  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Thanks for your opinion Erik.
Like with all expensive toys, it's wise to be careful and not to play with all features extensively. Hey, even manual lens can be abused and damaged.
Personally, I will use manual FF whenever possible. Electronic FF is hard to beat when camera flies on steadicam and that's where I see practical application for remote FF from Birger mount.

...plus a little secret sauce that we threw in...

You can't fool us... we all know it's "Thousand Island" dressing.

Also, when we announce our auto-focus tool...

Huh!? ... We're going to have auto-focus for our Red/Birger setup? Really?! Am I reading this wrong? Please say it's true. I would love to be able to shoot hand-held at f/1.2 and not worry about focusing. :)

Like I said earlier Takano-san is talking about a problem that we have worked around. Also, when we announce our auto-focus tool, it won't suddenly make the mount do something bad with the lenses...

Erik, Thanks for the feedback. So, Takana-san raised a real issue, but you had already the workaround. Sounds very very good.

Do you mean you are going to introduce an autofocus to the Birger Red One mount?

Also, when we announce our auto-focus tool...

Erik's revolutionary 3D auto focus tool that he developed for Homeland Security. I have followed Erik from the beginning and forget little. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

You can't fool us... we all know it's "Thousand Island" dressing.

LOL-Post of the Day!

It's finally here!!!

It's finally here!!!

Guess who turned up today!

Kind of ironical - most here have the Redhead with no mount...

Peter,

Hope it is OK if I hate you, just a little bit....... :)

Features of this new 24mm lens:

Fast f/1.4 aperture
Aspherical and UD lens elements for correction of chromatic aberration
Sub Wavelength structure Coating (SWC) to dramatically reduce ghosting and flare
Circular aperture for pleasing bokeh
USM for full-time manual focus
Lead-free glass (RoHS compliance)
Lens hood and pouch supplied

I would be really curious to see how this modern design lens stacks up against an ultra prime (it's actually faster) or master prime.

We are really starting to see full use of aspherical and UD technology (as well as new coatings) as Canon starts to up the quality of the entire lens line for the new 22+ megapixel cameras.

With coverage for full frame SLR, we would be shooting only the center portion of the lens on the RED and I suspect the quality is VERY high.

Mike,

Do not have the Mk2 version of the lens ... but very happy with my Mk1 results ;-) ... unfortunately I do not have a masterprime to compare it to.

What's the latest Birger news on :

- focus knob ?
- raw focus/aperture knob component(s) for underwater housing folk ? (given that you chase Erik every day on the subject ;-)

BTW the Tokina 11-16 seems to work great. Wide open it suffers from mild CA at the 11mm mark, but not a bad lens for the £.
The Birger controls the aperture fine. When the lens is set to AF; Birger middle button does force to map the lens focus throw.

Was it today that the Birger s/w gets released ?

Cheers

Erik, can you give us any updates about the Nikon mount, whether you've started work on it, when you expect to, whether any of these "motor burnout" issues will affect the Nikon differently, etc.?

Birger arrived

Birger arrived

Arrived and looks pretty good.

One of my engineers wanted me to point out that the USM motors are piezoelectric, not electromagnetic...

Thank you Erik, good to know. In fact, should have thought about it in more details as the wording ultrasonic motors already points to a piezoelectric actuators. (A blunder from my side.)

So, DC-motors have the coils but USM motors have a kind of piezoelectric actuator. Consequently, the argument of the crosss-section of wire does not apply to USM's.

Both DC and USM motors are electromagnetic systems -in case of USM's most of the energy is stored in the electric field and in case of DC-motors magnetic energy is dominant. And, what is rock solid is, all the power feeded from the mount/camera to the lens will be eventually transferred to heat. This is the key issue and one and the same energy-principle (Thevenin-Norton or the dual version Poynting's theorem) applies in both cases. And btw, this is also why Red One warms up so much; The power taken from the battery converts to heat inside the camera body.

Furthermore, what is also true is, the faster the AF the higher torque is needed. And to get a higher torque more power is needed. If AF speed was a design criteria behind USM lenses, then Canon may have exploited the fact that short term pulses of energy can be much higher than "continuous pulses".

Evidently, this says nothing specific about the Birger mount, and it's good and reliefing to know you've taken all this into account.

How do we reserve/buy these? I've called and emailed and never received a response. Has the lead time been established yet and are the shipping models the finalized versions?

The website doesn't seem to have any sort of information.

Peter Majtan and OneCam, I've added you to the list. There are more people coming out of the wood work saying that they have received there mount and this is the first I've heard that they actually ordered.

Erik I hope you don't think I am busting your balls by continuing to post this list. I am sure *(hint, hint*) when I get my mount I won't have anymore time to post here.....

What is your Birger Confirmation number? PM me..........

Erik or Amy, can you tell us where you are at on your list? How many mounts are getting out the door? It seems like it's only a handful every few days. At this rate, it'll be another month or so. :(

Please...

...please take care of customer service.

Thank you.

Quick update...

Quick update...

I was tied up with production and customers today, so I did not get to testing the mac/pc applications, and putting them up on our web site. I expect to do this friday or saturday.

There are a few customers left that have received their "shipping" emails, but not yet received a tracking number. We expect to catch up on these thursday and friday. Once this is finished we will evaluate schedule for the remaining mounts and knobs on order, and announce our plan for fulfillment.

We are getting caught up. I am very pleased with our quality control, so I think the delays, though frustrating, were worthwhile. Now that we have things under control, I will do my best to appropriately manage expectations going forward.

I am very pleased with the feedback that we are getting so far. Remember, we are in this for the long haul. This is only the start.

Thanks for the report Erik. It really helps.

When are you going to start teasing us more (ala Jim Jannard) about that auto-focus... or where you just kidding?

Birger Test Footage

Birger Test Footage

Hello All,

I shot some real-world test footage on the streets of NYC with the Birger Mount. The only lens used was the Canon 24-70 2.8L, which worked flawlessly with the mount.

The mount was easy to install and has worked perfectly for the past two days.

There is a bit of tightness when turning the lens into the mount, much more than a Canon SLR. Is this normal Eric?

This is a simple hand-held test using available light and no ND.

In my next tests, I'll apply some serious ND to get a more romantic look.
