  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

April shipping update

Okay, so as I understand it now, once RED gets through pre-W swappers they will go by time stamp? So if I ordered a W on Dec. 10 and another ordered a RAVEN on Dec. 11th, but then switched to W a few days later, the person with the Dec.10 W order only wil receive the allocation prior to the RAVEN swapper after W?

Though, still doesn't explain that statement Jarred said!
too confusing…it's all by time stamp and accessory availability now, as the brent quote said.
so ravens and scarlet-w's will be allocated simultaneously by time stamp, though scarlets will be done sooner because there is a lot less.

Then your wait will be based on your spot in the queue, and the Scarlet/Raven switching has no affect for your spot. The switching thing only mattered for people who had Raven orders in already when Red annouced the Scarlet-W and decided to switch; they kept their place in line from their original preorder, they didn't bump anyone who'd ordered a Scarlet-W after the announcement.

I'm completely okay with it being fair by time stamp. I'm just confused at the moment. I bought a BRAIN only for RAVEN so I'm just waiting on a camera. I have all my accessories already.
i dont know your time stamp, but if it's early you will probably get yours before us packages have to wait until the 8th…which yeah, we were told march for packages back on sept 24th, so a few weeks late. it would be a let down if first night raven package orders arent filled by nab, that would be a month late.

the only weird thing is how we have to decipher whats up with ravens, seems to gear updates towards scarlet-w, when they are even saying there are many more ravens on order, so i would think they would be talking about those more and being more specific, it might because of a promise he is trying to keep.

I think RAVEN is still on track, though yeah packages are sort of uncontrollable circumstances. I know RAVENs are being allocated and due to the accessories, packages are always a bit a late. And like his previous comments on RAVEN, it will pick up production in April, they just need to fine tune their production line to make them. It's an entirely new line with a new cut of a sensor. So it will take them some time to get that rolling. I'd say in the next 2 weeks, things will be full steam ahead and allocations will pick up drastically.

So if someone preordered a Raven on January 1st and decided today to switch it to Scarlet-W. Do they queue up for the Scarlet-W with their January 1 timestamp? Because that certainly *does* bump back any Scarlet-W customers who preordered in January/Feb/March. Just seems silly to give all Raven owners the option to change their mind late and still get some sort of priority. What incentive does that give those of us who waited for a better, more expensive camera? It's not like these were all existing RED owners. A lot of them probably haven't given RED any money other than a $500 deposit (which is half of what we put down).

And theoretically, September Raven-switchers could still be rolling in, pushing Dec10 Scarlet-W orders like mine back even further? Unless there was a date cut-off for getting priority.

No 8k sensor update? I have a project that is hanging the wind that requires it and I've be hoping that March was going to be my month.

Already covered that with my last update. The next Batch of 8k sensors comes out of the oven next week which is still on track from my last March update. They take 2 weeks to go through the QC process so actual 8k cameras should roll out right around NAB time. Impossible to know how many.. as the 8k are the cream of the crop and very few come out alive. Could be 100 sensors, could be 1 sensor.

My best advice is don't plan your shoots around the 8K... they come in slowly, they go out slowly and are far and few in between. They are one little tiny notch on the dial before the impossible mark.

If there were not so many 8ks out shooting some really big things right now in Atlanta and Japan and London you could almost bet against them even existing.. Straddling the land of Unicorns and Mermaids. And along that vain of unbelievable things.. they are just as extraordinary.

Well here is the deal. If you ordered the RAVEN before the W, you carry your time stamp. RED has always honored original time stamps no matter what direction you go. So if I ordered a RAVEN on January 1, you ordered a W on January 2nd, and I changed my mind on March 1st to buy the W, my time stamp shows January 1st. That's fair and square in my book. Though, after they get through people who pre-ordered RAVEN before W and swapped, then it goes to a time stamp system. So it now all depends when your original purchase time stamp. RED allowing people to upgrade to the W is fair, because at the time of their purchase, the RED Scarlet-W wasn't announced. And those who bought RAVEN after W, then swapped will still get their original time stamp from where they ordered RAVEN.

Rarer than hens teeth, but worth the wait. Once you've had a taste though it sticks to you for a while.

Heh I may need a Unicorn to shoot 8K Olympic related things. A few people need tests done too. Very much looking forward to it.

Dont worry Phil... Your name is very close to the top of the 8k list. If this batch is good, you are going to have alot of new friends buying you drinks at NAB.

Let's not forget that this thread also proves that Jarred doesn't sleep.

ha ha I received a fitbit about a month ago. It tracks your sleep. That wasn't good.

I put it on my dog and luckily she sleeps 18 hours a day so it all balances out :)

Hey Jarred,

Any clarification on that 'After Scarlet-W announcement' RAVEN order to Scarlet W thing would be awesome :)
I'm assuming that after you take care of pre-W swappers, it will go to a strictly time stamp thing but I'm still confused on the AFTER part of your post. People who ordered the RAVEN after the Scarlet-W was announced but swapped over, up until end of week next week will get allocated a W before NAB?
Thanks man!

means if you have a Raven order in, and tomorrow you swapped to Scarlet-W, you probably will get your Scarlet-W before NAB, assuming the accessories are available that you order. The "up till next week" part is best case... if tomorrow a bazillion people read this news and jump from Raven to Scarlet-W to get their cameras sooner, then that line of course gets longer and extends out past NAB.

Jarred, what percentage of the previous batches were good?

sorry I just got a slap in the side of the head update... no way will it be till the end of next week, in the last 8 hours since I posted we had alot of movers to S-W.

But if you only bought a BRAIN.... ;)

on average.. I'd say we have moved up to maybe 10%. But sometimes its zero.. and you dont know till you turn them on. Best possible case would be 30% yield with a sensor this complex after years and years of tuning. That's why they are so expensive.

If we were making 1080p or even 3K sensors we probably would have a 80% yield... for reference I'd imagine an Alexa sensor costs less than 1/20th the price to make than an 8k dragon sensor from just that yield point alone. Keep that in mind next time you hear a company say that resolution doesn't matter :)
