  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing WEAPON DRAGON 6k Magnesium

Hold up there... thanks for appreciating the Carbon Dragon but that is a pretty horrible misstatement you just made.

Carbon Dragon has been out for almost 2 years now.... I did not release it just 6 months old like you are stating...

Really? Available to the public? I thought my order went in 4 weeks after it went live on red.com I know you've sported one for a while before, but it was not a production model? My mistake. I only meant to say it's a shame these works of art will disappear.

I'm really curious to see what we can get compared to Epic Dragon from the extra color bit depth, variable OLPF and of course low light. Jarred, are you guys going to post a 4K video showcasing this features? Can we get a couple of Weapon Dragon "Stills" too?

Yup.. I showed the prototypes in mid 2013 and they were shipping to normal customers in October 2013...

Congratulations on a fantastic release. Lots of improvements there. I really appreciate all the "smaller" things like lower fan noise, almost no black shading and built in speakers. Great job.
Cheers
Next time I hope to be there. :)

Maybe future firmware can add some fps. Weapon has more power than Epic. If can record 6K RAW and 2K ProRes simultaneously on the one media there has to be much more power. So It's really strange that Weapon doesn't have more fps. Because as you say 300 fps in Full 5K would really be a game changer. I hoped for the same fps bump as with RED ONE to EPIC. But let's see what the future holds :001_cool:

FPS is limited by both the sensor and the processing... not just the processing. Weapon uses the same 6K Dragon sensor that is the bottleneck.

Making a sensor with High FPS has a Sensitivity ( Dynamic ) range penalty that is just too large right now. You see it with the Phantoms which sit around 10 stops of dynamic range.

The fog lifts from my brain . . .

Any new Redvolt chemistry on the horizon?

Thanks for the response. So I wouldn't be able to use my credit towards a new side handle anyway, or a V-Lock or AB module for that matter...

Having to switch to XL's could make it just that much harder of a pill to swallow... Really hoping we don't get a (several month) period of Macgyver'ed power solutions before the fancy new stuff comes out.

Element Technica is making V-lock/AB modules for Weapon, as well as likely a few other companies. I've seen the prototypes, they are pretty awesome. They were not ready to show @ NAB yet though.

Another key piece of the puzzle

Ok. Thank you Jarred for the clarification.

Jarred will these be able to be purchased with the $5000 Red accessory credit as Element Technica is Red owned? Also what is the info with the 1.8 to mini mag upgrade deal?

Nope ET is run as a separate company with separate invoicing and separate customers so you can't buy their stuff with our credit or vice versa.

Jarred I have a quick question. Would we be able to spend our 5k credit to buy ANY item from the RED store ?

I am a little confused why RED thought people who had to stretch financial to afford Scarlet Dragon at $9500 would suddenly have another $30,000+ burning a hole in their pocket. "Can't afford an Accord LS? Well stretch for it and then you can get a great deal on this Ferrari California."

Well said!

I wanted to add my thoughts on this after spending the last 24 hours in my own head and reading all of the posts on here.
Its a catch 22 this place, I have made up my mind then I came on here and started second guessing my self.

Please bare in mind everything I am about to say is relevant for me and my business, everyone is different and everyone is owning/renting these cameras for different reasons.

I came into this whole thing buying a second hand Epic MX, I took a loan the camera paid its own way back in less than a year and then I took out another loan to pay for my dragon upgrade, that upgrade has paid itself off in less than 5 months.
Now weapon comes along, I have a 5 month old sensor in a battered old Epic, I get the upgrade and I essentially have a 5 month old sensor and a brand new body, I have re invested into my camera in my opinon as much as its de vaulation, bringing me back up to a platform where it can make me money and devaluate from a higher point.

If after the 90month grace period I am done, I can sell it on, it will have made equivalent to the 3 month de valuation already. (as long as I dont have a terrible 3 months) While I get that people are resistant because its a lot of money, I think that the value is sometimes more than just the specs, you have to look at every angle of your business, the money the camera has made itself and you, its depreciation and where you are looking to take your business.

You are also taking another step along the ladder to when you can afford to go to the top, I have opted for the magneisum weapon, if I now work with that in mind that 8K is the future, I can save for that and make the upgrade when I can afford it, I wasnt ready to make that decision yesterday, but this is the only camera platform where I can still move on the ladder and still make that decision in the future. If I bow out now - I would have to then raise 60K or whatever to buy back in.

I think some of it has to do that I am grateful to the system as without it I don't think I would be doing what I do right now, I hope I am right in trusting Jared and the guys and believing that they know what there doing and where they are going.

The prices of the upgrades are a lot and I do think this is also accredited to that weapon is a desired item as well as a tool, but in my head this is making sense with the current accessories credit etc. I don't know if its the lack of sleep, but im in and I for one am excited to get my weapon.

The only thing I am really hoping is that the bundle is just a suggestion and that we can change some of the accessories for ones we need, I for one will have no use for the XL module and will be getting a V mount from ET when ready.

I actually doubt they will use your old sensor in your new camera. I am betting they will put a new sensor in considering they are going to give a 1 year warranty. Plus, it would cost a ton of time and money to put up a new disassembly line to take the sensor out of the old body and put it in the new. I figure they would be better off just reselling the old Dragons as used.
