Best monitoring solution for resolve?

I'm looking to add a new display and monitoring system so that I can monitor/correct my footage in resolve and also premiere pro/speedgrade

Whats the best way of doing this without breaking the bank ($1k - 1.5k$ max)

I'd need a DA converter and at least a 2k monitor with good color, any suggestions ?

Ask Jeff Kilgroe after NAB

Unfortunately, there's nothing that you can buy off the shelf that will fall within your budget. The only thing I can suggest is buying a used CRT w/ an HD-SDI input card if you have the space.

I'd start with a Decklink mini monitor and then look into a used 17" JVC HD-SDI monitor.

Keep your eyes peeled on certain auction sites and the for sale section and you can find a good deal. FWIW, Flanders are the bomb diggidy. You are a little late to jump on their NAB special, but you could either wait until next year or stretch your budget and pick up the last BM230.

The Flanders 17" inch is one of the best indie monitors available. Its about 1K more than you'd like to spend, but its hard to argue with its value and performance. Its 10bit, which is hard to find even at higher price points...

Which is exactly why I NABbed one this time around... :emote_hanged:

The NAB B pricing deal is pretty cool. I'm in for one

The flanders look really good. Anyone know what the difference is between the 17" and the 21" ? that are listed at 1995 each ?

Also, what would be the best way to hook these up on a budget to take advantage of a 10bit image ? BMD desklink or similar ?

Re-read my above post, I can't make it any simpler.

And the difference is the 21" is an 8bit panel and the 17" is a 10bit panel. If you don't know what that means or want to be bothered to read up on it, then get the 8bit panel.

So . . . 21 + 8 = 29 and 17 + 10 = 27 . . . so the 21" is 2 better . . . right?

You can't do that at. Well, you can't do that very easily.
Resolve works with BMD card and SG uses AJA, although for some weird reason PPro can work with BMD.
I read reports, that it is possible to use both cards, but personally I wouldn't recommend.
So, long story short, make a choice, Resolve or SG. Personally, SG is a piece of ..., so the choice shouldn't be too difficult.

You can't add/subtract bits and inches, you have to put them into Bytes first. You'd use bits with millimeters.

Doug's suggestion is spot on. Within your budget, a HD CRT is your best bet - and still one of the best grading options, anyway!

I happen to have an incredibly good JVC HD-SDI monitor for sale, with incredibly low hours (!) at an incredible price point. Look here:

You can't beat (especially) the quality and the price.

Cheers!
