Passing time ... guessing at your conf. numbers
Passing time ... guessing at your conf. numbers
- Warning, complete, unfounded guessing ahead -
Without knowing Erik or working at Birger I can only guess at what your confirmation number means, but while we are waiting for our mounts guessing is as good a way to pass the time as any. I know confirmations are a sensitive subject, so I apologize in advance if this annoys anyone.
To start with, we know Birger is a precision engineering firm - just look at the mathematical beauty of the mount's collimating feature - which means that the numbers must mean something...
Since Birger was founded in 1999 (at least birger.com was first registered in early 1999), I guess that the first three numbers, (the 107 in your particular conf. number) are the month. My math, gives me Nov. 2007 as being 107 months since the start of 1999. Someone else mentioned a January 2008 order getting a confirmation that began 109.
The next 2 numbers are easy, since they relate to the date on the fax sent in with your order ... in your case the 107.24 translates to your order being faxed on Nov.2007, 24th.
Now Birger is precise, so I'm guessing the next 2 numbers are the hour of the day. Since you are in the UK, it is very reasonable that you would send a fax that would arrive at Birger at 8am EST, hence the 08. I think I sent ours in the morning as well (although on the 26th), so the 09 I have in that place in our own confirmation makes sense.
Now the last 2 numbers, hmmm...I'm guessing those represent the order number/invoice number for a given month. In post #23 of this lengthy thread, Erik gives percentages for the orders as of the morning of Nov. 24th as 80% Canon, 20% Nikon and 0% for both FourThirds and Sigma. Again, since Erik is exacting he wouldn't round off to 80% and 20% if the numbers were really 82% and and 18%, so I'm guessing (totally) that he had 20 orders when he checked prior to making that post at 9:36AM on the morning of Nov. 24th.
So you absolutely, positively are the 14th order submitted in the 8th hour (US Eastern Standard Time) on the 24th day of the 107th month since the beginning of the year in which Birger began operations.
Now the question is whether these numbers are specific to the mounts or if they are used for all orders/invoices in the Birger billing system. If that number means 14th order/invoice for anything Birger billed for in Nov. 07, you might actually be in the first 10 if enough non-red-mount orders were received prior to your fax that month.
And I am #58 in the list of orders, submitted in the 9th hour on the 26th day of the 107th month... or 107.260958
And the final guess. The confirmations not sent out for November orders are those that came in over order #99. There simply wasn't a place in the order number system for the extra digit and instead of spending time trying to change the system (sort of like a mini-Y2K fix, since the old ones in the system would have to be fixed as well), they just turned their attention to actually building the mount. Since most of their stuff is bigger projects and contracts, they just never thought they'd be sending out over 100 invoices per month.
This is probably all wrong and is absolutely just guessing.
But it is nice to go to sleep tonight knowing that, assuming they can QC and ship 10 orders per day after Erik returns from NAB I should be receiving my mounts by Fed Ex priority mail at approximately 112.2409
