  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

  • how does the revised mounts connects to the R1 to enable the aperture / focal length and distance being sent to the R1 ?

  • While you wait for Erik's proper answer, I can give you a preliminary one. The Birger mount has the i-pin connector, and yes, this will work only after the Red One upgrade.

Point accepted BUT, for those of us on the Mk1 Birger mount with R1 Mk1 pin cabling ... having received the RED email to have my R1 upgraded, it would be good to understand the specifics :

  • best to wait for the Mk2 Birger to arrive BEFORE getting the R1 upgraded (I'm not in control of timelines as I have no idea of when Birger is going to ship, so impossible to plan)
  • best to get the R1 upgraded while still having the Mk1 Birger, BUT can the new R1 Mk2 cabling sit with the Birger Mk1 mount (I'm in control of timeline so probably best way forward)
  • is the R1 Mk2 cabling just a push fit PVC type bulkhead (ie: to plug into a female/male socket on the Birger Mk2 mount ?)

We've been here before, at least this time with the agreement in place between Birger and RED it should be simpler ;-) ... subject to knowing when the Mk2 mount & Imperio will actually ships ;-) ;-)

Fun fun fun ...

I've used the Canon EF-S 10-22 on my Red. It's f3.5 sadly but then again, show me a faster 10mm lens for the Canon mount and I'll buy it! Oh how I want a 10mm fast Canon prime....

Quality of this lens is great though, sharp open and razor sharp by f5.6. Highly recommended even though it's not that fast.

Upgrade your RED. Nothing changes with regards to how the Birger is mounted. I've got R1 upgraded and Birger Mk1. When Birger Mk2 shows up there will be an i/data connection. That'll be very neat.

You do know that you are to send in your RED with the PL mount on and not with the Birger, don't you?
If you send it in with the Birger mount it will be rejected for the upgrade until sent in its original configuration.

So, as Joel says, nothing changes as to how the new mount is then "re-installed".

Really? Sweet!! Has this been mentioned on the board and I just missed it?

Proof is on screen... Pretty cool...

Can't wait for Jay's videos... The teaser was great.

Here is the wording in the RED email I've received ... reads differently to me :

Your RED ONE will need to be given to us with the PL MOUNT installed so we can properly test the i/pin support after we perform the upgrade. If you send in your camera with the NIKON MOUNT or a third party mount approved by RED installed, you must also include your PL MOUNT in the shipment. We will put on the PL MOUNT, install i/pins, test i/pin functionality, then put the other mount back on. This will extend the processing time for your camera. Note that if a PL MOUNT is not included in the gear sent back to RED, the RED ONE will not be upgraded.

Given that there is an agreement between RED & Birger, and that I've notified RED of my installation (I was one of the ones that installed it prior to the agreement), I read the above to mean that I can send it in with the Birger and separate PL ...

Yikes! I forgot about that post... Here comes Jarred... (Footsteps coming down hallway, all eyes turn towards the door, and then......)

:)

Serious note: I don't think this post is relevent anymore.. A lot has happened since then

I emailed RED asking about that, and got this reply on January 27:

...please install the PL mount before shipping your camera. If your RED comes in with the Birger mount installed we will ship it back without the upgrades. ...

Not sure where things changed, but it sounds like it definitely has to have the PL mount installed for the upgrade.

I think the confusion here is that RED has Certified and therefore "approved" certain mounts like Doug Underdahl's Nikon mount, and Andy Lesniak's Canon mount (now Wicked Circuits).

Thats a different thing than the agreement in place for the Birger mount.
The Birger mount is not Certified by RED.
But they have agreed that if Eric approves the installers, and therefore takes the risk, RED will still honor the warranty and the Epic/Scarlet upgrade path for those that have it installed on their RED One.

Thats my read anyway.

Put your Pl mount back on to send it in for the audio upgrade program.

Fast wide angle with Canon

Fast wide angle with Canon

Is there a fast EF compatible/adaptable ultra wide to fill out the Canon fast primes set- 36mm f1.4L, 50mm 1.2L, 85mm 1.2 and the widest which is 24mm 1.4L. Is there a fast manual stills lens that could be mounted via adaptor to the Canon EF/Birger.
