  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will there be a Monstro sensor in S35mm size?
As an Weapon Magnesium owner and a low budget film maker I don't need an 80k VV camera but could make good use from Monstros S35 upgrade. Magnesium could perhaps have enough horse power to handle those 6k?

Don't think it's going to be a straight path for Weapon MG due to lack of IPP2 and brain hardware, but Monstro could indeed be what's inside new 6K and 5K cameras if RED goes that route. Likely paths for existing owners as always.

We'll have to wait and see what the plan is on that front.

One thing I will say is RED has been on the tick/tock cycle of body, sensor, body. DSMC2 is/was the new body. Helium AND Monstro are new sensor tech, which sort of breaks that pattern, but I think part of the same general plan. Makes me wonder what 2018 holds on both the sensor and camera body side of things.

If there is a new body. I hope they will, for once, hear to the sound guys.
Put there a real audio preamp (look at Sonosax if you want something worth it) with some balanced inputs and make those fans larger (look at Sony Venice cooling system of Panavision's DXL).

If it's like Helium cameras VS Magnesium cameras, I don't need the extra power for IPP2 preview in camera.

Right, but Monstro hardware, but just like Helium, Monstro likely needs the bigger hardware to drive it.

I haven't been having any real audio issues with DSMC2, but I think it's largely dependent on workflow and environment. We're finally getting more audio Modules/Expanders though.

We'll see what RED does on the fan front though. The DXL mainly needs those fans for the additional hardware found within.

Actually if we remember Jarred's Ranger posted forever ago, there's also some new airflow there, but for similar reasons to DXL.

Phil,

I thought Jarred , atleast in the "FDtimes" article, inferred that there wouldn't probably be a new body until 2020. You think they may surprise everyone with somehing new next year?

The sound module tells it all.
The dslr type audio input is crappy and not even good enough for a scratch track.
Buzz hum interferences... You got it all. The preamp are crappy. It's even a step back from Red One and Epic.
Put there a TA5 with the option of AES/48/mic/line and it will rock!
Sorry Phil I thought you where on the steering wheel! ;-)

+1 for a Monstro 6k.

I really love my Dragon 6k in a WeaponMG body. I would like to see a similar RED-cam with a Monstro-Sensor.

While I won't speak for Jarred, I don't have a short memory and I remember in discussion with him a long while back that DSMC2 bodies would be around until 2020 (and personally likely beyond).

As for what that means for future camera body releases or even new camera lines, I have no clue.

I'm not having any real issues with the REDVOLT Expander for direct XLR, but I will likely be getting Mark's new OMOD XLR2 Module which supports AES, +48V Phantom Power, etc.....

I actually sort of want to design an audio module at this point (it's been on the back burner since January in terms of things I want to work on) because there's one MEGA feature nobody is doing and I think it would a wonderful addition. Think I'll reach out to somebody next week. I know who needs to build it, it's just a matter of if they will and will they do it in a timely manner.

No offense to RED, Tilta, Mark or anyone at Vitec, but, IMHO, we have yet to see the expander module to rule them all. Somewhere between the currently shipping OMODs and the DXL, I believe there can be an under $10K, under 3 lbs (1.4 Kg) back end, that would be very popular. That includes the capacity to capture clean sound even when working single system. I believe, that with proper preamps, clean 48V phantom power and the ability to ride levels wirelessly - double system could be reserved for the obvious use cases, rather than expanding the production footprint in situations where it would be better to stay lean.

I would like to see Sound Devices put their MixPre 3, with added time code into a RED Module. As it is, it does everything- sound wise- Blair is asking from a proven high end sound company for $650.

...from a proven high end sound company for $650.

High End and 650$ is incompatible... But if it does the job then it's ok...
Highend for me are Sonosax for example where there are no compromises in their preamps.

So... Still curious about the S35 Monstro ;-)

Try a MixPre 3, within it's limitations it is a great, lightweight unit from an experienced high end sound company, backed by their sterling service. It is tiny, but solid. As an add on for a solo shooter it is very functional and has really good preamps. You can have a shotgun and two RF's on it's 3 channels and a time code in, and it outputs to a computer on USB, No doubt on the quality of Aaton or Sonosax or SD's more "pro" recorders, but they are larger, heavy and difficult to operate as a one man band.

If you are hinting SuperSlot, I have been trying to get Mark to incorporate since he initially announced OMOD's. Seems like ages ago.

High End and $ 650 is very compatible. Just have a look at the OPPO HA-2SE Portable Headphone Amplifier & DAC for only $ 299.
High price doesn't mean high quality, just use a couple of OPA1612's and good passive components and you can engineer a very high-end preamp.

Same counts for Power Amplifiers, just buy 2 Hypex NC400 for € 650 each and you have one of the best (double mono) amplifiers money can buy.

I think it's pretty clear that Monstro tech is a step forward from Dragon tech and not an additional tool in the toolbox like Helium is. It's clearly better in every way and with the exact same pixel pitch, it can fit the same functional roles as Dragon does.

I would not be surprised to see Dragon-based models being phased out for Monstro models in the upcoming years.

I would guess 3rd party H/W creators desiring the Brain to remain fixed for as long as possible to increase their return on R&D investments for DSMC2.

If Red can upgrade Sensors on the existing body and concrentrare on Rental business, with painless Sensor swaps & numerous 3rd party extensions - It would make both camps happy. :-)

If Monstro means ‘scalable’ to beyond VV - my guess would be DMSC3 would only be needed when Red release a Sensor that can’t fit in the current opening (eg to natively handle 70mm PV Lenses.)

Rampant Speculation : >2021?

And in the meantime (2019), Newer silicon processes could give Red the chance to up (eg Double) the ASIC horsepower of replacement boards in the same power envelope.

I'm not sure you get much out of a s35 or Dragon sized version of the Monstro. It works in conjunction with the 8K resolution.
