  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is your Birger Confirmation number? PM me..........

If you didn't PM me with your reservation number I just took you off the list. Didn't want to guess. Lauri and Harmonica have moved up from what Eric had told them at first just to account for cancellations.

Hey Jarred

With shipping well under way, perhaps a new lens catagory is in order.
Other wise, this thread will easily reach 5000+. I can't see interest in the Birger Mount going away because it is shipping.
How's ...All things Birger:nerd: OK, maybe not.
Maybe just replace the Birger "I didn't get a confirmation for my order yet" sticky. I have a feeling we will be talking about the mount for a while longer.

Thanks

Great product, great drama, and great audience!

Getting back to the usm motors the engineering point Takano-san raised is that the motors within EF-lenses do not last continuous current.

Typically in designing magnetic devices, such as actuators, motors, etc, one has to make a compromise between size and torque/force. That is, higher currents imply wires having bigger cross sections. If the wire is thin, it heats up faster and this increases resistance which results in higher heat losses which eventually burn the wire. But if the force/torque is needed only for a short period of time then one is able to use much thinner wire and higher number of turns to get a bigger magnetic field which is directly proportional to the force/torque.

It may well be and it sounds plausible that in designing EF-lenses they have made such a compromise in order to get a small motor with high torque -high torque means faster auto focus. When it comes to the Birger mount this just means the motor should not be over loaded. There are several ways to avoid overloading. One key issue is that no current is fed into the motor, i.e., the system is inactive when the knob is not moved keeping the coils/motors as cool as possible.

If Erik has a few lenses he can also test pretty easily how much power the motors can take before they break up. There after it is possible to build a system protecting the user from overloading the lens. Erik may already have all this, so don't want to speculate on that.

All I'm saying is, Takano-san does have a "reasonable doubt" and the principle behind it is evident. But neither should this be a major obstacle.

Anyone have success using this lens?

It seems to work intermittently on my Birger mount.
Sometimes it fully works with complete iris operation and focus calibration yet other times it sits inoperable in a vegetative state except for manual focus control.

I would like to know what other people's experiences are before I send it back for a new one. Thanks.

so everyone who has been waiting for the birger mount now starts defending the product just because they paid ? I understand Erik has been 'delivering for 8 years' so you all spent 4000 posts on his holiday ?
I think the usm will not be able to work on cine, it has not been designed to do so and it has never been used in this way; let's all spent some more money and time ?
all I know is it is not possible to pull focus in a decent way on a photo lens, also a photo lens is made to take a picture and not to make a zoom in 24 fps a second. Focus will be different on 85 or 24 mm on the same zoomlens; that's why Canon has usm.
I've been reading the birger story and I do not believe it will work, the only thing that will work is the fact that you can mount canon and use the t stop, but the stop will not be the same for wide angle or long lenses, no matter what canon is trying to make you believe. It is very easy to check this on a grey scale.
Birger is cheap, if you pay it now and have it next week, but it will never make a photo lens a film lens ( as we need on the red )
(I'm a big canon fan and do own 1ds mark II and 5D, 70-200 2.8 etc and I will use the lenses on my red, for landscape)

I'm a free lance cameraman and i DO NOT WORK FOR CANON OR RED OR ETC

Mark

a t stop is with a locked exposure like 1/60 very important but in still photography a t stop is part of the 'look' of a frame. We use ND to create a depth of field, a photographer changes speed / exposure /
What I'm saying is that still lenses are not designed to be very acurate in the stop settings, while a set of Zeiss primes is.

I still can't believe this thread has reached almost 4000 posts...

Mike try to get/rent/borrow Canon EF 50mm f / 1.2L USM and EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM, even if they don't work with Birger (do not know) use "dumb" wide open to get some light in your RED.

Then you will see that your RED word is changed, you can see in a dark like a Master Prime.

all I know is it is not possible to pull focus in a decent way on a photo lens

If that's what you believe that's what will be true for you.

Many people are shooting RED with SLR lenses very successfully now. I've shot a feature and a few shorts mostly pulling my own focus by eye and it's worked very well. The RED focus assist modes have made that possible. Breathing is minimal on my lenses and the mechanics have been better on some lenses than others.

As to exposure drifting, RED has histograms and false color so if you ever really came across a lens that drifted over it's zoom range then you'd see it right away. I have shot with zooms much. Almost all primes so far. The zooms I have used weren't very smooth so using them during a shot would be tough without a motor on it.

I don't think anyone with heavy investment in the PL world will bother trying to make RED work with SLR lenses so they continue to assume they won't... or that they won't reliably. Why would they? They are already invested in something very expensive and will defend it and disparage the alternatives.

The real truth is SLR lenses have been working on RED very well for months - and I've seen more than a few jaws drop of guys who wouldn't have believed it possible.

I was thinking of buying a Canon 85mm 1.8 soon so it would be nice if anyone who has experience with this could chime in. Thanks!

Problems here too with that lens. I wont go into detail, but Erik is looking into it and has been for a few weeks. Perhaps Erik is holding off on the next batch until he can find a solution.

Thanks Darkline. I'm glad he's aware of the problem. It's a nice lens.

Is the collimation software available for download?

Also, the antenna definitely will not fit on if you have an ET EVF mount. The front tightenting knob and antenna share the same space. A right angle antenna (or adapter) may work. If not that, I did notice the antenna connection on the circuit board is easy to get to so... a little surgery could be applied.

I may try rotating the mount 90 degree also.

Install was easy. I used penetrating oil on my screws before starting. I also added anti seize lube to the new bolts. And I'll do that on my other bolts. Now that I've switched mounts a couple times I see that it's not much trouble if you're handy.

Canon 85mm 1.8, has been on my camera all morning, and I have not seen any issues yet...

I am working with Darkline to resolve his issue, and left a voicemail for britim. Darkline's issue is probably the mount, not the lens. Don't have enough information from britim yet.

The 28mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8 are the newest additions to our test set. People are going to be very happy with these lenses. Internal focusing, not much breathing, compact, quiet, and less than $400.

although the 1.2 is the bomb, it would be great if someone would set up a side by side test between the 1.8 and 1.2. if it's "negligible", that will be quite a savings.

can anyone report on the IS with Red?

Is the collimation software available for download?

I have "release" versions of both the mac and the pc versions in house. Collimation did not make the release version. It will be in the next version. I need to do some validation on the install, and that the last few bugs were in fact killed. I expect to release on wednesday. We also need to write up the procedure for connecting to the bluetooth on both platforms. It is easy, but at least for me, not obvious, because we have some security features enabled.

Can't rotate the mount 90 degrees, because the pocket for the i-cable won't line up. The solution to this is a short cable with a 90 degree RP-SMA female connector on one end, and a straight RP-SMA male on te other end for an antenna. We use the camera body as the counterpose for the antenna, so the bracket for the antenna needs to hold the connector, not the antenna itself.

Just for a software update, you can probably get away with no antenna at a distance of a couple of feet.

Is there any possibility of Four Thirds lenses working with the Biger or other mount. I was thinking of the Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm lens f2.8-3.5 short zoom.

The reason is 2k needs supporting at the wide end for underwater work and thought that this lens or similar lenses may be suitable for 2k.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

thanks,

Dave
