, have lost the rationale several months ago, so just keep waiting, waiting, waiting ... like the Duracell puppy. Who knows, if this keeps going on perhaps Epic will be available before the mount is available with the knob.

My latest concern --you know one tends to seek for explanations after delay after another-- is that the recent delay has to do with the issue Takano-san raised. That is, it is a very fundamental fact that all power fed to the lens will transfer to heat and there is no way around that. IF the lenses do not stand constant focusing, the only solution is to restrict the amount of power feeded to the lens below the level that burnt the motor.
But, summing up, like Jason I would like to hear a frank assesment what is the real situation. I would be happy with a mount enabling one to adjust the aperture. The knob would obviously be a great bonus, but not a necessity.

As to customerservice, this forum is the best idea I've seen. And it is hard to repeat...

Jarred knew how to run forums well (dvxuser anyone...) and many more could benefit from each answer given.

I don't think this is directly achievable for anyone else in the RED sphere now, as everyone just goes here to look for tidbits and advice.

(In other words: I don't think Erik could just set up a forum and have it solved for him. The customer and interest base is too small, and they're already connected to RED).

And the whole forum thing has changed, from a bunch of "believers" to a bunch of "users" which Erik doesn't really benefit from, as he still needs slack from "believers".

RED was just so right in timing and benefiting from technology trends and really in all conceivable ways, that one could suspect that a business minded guy like the one that established Oakley was behind it... :)

Just wanted to say thanks to the Birger team for an awesome mount! Yes it's real, for those still waiting, and it really opens up a whole new avenue of shooting options:

That's the first test I did here in my hotel room, using my Canon EF-S 17-55mm IS USM lens wide open at f2.8. You can click on the image above to download a full resolution version (still JPG though to conserve bandwidth). I used build 3.4.1, which is the PERFECT complement to the Birger mount with its 1:1 focus check, to achieve sharp focus on the "nipple" :) of the number 5 key. Ignore any noise in the sample, it was lit only by the room's tungsten downlight and main light. I colour corrected it a touch and gave it a slight curve to make it look nice, but essentially it's just to show how easy it is to achieve a cinema look now without spending money on cine lenses!

To both Birger Engineering and Red, thanks for working together to achieve this milestone in digital cinema!

Cheers,

Paul

There have also been problems with the data pins on at least 2 of the mounts.

But, who knows. Without any kind of communication that I can find since 10/24, all we can do is build frustration and speculate.

Good point, Erik seems to be after highest quality which is, of course, a very positive thing. We'll see, an update from Erik would be nice.

Paul's image looks great!

It is disappointing. I am not angry what so ever. Whats the point?

It would be nice at this point if Erik just put all the big business stuff aside and just took care of the little people.

Hell everyone could be using there mounts right now and when Erik has some significant upgrades we could always courier them back to get them upgraded.

I understand that the early reservation holders get free knobs? What is the reward for the patience the rest of us have had. Maybe Erik could hit up Hugh Hefner and get our knobs polished. Everyone likes a shiny knob.

Good thing I didn't get my equipment loan from Salvatore Contorno of the "cosa nostra". I don't think I would have any knee caps left and probably missing a few fingers.

I think insanity has set in................ :turned:

Yes, a dumb mount for now!

That way I can show viseralpsyche what shooting nipples in a hotel room is really about. lol. :) j/k.

I am thankful that Erik has taken great pains to ensure that the mount is of the highest quality. I hope this motor issue isn't a real one. Erik said he's addressed it. And no word from mount users yet... although we don't know how much they're using it. Was this a week long of QC problems? If so, that's fine. And I've been a little concerned about the "tight" fitting of the mount. Someone said they thought there would be metal shavings it was so tight. I wonder if that goes away with use? Like a good pair of jeans? But then again, on some girls, a pair of jeans is good because it's tight! :)

I wish I had my own mount but until then.

I wish I had my own mount but until then.

I was able to borrow the Birger mount again for a couple days - here are some stills from the Canon 24-70 2.8 They are at 3k and 4k. All but the sand is wide open I believe. One might be at 5.6 but I don't think so. I would not be able to tell between this lens and the RED 18-50 in terms of pure image quality - there could be flare, CA and other differences but these look really good. Remember, I did no collimation whatsoever, this is how the mount shipped. The attachment thing resizes them pretty small but here you go.

I'm pretty sure the "motor issue" Takano-san mentioned isn't the cause of this delay. That would be an all-or-nothing thing, and mounts are still trickling out of Birger HQ. And if the issue is real, it probably wouldn't show up until people get knobs to focus with.

And I've been a little concerned about the "tight" fitting of the mount.

That's not the case on mine. It's maybe a little more snug than a Canon SLR body, but doesn't feel as tight as the Nikon mount (which surprised me the first time I put a lens on it). Or did you mean the way the mount itself fits on the camera?

A dumb mount version would be incredible right now. I would kill for 1!

Either that or by Tuesday morning I am ordering the Red Nikon dumb mount and using the new Matte Box and FF from Arri.

Hehehe :)

Maybe RED has bought both Andy and Erik?
