  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

What I like about the Birger mount is that it is an "elegant" solution. Meaning everything is controlled internally, which is perfect for lightweight Red One configurations. You can control everything from the knob/remote (of course that supposes they'll become available someday). Too bad there is now the need for this cable running to the back of the camera. Still, the Birger mount is the only solution offering FF capabilities without having to mount rods on the camera.

Well, don't know about the original price, but the Birger website states (besides "July 2008 - Cinema Lens Mounts for the RED ONE Camera are now shipping"):

Smart Lens Mount $900
Adapter for RED $300
Rail Mount Know $300
Cable (needs 2) $150

Total for basic set: $1650 (approx. 1200 EUR), $600 more for the bluetooth option.

So, cost-wise there is not much difference between these two mounts (unless you take into account time spent sifting through this very thread...)

Unless something magical happens very soon, I'll go for IMS.

the Birger mount is [...] perfect for lightweight Red One configurations.
If you are doing focus yourself, you can also focus directly on the lens, which is the "classical" light weight configuration, and even lighter than the knob/cable solution that Birger offers/requires. Put the battery on your belt, shoot with CF, use a Contax 45mm sandwich lens, and you are as lightweight as you can get on a Red One.

But if your shot does require a Focus Puller, then Birger is indeed a very elegant, light-weight solution. Especially once it is shipped and in your hands.

You guys aren't mentioning the fact that canon EF lens have no external iris control. The IMS offers no way to control the iris on Canon lenses. This is the primary reason that the birger is so attractive, in addition to the electronic control of focus. In every other way it is most likely that the IMS is a better solution than the Birger, and P+S have an excellent track record and history in the motion picture industry. Birger, none. But always shooting with your lenses wide open is a big draw back for most people.

canon EF lens have no external iris control
Another beauty of the old-school manual lenses...

You always have the option of selling your EF lenses at a decent price, and then buy good manual lenses second hand.

I got a (almost) full set of Zeiss Contax primes for less then what a comparable EF set would cost new.

If I had a good set of EF lenses AND Birger was shipping, this would be a no-brainer.

If IMS did not void the warranty, it would also be a pretty simple decision for me to make.

If you are locked into Canon lenses, then as per today, the choice is between voiding your warranty and not being able to use your camera at all. If you love your Canon lenses and can afford to wait, then do wait.

If you love your Canon lenses and can wait a while, but want to try your camera, get a cheap Nikon and the $500 Nikon mount.

Otherwise, either go for the Nikon mount (and get locked into manual Nikons), find some affordable PL glass (good luck!) or go for IMS.

Time to sleep for me...

What I like about the IMS is not being locked into a lens system. Hey, once the Red Primes come, I can use them without removing my mount. No cables to break, no suftware that might freeze.

I was initially very excited by the idea behind the Birger, but as time passed and passed and passed, I started researching other options.

You can get very good lenses for Contax mount, made by Zeiss and of very solid build. No plastics and long focus throws. No electronics needed.

As new lenses become available, you don't have to wait until they become available in canon mount.

I do see advantages for the Birger in these situations:

A) remote control of lens functions needed, but lens motors not feasible
B) existing collection of excellent Canon lenses
C) need to have the warranty intact
D) strong will to be patient

Martin:

I agree that Contax Yashica lenses are a great manual option. I have been using them on my original Birger mount (which required external computer control for Canon EF) as manual lenses with the birger acting as a "dumb" mount since January - and they are excellent - superior both optically and especially mechanically to most of the Nikons people typically use.

I got one of the first final (current) versions of the Birger mount but have been letting one of my underwater housing customers use it so back to the C/Y but as soon as it returns and we get knobs I will be selling most of my collection of C/Y lenses (25, 35, 50 (2), 85 and 300mm (2)) I will keep one of the 50 f1.4s as my emergency/low light lens as well as a 300 for a while until I decide on a super long Canon EF (I have a 70-200 f2.8L series zoom)

But the thing to remember about all the C/Y lenses is that they are great if you are pulling focus by hand yourself but once you get into follow focus units you can easily spend as much or more on one as on a birger mount/electronic follow focus.

Longer 35mm lens support ?

Longer 35mm lens support ?

Has anybody come accross a simple (adaptable) long lens mount support ? Something that could work with IMS, Birger, Nikon mounts to support lenses > 200mm ? with an adjustable height position ?

Any SIMPLE solution welcome. I remember reading a thread somewhere (I think it was Aqua) commenting on something Doug U had made ... but cannot locate it arghhh ...

Cheers

PS : I assume nobody has received a Birger tracking # email notification ?!@*&^$"%$ :ranting2:

Lens support

It was doug underdahl - he showed it at the NAB reduser party. It was a fairly simple but pretty slick device. basically a 1/4-20 threaded stud which went to a plastic clamp that went around the lens. The cool thing was the nut was a spring loaded split nut that could be quickly clamped on the 1/4 -20 thread close to the right place and then turned a bit to adjust it perfectly. (Similar to the quick clamp stop used on a bridgeport milling machine as a drill stop to set depth.)

Contact Doug to see if he ever made a bunch. If he got too busy with other stuff and doesn't want to pursue it we could probably make them, but certainly don't want to steal his idea.

How is Erik shipping anyway? FedEx? There must be some tracking numbers, right? So it's not like Erik shipped monday to people and they'll get a surprise on their doorstep, right? Erik said he shipped, so there must be tracking numbers.

Erik?

Erik?

Isn't there normally a one-day tracking number delay with Fedex?

I am no longer going to make any forward looking statements.

We start shipping again today.

Well, you already blew it because the latter is blatantly "forward looking." We don't know if anything actually shipped on that day, or the days following for that matter.

Erik, please, please, please communicate with us; at least those of us who have paid in full. Please.

Oh no,

More dilemma in my life. I'm going to be in a docu roadtrip from October 10th. I'd love to be able to use my Canon lenses and Eric is supposed to be "shipping Again" whatever that means.

Alesniaks mount seems to be coming along pretty well and it is really tempting for me if his shipping dates are correct, not to mention the possibilities of controlling the mount via Iphone in the long term.
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=17454&page=5

So who is going to win my heart? Alesniaks or Birgers? I don't think I have budget for both, (considering I just spent 500$ for a temp Nikon mount) so it only comes down to 1. Like in the movie "Highlander" I just hope the winner don't chop his opponent head off; after so much hard work on both sides it would a petty. :waaa:

I am in the 108 Birgers batch. And that doesn't look pretty good for Birger, considering that 107 with full paid credit cards, hasn't got theirs yet.

So for now, the only thing certain is that nothing is certain in the battle of Canon mounts and we don't know who's going to be shipping first. Oh, well I forgot that Birger already shipped 50 mounts or so, well then, I guess we have a winner???

So there you go Again with my endless dilemma.

To cancel Birger Mount or not to cancel, that is the question.

There are too many variables in place, Weddings, honeymoons, mystery tracking numbers, Mysterious EOS mounts from mysterious people. What can I do? Please wise people, I need help!!

You forgot one important point : SUPPORT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Given what we have experienced to date (and yes, WE STILL DO NOT HAVE A TRACKING NUMBER) I've just emailed Erik my deadline; ship a working mount by Friday or refund in full please.

Alesniaks is as busy as all of us BUT he does COMMUNICATE ... good or bad. AND he is using the RED lens mount base (for back focus adjustment) and you can see what aperture one is using ... the rest of the smart stuff I'm happy to wait for !!!

Most probably my last post on this thread ... :angry03:

In the past he has said 'shipping' then later revealed that only non-red mounts have gone out in the field, or mostly.

If 'shipping' is not related to our mount then it isn't much help. If Erik could give just an estimate at the end of the day on how many Red mounts were shipped then we'd all have a better idea about how fast things are progressing.

So maybe Erik did ship, but maybe not our mount.

I don't understand why he would announce he is "shipping" on the REDuser forum and not ship the mounts intended for the Red camera.

Have a feeling that listing the order #s, shipped, would sure go a long way with this group.

He says "it's shipping" as a sort of carrot to keep us going with him. Otherwise we'd all have bought alternative mounts at the beginning of the year, or purchased PL lenses.

If he doesn't actually ship to everyone in the 107's this time... I think things are going to get seriously ugly.
