Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We haven't received the mounts yet. They are still "one week" away

Thanks for the update, Erik. It would be fantastic if you could ship late next week.

Yes, your right, I am getting ahead of myself.

I must admit I'm more excited about Birger mount then any other of fantastic gear I've been reading about for the past two years.

It's great to hear from Erik whom I always trusted would deliver only when it was ready.

Now I just can't wait for a new thread - The Birger Mount Tests...

Monday week or the week after, surly not the week after that.

Rock on Erik!

If the numbers are any indication of how much units Erik will sell...

... Erik will be buying the island next to Jim. :)

Iris reading/Sigma 120-300 f2.8/order today?

Iris reading/Sigma 120-300 f2.8/order today?

Pardon me if some of these questions have been answered before, and if so, could someone please direct me:

1) Where would I find the iris values using EF-lenses with the Birger mount? (Will it be enabled in the RED display when the /i is enabled?)
2) Is Birger planning to make the Canon mounted Sigma 120-300 f2.8 compatible? (Maybe it already is.)
3) Birger is about to ship orders. If I order today when would it be realistic to expect it to ship?

Thanks!

Calle

calle.... i only got sigma lenses. and 2 canon lenses. i'm afraid not all are going to work with the birger mount. maybe none of them will work... Erik clearly mentioned that Aqua's sigma ef mount lens did not work on the birger mount (this test was done during nab).

Erik.

crazy question. on my Canon 40D I change the focus point a lot... to top corner or bottom center etc... when auto focus comes out for Birger... several months? will we be able to set which point to focus on, not just center frame?

mike

Focus point is a function of the camera body, not the lens. Any autofocus that Birger comes up with can't work quite the same way as a Canon DSLR - it would have to rely on processing the electronic Red image, rather than optically. Theoretically it would be possible to select different points though, or even regions, and would not necessarily be limited to fixed locations - I suspect it won't be easy to match the speed and response of Canon's mature hardwired system though!

Sigma's Canon-Mount lenses use the same electronic protocol as Canon lenses, so why would it not work?

If it was precisely the same, then it would work. However AFAIK Canon has never licensed their EF mount; Sigma and the other 3rd party lens mfg's have just reverse-engineered it. When Canon comes out with a new camera body, often the 3rd party lenses still work ok. However, sometimes they don't. Usually, at that point Sigma or whoever updates their lens by replacing a chip.

Erik I am so excited to pay you in full. I feel that Monday I will get to do this!. Hope things are going ok.

i hope so too...

according to Erik... the betas should be out... i dont see any footage from em.

i really hope he starts shipping on the 30th of this month.

I haven't heard of any Sigma lenses having issues on Canon bodies for many years now, since back when the Canon 10D was released. I guess we'll see any issues creep out once people start using the Birger mount. I have five different Sigma lenses waiting for the Birger mount that I hope won't have any problems.

If Birger has to update their mount with new protocol rules, would that require sending the Birger mount to the factory or does the mount support downloadable firmware upgrades?

I think Erik mentionned that upgrades should be possible via bluetooth.
But maybe he would need access to the lenses in order to code the appropriate protocol for each lens?

i've got 6... 70-200 f2.8, 18-50 f2.8, shitty 170-500 f5-f6.3, 20 f1.8, 12-24 f4.5-5.6, 24-70 f2.8
one of these have been tested not to work... it's either the 24-70 or the 17-50 dunno which one aqua had.

i think its a little tougher than just updating the coding... sigma changes it's chips everytime a newer canon thing pops into its mount... but then i guess it can depend. also... having direct access to the software to a lens's chip is different than changing the os software on a dslr. so updating mount software could do the trick. i really hope the mount can be updatable to cope with sigma ef mounts.

Erik didn't really promise sigma ef compatibility .. he simply hoped that it would work... incase it does not... we can always bitch, beg and nag about it.... =D =P

Has there been any news on whether the Canon mounts are shipping?

I have written on several occasions to find out how to pay him (my credit card that I used for the non-deposit. . . it was never charged that I can tell. . . has now expired and I need to give him a new one), but I have never heard from him.

The one thing I DO know is that I have a movie that starts shooting on May 19th, and I was hoping to have the mount in time to use for this film.

I think every time Sigma updates their lens chips, they are getting closer and closer to an identical command set to the Canon lenses. Eventually, if they haven't already gotten there, the two should be identical. Perhaps check with Sigma to see of that incompatible lens is due for a chip upgrade? I had a Sigma 70-210 f4.5-5.6 that I sent in for a chip upgrade several years back and it was a pretty painless and nearly cost-free operation. The lens worked great after that.

A lot of the people buying the Birger mount are using EF lenses to save money over buying PL lenses; being money-conscious, it would make sense those same people would be interested in saving money by going with the cheaper Sigma lenses over the Canon lenses. Even if they don't like Sigma glass over Canon, there are lenses offered by Sigma that aren't made by Canon, with different bokehs, zoom ranges, breathing, etc. So with that in mind, hopefully Birger will put some good effort towards building up compatibility with a wide range of Sigma lenses.

Yeah, I want to mount this little guy on my Red. :)
