  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Passing time ... guessing at your conf. numbers

Passing time ... guessing at your conf. numbers

(all I have a confirmation number of 107.240814 which means sweet nothing to me).

- Warning, complete, unfounded guessing ahead -

Without knowing Erik or working at Birger I can only guess at what your confirmation number means, but while we are waiting for our mounts guessing is as good a way to pass the time as any. I know confirmations are a sensitive subject, so I apologize in advance if this annoys anyone.

To start with, we know Birger is a precision engineering firm - just look at the mathematical beauty of the mount's collimating feature - which means that the numbers must mean something...

Since Birger was founded in 1999 (at least birger.com was first registered in early 1999), I guess that the first three numbers, (the 107 in your particular conf. number) are the month. My math, gives me Nov. 2007 as being 107 months since the start of 1999. Someone else mentioned a January 2008 order getting a confirmation that began 109.

The next 2 numbers are easy, since they relate to the date on the fax sent in with your order ... in your case the 107.24 translates to your order being faxed on Nov.2007, 24th.

Now Birger is precise, so I'm guessing the next 2 numbers are the hour of the day. Since you are in the UK, it is very reasonable that you would send a fax that would arrive at Birger at 8am EST, hence the 08. I think I sent ours in the morning as well (although on the 26th), so the 09 I have in that place in our own confirmation makes sense.

Now the last 2 numbers, hmmm...I'm guessing those represent the order number/invoice number for a given month. In post #23 of this lengthy thread, Erik gives percentages for the orders as of the morning of Nov. 24th as 80% Canon, 20% Nikon and 0% for both FourThirds and Sigma. Again, since Erik is exacting he wouldn't round off to 80% and 20% if the numbers were really 82% and and 18%, so I'm guessing (totally) that he had 20 orders when he checked prior to making that post at 9:36AM on the morning of Nov. 24th.

So you absolutely, positively are the 14th order submitted in the 8th hour (US Eastern Standard Time) on the 24th day of the 107th month since the beginning of the year in which Birger began operations.

Now the question is whether these numbers are specific to the mounts or if they are used for all orders/invoices in the Birger billing system. If that number means 14th order/invoice for anything Birger billed for in Nov. 07, you might actually be in the first 10 if enough non-red-mount orders were received prior to your fax that month.

And I am #58 in the list of orders, submitted in the 9th hour on the 26th day of the 107th month... or 107.260958

And the final guess. The confirmations not sent out for November orders are those that came in over order #99. There simply wasn't a place in the order number system for the extra digit and instead of spending time trying to change the system (sort of like a mini-Y2K fix, since the old ones in the system would have to be fixed as well), they just turned their attention to actually building the mount. Since most of their stuff is bigger projects and contracts, they just never thought they'd be sending out over 100 invoices per month.

This is probably all wrong and is absolutely just guessing.

But it is nice to go to sleep tonight knowing that, assuming they can QC and ship 10 orders per day after Erik returns from NAB I should be receiving my mounts by Fed Ex priority mail at approximately 112.2409

Walter, quite a thesis ! I hope the conclusion is correct ... if I am #14 then I can only say YEPPPPPPPPYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Back to the Canon EF mount ... Erik uses the word 'software'. Where exactly does this software run ? I must say it's not too clear to me how it all hangs together, but no doubt details will emerge soon enough.

I'm so glad NAB is when it is, a hard milestone for Erik & Co to deliver to

I didn't want to wade through 100 pages of posts, so I think I'll just ask.

I emailed them twice in the last two weeks to see how I can purchase the mount now that my camera is ready, but I didn't hear anything back. Any pointers on how to order the mount? Anyone actually get it yet? Sounds like quite a backlog (aieee).

Go to the first page of this thread, the first post by Erik, and you will find a link to the pdf order form from Birger which has full instructions on it.

SO... if I send in the FAX for the order this week, I would still qualify for the free blue tooth offer? And is the 20% deposit still refundable?

Thanks in advance

Spoke to Erik yesterday, he said that yes, if I send my order in now the Bluetooth offer is still good and the deposit is still refundable.

That was quite a thesis Walter - might need to cut back on the RED BULL. LOL

David: I'm pretty sure the software runs on the circuit board inside the mount. Software involves talking to the lens and determining where it is then issuing the commands to tell the lens where to move its motors for iris and focus. It also communicates to the knobs so you can tell the mount where you want to focus and set iris. I think the knobs are "smart" - i.e. have their own processor and communications as well. You also have communications to the camera with the cooke i/data and because it can communicate with the camera hopefully in the future RED will implement an autoexposure/iris system - but dermining the proper setting is normally an internal camera function based on the sensor information so needs to be done from the RED camera internals. Finally you have the bluetooth wireless which allows wireless remote control and also allows easy updates to the software. I think there is sort of generic software that controls most any EF or EF-S lens but there may also be some tweaking code for specific lenses.

Erik said that the back-focus-turn-number-indicator software utility will run on the wireless control unit.

Mean time you can go to his website and use this utility off the website.

I have one question, Erik mentioned that there is video how to remove the RED PL mount, somewhere.

The only thing I can find is, how to remove front PL ring to install Nikon adapter on RED but for Erik’s mount we have to remove the RED back focus adjustment assembly as well.
Anybody has any idea how to do this?

BTW this thread beats anything I have seen so far 65,600 views and more than 1000 posts.

This pretty much summarises where the RED customers are.
Maybe big cinematography customer is prestigious but the beef is somewhere else.

Now the last 2 numbers, hmmm...

Oh so close... the last two are the minutes of the day. Normally we serialize transactions from the first of the month, with no timestamp beyond the month, but I didn't want the size of our order book to be public information. Too small and there wouldn't be orders. Too large, well you get the picture...

I think after our demo on tuesday the numbers are going to grow again... we left the lab at 11pm last night very happy.

Of course! Why would I ever imagine you would leave it simply at the hour when you could have precision down to the minute. I guess if your fax machine noted time or reception down to the millisecond the confirmation would have just been that much longer.

Thanks for humoring me ... the only problem is now I have no idea where I really am in the que.

Doesn't matter. I have always been sure your mount is going to be great and am happy to wait for it. Now I just need to sell all this silly PL mount glass I have before everyone goes Birger and the bottom drops out of the PL market.

I'll see you at NAB.

Great to hear Erik.

Just one little problem for me now that P+S have their RED version IMS.

We now have P+S IMS which allows a huge range of lenses to be easily mounted on the Red, Red's own badass PL mount, and Birger's smart Canon/Nikon mount. Would've been great to have all the features of these mounts in one universal mount, but looks like we'll have to go with one at a time which is a shame.

Still the Birger mount sounds & looks like it will rock!

I'm still having a hard time grasping the collimation process. Is there a digital readout or something where you'll see the numbers generated by the internal software?

I'm looking forward to the demo at NAB. I think the Birger will trump the P+S for most of us. If I understand correctly, won't need to pruchase follow focus gears either?

I suspect all of these things will get clearer in about a week.

David,

Thanks for the info. Saved me calling up Erik. He seems very, very busy. The product sure looks great.
