  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any plan for MONSTRO for S35 ?

Guess I'll never shoot with it below 8K? :) That's like saying you shouldn't shoot with Dragon or Helium below 8K or hell 6K or 5K.

The real question is "if RED will do it and when".

RED's already demonstrated that Monstro has a lower noise floor, more sensitivity, and more accurate color than Dragon at 100% resolution (which I'm real eager to test fully btw). So if they can make a 6K or 5K cut, it would make sense to fill out those camera lines "perhaps" down the line.

It might also be a bit weird to do with Helium being also good at 8K already in the S35 format size.

We'll have to wait and see.

For now, Monstro is going to show it's initial strength in 8K VV and of course the various other formats and resolutions you can shoot below 8K.

I personally think there is a market for 5K and/or 6K cuts for those who are focused on delivering 4K or lower, but that's just me.

At the moment however, my big interest in Monstro is it's apparent better image performance, integrated IPP2, and delivery 8K and 4K material.

I haven't been having any real audio issues with DSMC2, but I think it's largely dependent on workflow and environment. We're finally getting more audio Modules/Expanders though.

We'll see what RED does on the fan front though. The DXL mainly needs those fans for the additional hardware found within.

Actually if we remember Jarred's Ranger posted forever ago, there's also some new airflow there, but for similar reasons to DXL.

Like you I have no audio issue with my Epic-W with v lock, just dont put crap in front of it!

I calibrated at 46c. (I didn't dare to hit max 48c)
But there are still fans buzzing especially in that hot bathroom or in this intimate scene where you are close to the actor.

I've been told that good audio preamps are base on good electronic components. You can take a lot of short cuts that makes the job and lower the price but they also lower the quality. Now if the standard is wireless sound and cheaper preamp quality, I won't argue about preamp quality.

Of course, I'm just saying that as an upgrade for current 6K owners like myself, an upgrade to my Weapon MG by switching from Dragon to Monstro at the same 6K size doesn't seem like a great investment if a speculated price-tag would be around 10K for such a sensor switch. The differences between the sensors at the same size doesn't really justify it compared to upgrading from 6K to 8K. It all depends on the budget people have of course, but all the upgrades I've done so far has been in terms of how much of an improvement they give to my images. I've gone from Scarlet-X, to Epic-X, Epic Dragon and now Weapon 6K MG. Through all of them, there's been a really big jump in either operation or image quality or both.

So, the real deal would be going VV Monstro (even though it's way above my price league). Helium in my opinion is a kind of sideways step, it's an alternative, performs better in low light, but colors look perceivably the same and you loose things like 82 fps at full sensor size compared to the cropped sensor for the same performance on Helium. It seems everyone in the industry is going for larger sensors and VV Monstro is in my opinion the true way forward for Red. However, my feeling is that the prices increase more and more for each upgrade Red puts out. The gap is pretty huge for us more independent filmmakers to be able to reach Monstro levels. It's not a complaint really, but it's frustrating not being able to continue riding on the train.
 
The good thing with VistaVision trend is that the need for S35mm glass is going down (a bit) and the S35 glass could reach a normal price level again.

The step from Epic Dragon to Weapon Dragon was, picture wise, very small (1/2 stop?)
So if the next step Weapon Monstro S35 6k gives you only 2/3 stops cleaner picture than W Dragon (in an 15 stops picture) the upgrade is difficult to make if it's more than let say 9'000.--
 
Something to remember with the DSMC2 body design is that the body design itself is modular. For example the RANGER pieces fit in and around the existing DSMC2 body—whereas the body becomes the core of the system.

So, when things changed from DSMC to DSMC2 all the modules folks already had for DSMC cameras were not compatible with the newer DSMC2... however we might get a lot longer run in compatibility with the DSMC2 body if it remains the core element and addon to the body design are in the same realm as the RANGER or other things we have yet to see.

I'd rather the 6K Monstro, for numerous reasons...improved Dragon sounds GREAT to me....less data, less crop on slowmo, improved rolling shutter, etc...
 
I would love to have a Epic-W with a 8k VV monstro sensor at the same frame rates as the Epic-W with helium. That would for sure be worth a 10K upgrade for me. I'm hoping that a year from now the sensors swap is available for epic-W as well.

Have a look at the ABT speedbooster it's a lot cheaper and gives you almost an extra stop of light.
