  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing WEAPON DRAGON 6k Magnesium

Hey Jarred - put this is the other thread but makes sense to move it into here. Can you shed any light on the sending in your PL Mount etc. Would we have to purchase a new Magnesium PL Mount? I have two - a TiTANIUM PL-Mount which I use for hires and my AL Canon Mount which I use myself. Will these both work okay on the new Weapon? If I send the PL in with the Dragon (as stated on the website) does that mean I have to purchase a new one or do I get it back when the Weapon gets shipped to me?

Thanks again for all your clarification! Much appreciated :)

Steve

Again Jarred, this is amazing, AMAZING. And thank you for the continual support for us, making the upgrade path a lot easier and cost effective.

When I look at this "deal" its amazing what you're offering:
- A upgradable camera to CF Weapon and 8K
- The amount of accessories that come with the weapon for the Upgrade (The XL Module, the SideKick, The Base Expander, The Lemo Adpator A...)
- The $5000 accessory credit, that can be used on media!
- The discount offer on moving your from 1.8" SSD to MiniMags 512GB

Thank you!!!

I think the Accessory Credit is confusing with the wording on the website:
Place your WEAPON™ pre-order by Thursday, April 16th—and pay the full deposit amount within 10 business days—to receive a $5,000 accessory credit to go along with your new WEAPON system.

I think this is where the confusion has come in as I think people are reading this as they've got to pre-order and pay within 10-days - and because its on the Upgrade Package page. If it was on just the Weapon (New) order page - it makes sense! ;)

On a quick other note, the upgrade notes state that you have to send your PL-Mount in with the camera and SSD Module - which is cool :)

Is there a reason for the PL Mount to be sent? Is it just getting evaluated or would we have to re-purchase the PL Magnesium Mount?

Thanks again Dude!!!! Awesome News!!!!!

EDIT: Phil do you want to take some of these points and the PL question onto there or shall I delete this post and move it to the NAB2015 Thread? Steve

Weapon is at the highest end of the Dragon family remember.

Sure, it's the top tier. Just curious if there's any sort of unknown (to us) benefit to the materials Red chose vs. the aluminum used on the Epic/Scarlet, that eliminated aluminum from being an option.

This makes everything so clear. Along with this.

Yes I am... sorry had to be in the booth today... ready to answer away :)

And yes.... All Dragons will be able to advance to the next round.

Every Dragon will be compatible with the future of RED, whatever that may be. This makes me very happy. I hope this makes everyone happy too; it's the best outcome for all.

I could say thank you for days, but I won't be that guy. Just know you're awesome.

Did you order the 8k upgrade as well? the 8k PL mount has a bigger port hole in it :)

Yup - agreed...I think this may be the biggest news of the night (besides 8K, Weapon, and Scarlet D to Epic D upgrade)....that all Dragon cameras are eligible for NEXT SENSOR.

Very cool.

Nope not going CF and 8K yet - would just be the Weapon 6K Magnesium at the moment...

EDIT: Ah, I think I am getting this now. You have to sent in the Brain and Side SSD Module and... if you are upgrading to CF 8K, then you'll have to send your PL Mount in which will get replaced with the new one, but don't have to send in if your just upgrading to the Magnesium Weapon. Hence the comment about 8K Mount has a bigger port hole! That also explains why there is no mount in the Weapon Magnesium package.

If I've got this correct - then we good man!!! Thx.

PS - If I'm wrong, I'm sure you'll correct me - hehehehehehe ;)

Just to be clear -- will people be able to go from Scarlet-Dragon to Scarlet-8k Vista Vision?

There is no Scarlet 8K Vista Vision. But there is an upgrade path to get from Scarlet Dragon to Weapon Dragon 8K VV, yes.

After reading all previous 43 pages of this forum this is my conclusion….The weapon specs are low, the prices are high…surely not a winning combination…
however happy to have upgraded from mx to dragon last week…I feel our dragon epic can go a really long way…
if they offered 300 fps in 5k in the weapon - now that would be a game changer that would set them far ahead of everyone else including arri...was I the only one hoping for higher fps in the weapon?…that would definitely justify the huge price difference…pro res in 2k
is definitely nothing to drool over!

Carbon is not just casing this time. It has faster chips in it, just like the Epic has faster chips than the Scarlet.

That is why the Weapon Carbon can do 33x33x33 3D Luts vs the Weapon MG 17x17x17 3D luts, The Carbon can do 120fps PROres instead of Weapon MG 60fps PROres, and yes, Carbon can do 8k instead of the MG 6K.

Jarred, question from a current Carbon Owner. I want to get an 8K CF version., and part of buying the CF dragon was to get priority knowing that 8k was on your road map. However I bought mine 6 months ago, and the trade in is less then half the cost. it's way more attractive to upgrade a dragon M and keep my Carbon. Let's face it, these carbon dragons are a work of art. I really want to keep it, but I want the priority of being a CF owner. It bring tears to my eyes at the thought of it being scrapped after six months. The fact you released this 6-8 months ago at a premium based on a body style you knew would change seems crazy. Because we helped push manufacturing his way for weapon, can you offer us the chance to upgrade another of our dragons instead and allow us to actually continue using this work of art.

*** jarred has pointed out that I was incorrect and that CF dragons before I stated. I do live in Africa a good part of the time

I'm really one of the few who can actually use 8k now.

Hold up there... thanks for appreciating the Carbon Dragon but that is a pretty horrible misstatement you just made.

Carbon Dragon has been out for almost 2 years now.... I did not release it just 6 months old like you are stating...

Congrats Jarred on the Weapon launch. Glad to see you at the best Jim's tradition.

Proud to have been witness of such a glorious startup almost 10 years ago now.

Greetings from old Europe,

Emanuel :-)

Thanks man.. much appreciated.

I signed up but there's a couple things that made me have to think hard about it:

-We are getting a couple things that I probably wouldn't invest in (right away), like the XL Module and the top handle. Probably would have held off a bit on the sidekick and gone with the new side handle (still excited to see that), at least a new Dual Outrigger (heh heh?). With the addition of the $5000 NAB credit you basically get $10,000 worth of free accessories, which is crazy awesome actually, but I wish I could choose how I distribute that

-Only having until Thursday to come up with an extra $10,000 for the Carbon 8K. I was *this* close to going that route but I can't make such a commitment so quickly.

And a couple questions:
-The Lemo Adapters - could they have NATO rails at the top or pass thru the connectors for the top handle?
-Will there be a cable-free EVF that'll be reminiscent of this: http://www.red.com/store/products/tactical-evf-mount?

I understand "Fulfillment will be based on the camera type you are trading in" as stated on Phil's summary, but is there any priority being given CF orders over Mg? I think I remember Carbon Dragons being prioritized in the past, regardless of upgrade, so I'm just curious if the same is true here. Or will they be pumped out at the same time?

Thanks Phil, for the run down and Jarred, for answering questions after what I'm sure was a long day.

I can't complain about the 5K credit, stoked on it but I feel the same regarding the bundle, I wish I could exchange some items for other ones most useful with the batteries and accessories I already own.

Hey Alex, You can still order the Carbon 8K sensor upgrade after NAB, the cost is just higher.

Element Technical has a new side handle coming ( doesn't have a battery in it to power the camera but is really cool ) but it was not ready to show @ NAB.

Yes there will be a cable free EVF. We have a few prototypes at NAB if you are here you can take a look at.

Maybe future firmware can add some fps. Weapon has more power than Epic. If can record 6K RAW and 2K ProRes simultaneously on the one media there has to be much more power. So It's really strange that Weapon doesn't have more fps. Because as you say 300 fps in Full 5K would really be a game changer. I hoped for the same fps bump as with RED ONE to EPIC. But let's see what the future holds :001_cool:
