  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I got the Red Nikon mount a week ago for 354,42 Euros. It works great with the Nikon primes I have. When scaled to 2K it's almost equal to the Cooke lenses I have used till now.

Now I can lean back and wait till my Birger mount is shipping. And I can stop checking the forum any day for some update info. To me that's definitely worth the 350 extra-bugs :)

If only my Redrock Micro MatteBox would be shipping...

Why almost equal?

Why not equal at 4k too?

They shouldn't be inferior.

Unfortunately, those of us with Canon lenses don't have many alternatives.

Well, I have older, full-frame Nikkors (cannot use my DX yet, since I need the Birger to control the iris on those). That means I'm only using approx. 1/4 of the projection-area which results in a softer image. See here, http://zinner.org/z/plogger/index.php?level=picture&id=40

Further, the lenses are not very sharp when fully open. I have to step down to get to the sweet spot of the lens, around f4 on most.

Last but not least, they are all manual focus lenses and pulling the focus is quite hard as the span you need to turn the focus ring to get from infinity to 0.30m is only a 1/4 a turn on the glass and 3/4 turn on the Redrock Micro Follow-Focus.

This simply does not compare to Cooke glass, e.g. check out the zoom I had the privilege to use for the last couple of months http://www.cookeoptics.com/cooke.nsf/secondary/cxxzoom and I also used some of the primes. They are sharp as hell even fully open at T2 and a joy to work with.

But I don't care much because my target resolution is 2K anyway, and once the Birger mount is here and we can us DX glass the situation should improve.

Only if you expect your 600 Euro lens to perform equally to 40k Euro glass, you will definitely need a reality check :)

I wouldn't be so sure. Nikkors 14-24 & 24-70, for example, should match any Cooke. Full-frame, yeah. Why DX? Seems to me you're alone here. DX doesn't necessarily mean more performance only because the Red sensor has a similar size IMO. On your "600 Euro - 40k Euro glass" comparison, have you heard about economies of scale?

I'm starting to agree the nikon mount is the way to go as a temp solution for the next couple months. I can learn a lot in 2 months. The nikon 50 1.4 is a lovely lens and can be had used for under $300 USD. When it's all said and done, you can sell the 50 1.4 for what you paid for it and quite likely the nikon mount for a loss. If I asked you if you'd pay $150 to have a 50mm 1.4 lens to work with for a couple months would you do it? If the birger mount doesn't show up until the fall, then it becomes an even better idea and a brilliant idea a year from now. If you get booked for a gig, used nikon primes can be had for a relative fraction of PL glass. PLUS, they are cheap to rent and readily available in most cities. The nikon mount isn't what we wanted but it is shipping. As soon as build 16 goes beta, I'm placing my nikon mount order.

Zinner will soon "clean his shoes" with 40K Euro glass :) :) :) .

Still photo glass stikes back soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to make all the way very clear:

PST IMS will include Birger EF mount as soon as it will be available.

Also still lenses from other brands than Nikon used as cine lenses

don't suffer in any similar way as Nikkors.

I have a Red One now. It's sitting in my closet safe. Sometimes I take it out to admire it. Sometimes, if it's windy, I'll take it out and put it on my papers to prevent them from being blown away... or I'll put it up against the door so it won't slam shut.

You shouldn't let your one-year warranty drip-drip away without testing and using the camera, just because you're waiting on a Birger. These cameras need tested and used. A Nikon mount and an inexpensive lens is a good idea.

As painful as it was i bought a RED 18-50 to use until the Canon mount is available and reliable. I wanted to get to use the camera so I know it and all it's personality traits. f I would have thought a bit more about it I would have considered the Nikon mount as a temp solution. It is nice using the cinema lens though. How much cash I bring in will determine its fate.

You can get some amazing old manual 50 1.4/1.8 Nikons for allot less than $300. Who needs the fancy schmancy Ai-S on the RED? That is unless Birger bring out their Nikon mount.... which could be sometime... maybe... this year?

has anyone heard if the beta testers have gotten theirs yet? Aqua, any news? you're in the inner circle.

Sanjin, could you elaborate on this one. I thought one had to chose between replacing the Red/PL mount with the Birger or the IMS. Do I understand you correctly that you can have the IMS and put the Birger into it?

Wouldn't that mean that I get the best of both (or 7) worlds?

And if that is true, then I would love for Red to offer the IMS as a from-factory option, just like the Nikon mount.

--------

Any bets: what comes first: view # 100.000 on this thread or the Birger itself?

:detective2:

We just have to wait for Birger.

PST is interested in that option too and for sure they will do it if it is technically possible.

no reply here.

just curious. erik charged me a partial amount. has anyone been charged the full amount?

same here, deposit only. I'm waiting patiently, Eric please take my money...

I was charged the full amount back in november since I checked that option on the fax sheet. I have not however been charged shipping or gotten any emails to that effect. I think the next sign is aqua or one of the beta testers are supposed to get the beta units. I hope Erik is ok, he usually says something by now.
