  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

If he's planning on doing everything him self, then definitely he is in trouble.
I have canceled my order some time ago and I never got any confirmation.
Hope my #25 will not shipp, for I don't live there anymore and simply don't need the mount at this time.

You mean to say you never got your refund?

You're joking, right ?

Considering the fact that nobody posted about receiving their tracking number, I'd guess that no RED mounts shipped since Erik announced a "big shipping day tomorrow" two weeks ago.

We ought to stop kidding ourselves. It ships when it ships, and that may be much later than we think.

Mine just arrived via FedEx.

I whipped it open and it does look very nicely built. I hooked up power to it and popped on the lenses I currently own and all 3 worked the iris. (focus appears to calibrate but can't be tested).

24mm 1.4L
35mm 1.4L
17-55 2.8 IS

One quick tip. The 35mm didn't respond at first. If you push the 2 outer control buttons at the same time this will spin your aperture wide open. When I did that communication with my 35mm began and it worked from there.

I'd install it right now, but the camera is going out tomorrow. Sunday for me. Looks promising.

Erik, where's my knob? :clown2:

arrived, installed and tested the following lenses succesfully (focus calibration and iris control)

tokina 11-16 f2.8
canon 16-35 f2.8
canon 17-55 f2.8IS (haven't figured out a test for the IS yet)
canon 24 f1.4
canon 24-70 f2.8
canon 50 f1.4
canon 50 f1.2
canon 70-200 f2.8

also with a nikon mount adapter I was able to use all my manual nikon lenses.

The sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6 full frame canon mount did not work however. It wouldn't map the focus and at one point, started the camera recording when I was pressing the focus and iris buttons. Iris didn't seem to work either.

It is real, it is shipping.

Thanks Erik.

There are a lot of one-sided and/or incorrect stories floating around here on the board, that we had felt no need to tell our side of, until now. For example:

  • I find it amusing that a person might be worried that we would ship his mount anyway, after cancelling his order, having not even paid in his deposit. The credit card was declined the first time we tried to run it. When asked in May to clear this up, he told us he would pay the deposit in July, and yet we did not cancel his order. There never even was a deposit paid in to be refunded. Don't hear him including those details. Do you?

  • There is the dynamic duo, that has an entire folder dedicated to them because every few days they decide to change their minds yet again. They publicly complained that we did not answer all of their emails. They have since appologized privately, so I am leaving their names out of it.

  • 1Dog's list is far from complete. Just Amy and I (really, just Amy) know who is where on the list, and how many units have shipped.

  • As of a few days ago, everybody that asked for a refund has received a refund. I say a few days ago, as this was the last time I checked.
Any other complainers want me to tell Amy's or my personal story about them publicly? You know who you are. If so, please feel free to accuse me of being dishonest or incompetent again, publicly. Shipping notices, containing tracking numbers, will continue to be sent. I will allow those emails to speak for me.

Looks like the antenna, if mounted on top, will bang into the ET EVF mount knob. I think a right angle antenna might solve it. I guess you could mount the Birger at a 90 degree angle, but that doesn't seem to be ideal.

Can anyone with an ET EVF mount verify this potential issue?

Everyone... if you get a tracking # or mount, can you please post the date you ordered the mount? I think posting the order date will be the best gauge of progress. At least we'll know if we're still in early, mid, late december, etc.

Thanks.

Hello my good RED friends. This is very nice product but I would like to tell cautionary warnings for using EOS USM lenses on video camera.

I was member of team to design the USM long time and they no good for video and can cause bad trouble to USM motor mechanism for signal active very long time. For this reasons, we do not put still photo USM lens on Canon video lens products. In testing we burn motors inside USM lens on XL2 product. Just be warning for my friends to use no USM motor lenses. Normal Lenses ok!!

Takano San, in your testing, how long did it take to burn the motors?

No offense, takano-san, can you or anyone else verify this?

Well so far as I am concerned every mail I sent to Birger got a prompt, polite and helpful response.

Im only speaking as I find and Im not even a customer as yet.

Mr. Jason. It very random times. Sometimes many hours, some many days. problem because active signal to motor always video and no break like still camera product. Low prices lens do much longer time than professional L type lens.

takano, is the usm motor engaged when the lens is set on manual focus? Would it be ok to use it like that? or is the usm motor always engaged whether on auto or manul?

So if I understand this correctly, Erik's or anyone elses, knob focusing system would eventually burn the motor, and if it's an L lens, even quicker. Some people have been using them for awhile know, right? We're going to start getting reports of burned out motors? This is game changing, if I'm understanding it correctly. Hopefully someone will correct me and say that's not the case with the mount because....

Takano-san, with all due respect, you are making assumptions about what we are doing that are not correct. Further, I find your assertion in direct contradiction to my experience, as the low priced lenses (with DC motors, i.e. 50mm f/2.5 MACRO) are actually the ones that tend to break when used continuously, not the direct drive "ring-type" USM motors.

That is not the case with the mount because we are aware of what Takano-san is talking about, and have already accounted for this in our implementation.

On 9 June 1999 we shipped our first Canon lens controller. We have shipped more than 1,000 lens controllers since that date. We don't just have experience in the lab, we also have significant experience in the field.

Oh yeah, I forgot Erik has a lot of previous experience with all this stuff. I remember that was one of the reasons I bought into all this.

Whew. Panic attack taken care of.

I started to think I'd have to eventually go buy an ff from viewfactor.

Okay... back to normal.

Tracking # please!

And where's my knob!

lol. :)

Mr. Widding. I am very happy to understand you are modification each USM motor in your customer lens. it was very big problem for us and very sad for us as we like to sell USM on our video product. What custom motors you use now frankly yes?

I have sent Takano-san a PM asking him to email me directly. If he is who he says he is, it will come quickly and be easily traceable back to a server owned by his employer. I look forward to receiving that email.

It's arrived! It's alive! Thanks Erik!

I don't think what Takano-san says makes much sense. I am not a Canon insider and not an expert on their technology, but EF mount has been on the market for 20 years and photographers often use AF Servo mode.
AF Servo engages lens motor continuously while tracking moving objects. That mode behaves pretty much like camcorder's Auto Focus. If there were problems with lens motors or USM drives, we would have heard complaints from many professional photographers all over the world. In fact, USM drive consumes less power than motor drive so what Erik said about cheaper lenses with DC motors tend to break more often than USM drives makes sense.
Having said that, it is possible if focus is engaged non-stop for hours, something may break, but not because of some technology limitations, but due to natural wear and tear.
Just my 2 cents.
