  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I was charged the full amount back in november since I checked that option on the fax sheet. I have not however been charged shipping or gotten any emails to that effect. I think the next sign is aqua or one of the beta testers are supposed to get the beta units. I hope Erik is ok, he usually says something by now.

Erik is OK. I spoke to him yesterday. We were pushing hard last week to get 2 mounts for a client (underwater and abovewater) shoot in the channel islands with remote surface lens adjustment on Wednesday. Friday (Last friday) night he had a glitch where he thought the new software wasn't communicating - turned out it was a problem with his loaner RED camera. I sent him my camera and he figured it out, but it was too late to make sense out of trying to do it all for wednesday (it was rushing a bit anyway) so they used PL lenses and Erik is doing final software proofing this weekend. He was playing with the 24-70L and said there is virtually no breathing and he is trying to locate a LEXAR UDMA 300x cf card in boston to record some footage. He said he is really happy with how the latest version of the software is working and thinks there will be a stack of fedex boxes to show us on Monday and maybe some breathing test examples if he can figure out how to output some files.

He just bought some macs but doesn't have final cut yet, so can he output a quicktime file for us directly out of RED alert?

Hope the intern is still around so I can get my deposit back.

:P

EDIT: Wow! I posted that and an hour later I had my deposit back. Thanks much, guys! I'll definitely check back in a few months to see how it's going. I'll probably end up getting one this fall, but I am really happy with these Zeiss ZF lenses. Decided to put the money there for now. Even picked up a Nikon to Canon adapter so I could use them on my 1ds MKIII. Good luck!

yes, as long as he has Quicktime and the Quicktime plugin downloaded from the RED support page - they labeled it the Final Cut Studio 2 REDCODE Plugin, but it is really a Quicktime plugin, so even if he does not have Final Cut installed, it will just work with Quicktime (allowing playback of proxies and outputting through RA/RC via Quicktime).

If he has to choose between sending out the mounts and sending out the sample footage, I'd rather he focused on sending out the mounts.

Thanks Aquaman, that sounds sweeeet! When you talk about "breathing" d'you mean Erik has already added the breathing compensation feature to the mount?

No, just that the 24-70 is very good as regards to breathing.

Hope the intern is still around so I can get my deposit back.

I doubt if you would have any problem, just send an email with "request for deposit refund" and I am sure it would get prioritized and you would get it very quickly.

I know everyone is frustrated but look how long it took RED to get a nikon "dumb" mount. Erik's challenge was MUCH harder as besides making it SMART he had to make everything fit - circuit board; serial port and bluetooth; 3 buttons; two or three Lemo connectors; a dozen or so lens interface pins; etc. into a Canon sized compatible mount and then make THAT fit the RED. I don't mean to be an apologist for Birger - I'm just as antsy as anyone since a good part of my business depends on it - rather I understand the problem of a difficult development where only one or two people are on the development team (and it is impractical to bring anyone else up to speed anyway) and how every little setback adds up to days of delays.

If he has to choose between sending out the mounts and sending out the sample footage, I'd rather he focused on sending out the mounts.

I didn't mean to imply that - he just mentioned it in passing - he discovered the breathing performance while working on the collimation procedures which involves testing the likely lenses people will have. He also may need some footage to provide documentation for the collimation procedure.

And about the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, same performance as far as breathing concerns?

He has my 17-55 so will be using it this weekend too. I bought the 17-55 rather than the 24-70 because I believe it is essentially the same optical design as the 24-70 scaled down for APS-C (and RED) sized sensor - but being the most modern lens it also has IS which is great for stills and I think people are going to find out soon that it is nice on RED as well and will provide capability that just isn't available (or likely to be any time soon) on the normal cine lenses.

Same idea here. That's why I'm wondering...

OT & BTW, I sent you a PM. Please, check your PM box. Thanks.

Great news. Thanks for the update Aqua. I thought it might come down to Erik qc'ing the software part of it.

Now, I'm hoping the installation is easy. Will collimation, etc. be an issue? (I am clueless here)

Fed Ex!

Fed Ex!

Erik, please, when you fed ex it, please request the tracking feature! Fed Ex has left my red camera body and other red shipments at my door despite Red requiring a signature. If I can get the tracking email, I can call fed ex and tell them that I'll pick it up instead! Thanks!!!!

sorry me.. but this kind of practice seems to me a sort of 3rd world thing.. strange.. too much strange from a strict western european viewpoint.. don't you have lawyers out there in the US?.. :)

Precise collimation of the pl mount on the RED is not an easy task even for experienced people - some of the traditional methods for a film camera can't be used because of the OLP filter among other things - and it is hard for a newbie or those coming from the video world to feel confident they have it precisely. (You can tell when you have it close, but close isn't necessarily good enough for 4K)

Part of the more intense software design is creating a relatively easy method for us users to do collimation. Erik has pretested several wide zooms and created a part of the software that with a few cycles of focus/zoom and checking the values that the lens is sending out, the software lets you know precisely when you hit it.

Since RED gets there hands on every camera before it goes out, they can have a sophisticated collimation setup to quickly set every camera up before it goes out (and then you are on your own in the future). This isn't practical for Birger, so he had to come up with a good way for us to do this ourselves. The bonus is now that he has created it, we can check it at anytime and be confident we are dead on.

lawyers for what?

I found out from talking to the Fed Ex rep that if the value is declared at $500 or more, the fed ex delivery guy can't leave it without getting a signature. In fact, it's impossible because if he tries to scan it to be able to leave it at the door, the scanner won't work and give him a beep. To me, it sounds better then signature required. I think the cost is 60 cents for every $100, so a declared value of $500 would cost an extra $3.00 or $1,500 would be $9. I would be willing to pay that Erick. Not only would it prevent it from being left at the door, it provides extra insurance as well for a relatively inexpensive additional cost.

By the way, although Fed Ex told me twice that they no longer have the "signature on file" policy, this policy was cited in my fed ex tracking email as the reason they left it at my door. Ironically, I can't turn it off because there isn't a policy to turn off and so the driver is given the discretion of whether or not to leave it.
