  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I got a FedEx "standard overnight" tracking number on Friday, but it still hasn't arrived. When I track the number online it only says "Oct 24, 2008 5:37 PM - Package data transmitted to FedEx"... nothing about pickup or transit.

Hey, Aka,
Is really that your order number as per 1dog list?

I'm sure it's in here somewhere but I can't face 4000 posts so what is the current situation?

Are those waiting for imminent - and eminent - delivery on an early list of orders or are we up to recent orders.

I've been waiting for things to settle and get some feedback on the product - does it work as it should etc - before placing an order.

If I did that now when might I get my mount? Any guesses?

John

In honor of Black Friday, the largest shopping day of the year in the US, the Birger Engineering Cinema Lens Mounts for the RED ONE Camera are now available for reservation. Download forms at:

http://www.birger.com/pdf/cinema_order_form.pdf

Reservations are placed with a 20% deposit on a credit card, and are fully refundable prior to the scheduled ship date. The rest of the details are in the form.

I have accepted Ken Corben’s invitation to attend LART on 1 December. I have chosen this event for the public unveiling of the lens mount system from Birger. Over the coming weeks we will announce who our early users are, provide additional feedback as to which lenses are going to offer the best results with each of the mounts, and a great deal more information about the system.

I will do as Jim has, and offer a reward to the believers. Place a reservation and a refundable deposit prior to the public unveiling, and you will receive a free Bluetooth Remote Control with each system purchased.

Less then one month away from Black Friday, I guess.
1-year anniversary. :sorcerer:

until mine ships.......

until mine ships.......

I had to shoot on Tue. of this week which is much worse then on a weekend if you have to rent lenses by mail. So after spending enough to buy a brand new lens while wading through promises I finally got to try out the Birger mount. My savior was Donatello who is a great guy that I'd never met before and let me use his previously uninstalled Birger mount for a day. Some of the installation was slightly tricky but I was also being very careful. I never did figure out how to adjust the collimation but on my 16-35 II I got an almost perfect focus all throughout the zoom range. At 35 it was slightly out but only enough that I had to focus back and forth 3 or 4 times to get it any closer. I heard this lens stayed consistent throughout the zoom but it might be that I was at the limit of the lens capability. Anyway the focus on everything was great and they all but one worked fine.

16-35 L II - Worked great
24-70 - Does not hold focus through zoom. But functioned properly - again this is at stock-as shipped- collimation setting.
50 1.4 - Works fine - possibly some image shift on micro focus adjustments but I could be wrong.
85 1.8 - Electronics do not work properly. Whenever i plug it in the camera starts recording in TL mode and I can't really stop it until I take the lens off. It exerts control over the RED in an erratic way - very odd.

BTW the lens mount is very tight on all of my lenses. I had to use a considerable amount of force to get them on or off. They did fit and did click in place but to varying degrees the turning was very frictiony. Not a bad thing per se but I was not expecting it and was wondering what others experienced.

Overall worked great and once the focus knob ships it will actually be usable in the production environment. Now I just hope I get mine in them mail before I have to f'ing rent again. Thanks again to Donatello for all his help. He has every toy / aftermarket addon too so if anyone has questions he might be the guy to ask.

Erik, you said that the last shipments was supposed to be this last Monday (actually last Thu/Fri). Several people who were were part of the first batch haven't gotten their mounts yet, including me.

Please tell us the status.

Thank you.

85 f1.8 canon right?

for a sec there i thout you were talking about the mkII L series the f1.2

im curious to know how sigma functions with the knob..

the 85 is a special lens--Erik's noted it and mentioned he's trying to figure that one out. Seems to be different than most of Canon's lenses.

I've found that the tight fit breaks in over time--shouldn't have too much trouble as time goes on.

Thanks for posting lens results--I'm hoping to do more careful lens testing in the next few weeks too. Looking forward to Erik's software coming on board.

I found it was very tight as well especially on my 50 f1.2 It was so grindingly tight that it made me wince and I swear I could see tiny metal flakes inside the red from it, but that might have been my imagination. I'll check it later. I'm hoping it settles in. In general the birger seems very well made.

so he can use the knob and blue tooth remote lens control.
Sure, or you could use the remote lens control software Canon provides: LINK

Not that I'm discouraging Eric from pursuing new markets. A standalone knob that plugs into the usb port of a Canon SLR might find some buyers.

Oh, interesting. I never seen it in action before. thanks. but it didn't seem as responsive in focusing that a knob would be. anyway... just saying.
