  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing Scarlet-W

Remember the poor ARRI users are still mostly only shooting HD PRORES.
So 5k RAW and PRORES is miles ahead.

EPIC DRAGON for me is still the work horse as I explained, only because I don't need PRORES.

I'll probably skip the 6k Weapon, It's to close to what i have already. The 8K Weapon is next camera, but probably only get one at first and see how the file sizes work in my post world.

Im still really impressed with this new Scarlet W though.

I guess I respectfully disagree. I think the new DSMC2 form factor is a big deal, and will have a major impact on imagery. And with the $9k upgrade cost to Magnesium that was available, the upgrade was a no brainer.

But as for improvements, I think these are significant (because though the sensor is the same, the boards processing it ARE NEW):

1) Better noise floor. Shooting clean at 4000iso looks suddenly possible!

2) Better DR. Phil believes there may be 1.5 extra stops.

3) Auto-Blackshade (saves time, and contributes to cleaner signal).

4) Lower compression (for Carbon). LOSSLESS 6k is now possible (3:1).

5) Lower compression on high-speed also (a big deal for those who need this)

6) Better color.

7) Better smear.

8) Built in Prores (and down the road, hopefully DNX).

9) Built in Wifi.

10) Better ergonomics.

11) Lower weight (3.5lbs!!).

12) Upgradeable to 8K.

13) Ready for next sensor

14) 8K Carbon can do 4:3 6K Anamorphic.

15) More 3rd Party Solutions being integrated into design (OMODS, etc).

1) Better noise floor. Shooting clean at 4000iso looks suddenly possible! Yeah ?... My time with didnt see this.. ? can you send me your 4000ISO R3D.

2) Better DR. Phil believes there may be 1.5 extra stops. Thats awesome ! , Again I didnt a that much of an increase, But Phil's word is good.

3) Auto-Blackshade (saves time, and contributes to cleaner signal). Yes, great.

4) Lower compression (for Carbon). LOSSLESS 6k is now possible (3:1). I've not shot more than 8:1 as yet for any job.

5) Lower compression on high-speed also (a big deal for those who need this) I can't visually tell the difference unless Im at 400% pulling keys. But thats still a +

6) Better color. We did a side by side, couldn't tell. But Im sure there is.

7) Better smear. What's smear?

8) Built in Prores (and down the road, hopefully DNX). Yes, great.

9) Built in Wifi. Yes, great. but dont need it.

10) Better ergonomics. Debatable.

11) Lower weight (3.5lbs!!). Yes, great.

12) Upgradeable to 8K. great.

13) Ready for next sensor When is that happening

14) 8K Carbon can do 4:3 6K Anamorphic. great. But we are talking about the 6k Weapon no?

15) More 3rd Party Solutions being integrated into design (OMODS, etc). great.

Hey Nick, I'm not beating on it, Its a fricken awesome camera. I'm personally not rushing into it is all, I'm just wanting to get more life out of my EPICs, ony because they are far from obsolete as yet. The 3 of them still look like new... Like I siad, they give me currently more than I need.

I will head over to Weapon probably next year. Only because I feel i have too. (peer pressure) But I dont need too... Just waiting to see what the boys do with the side handle.

Yes, speaking of the new compatible side handle, as a few people have mentioned it in the thread. Has there been any updates or timelines given for it? Does Red have one under development or is it just ET?

2) Better DR. Phil believes there may be 1.5 extra stops.

I love how Phil is such a well known and fabulous resource that he is known around these parts by only one name. He is sorta like Adel, or Cher. Kinda. Better.

improvements

The Dynamic Range is a tricky thing as it's rather "amoebic" depending on your tolerance and what you rate your ISO at. The improvements made to the Dragon sensor, optical path, processing power, and likely voodoo allow the camera to see and capture a lot.

RED's statement of 16.5+ stops of Total Captured Dynamic Range is pretty safe if we are talking a "Base ISO" of 800. It's actually more like 17-17.2 measured stops at ISO 800 of Total Captured Dynamic Range within REDlogFilm material given the curve. Those are my results. Full stops and half stops are easy to measure. Once you get to and below 1/4 stops it's trickier. 16.5+ sounds about right :)

The CMOS Smear Artifact is greatly reduced on DSMC2. Here's an image showing RED Epic Dragon and RED Weapon.

Another thing that stood out when comparing Epic Dragon to Weapon was this Highlight Roll-Off and Retention example. That is interesting and it seems there's been improvements for sure on those fronts.

These are slight and/or major improvements depending on how valuable these things are to you. For instance, some find the lower REDCODE RAW Compression Ratios a big, big deal. Some won't because they work differently. Though I'd say if you are shooting high speed it's very beneficial.

As for anamorphic and 8K, it is alluring that the 8K Weapon sensor can do 8K 6:5, which is actually taller than S35 even. We not only have full height anamorphic, but above 4K resolution in height which is exciting. Nothing else has that yet actually.

Just don't call me Sally :)

Yes... lots of improvements all around. I should probably make a new post to highlight the improvements as there are alot of them.

The way I see it, there are no losers here. People like to complain about how their particular camera has been devalued by this, that or the other RED offering. But, IMO, RED seems to do a very good job of drawing the line right down the middle; benefiting RED owners substantially while still assuring a viable business model for themselves. NEVER have I seen a company that consistently treats its customers so fairly.

I'll admit to the dilemma of indecision but all in a good way. I could keep my Scarlet Dragon for awhile and shoot the hell out of it quite happily. Or, I can add a Scarlet-W and sell the Scarlet-D (or keep it!). I have even thought about the whole Epic Dragon route (sell Scarlet, buy Epic) for awhile which looks awfully tempting as well - that's a terrific camera! Heck, given that we have time to mull things over, maybe the leap to a Weapon Mg could still be a possibility. And all of them deliver beautiful images. And, the financial balance to go in any direction is pretty reasonable.

For those who are worrying abut the "devaluation" of their investment, stop looking backward and look to the future instead. As people around here are fond of saying. "Shut up and shoot the [insert camera name here."

I guess these improvements are general to the weapon cameras, but if there is anything specific to the MG and CF, because of better processing, I'd like to know.

Congratulations RED. Progress must inexorably move forward. That said, why does it feel like Epic Dragon owners are getting the short end of the stick on all the W dev?

Thank you,

WOW. And Scarlet Dragon owners get to KEEP THEIR SCARLETS?

Amazing!!!!

Am I the only one that thinks the power button and front RED badge of Monochromes should be black/white... Quicker to recognize a visible distinction.

this might be the most important thing in my book

Agree, I find it odd that people don´t see it. Some people fancy other brands or "sensor looks" and so on. But when making the list weapon, raven and scarlet weapon got so many boxes ticked that other brands simply dont have. I find it funny that people tend to look away from what you guys are offering. Then also as Toia says, it´s not like the epic dragon is outdated, or even scarlet MX they are all as I see it top notch tools that hit harder than pretty much all competitors latest and greatest cameras on most points on the list.

Just looking at it from front to back.. swappable mounts, swappable olpf, sensor resolution, sensor sensitivity, hardware and software cabability compressed raw r3d, HDRx, prores, Prerecord, frame summing, speed ramping frame triggering, frame rates, sensor cropping possibilities, available compressions rates, electronic mounts for EF and nikon with full lens control, 1Tb minimags, tedthered recording, tedthered proxy recording, Luts in camera, touchscreens.... well and some other shit like lens control system recording lens motor moments, freaking ipad foolcoontrol and 3rd party stuff, etc, etc.

Then having the price range from raven to 8k weapon and all the accessories that fits across the full range is unparalleled.

not to mention the amount of used gear that floats around for these cameras.

Thanks Raphael.

I'd like a moment to thank Brent for letting me not wait till NAB to release the Scarlet-W . That dumped alot of extra work on him and the rest of the RED soldiers to get this ready before christmas. But it just seemed like the right time to do.

From a customer perspective, I just thought it would of been a bit of a dick move to release Scarlet-W just after we caught up delivering Raven and the rest of the Weapon orders, and customers wishing they could of had this choice ahead of time. Of course that is the opposite of how businesses are supposed to release products to their customers.... but fuck it. Knowledge is power and you are all family. Even you cranky ones that complain all the time about everything.

So thanks Brent. I know I push too hard sometimes. And no matter how hard I push, you just never let me (or our customers) down. I couldn't do this without you.

O boy.. Love is in the air. I should probably go write some christmas cards before it passes :)

Man this is unfuckingreal, you were perfectly right.
The way that You, Mad J and your army do BUSINESS is the only way I imagine that makes sense nowadays.
You guys are recreating the Fckng way. Its so plain and simple that is disruptive itself.

And with that post, I release all the troops still here at work with me.

I have been working with Jim for now almost 15 years between the O and RED. At RED working with you for almost 9 years. You two, from day one, as shooters yourselves, always said to put the customer first. So, I guess it rubbed off finally, haha.

And, to get all St Nick on your ass: "And to all a good night!"

Hahahhaha Great!!! Nice work my friend. Always ahead!!
Cheers from Brazil

Heh heh not to blow smoke up your ass, but apart from being The go-to technical guy, The camera whisperer guy , The lens guy, The guy who's charts are on the walls of almost every studio and rental house , The guy who is a tremendous asset to this community in which you pour countless of hours into, but you also a guy that shoots some incredible stuff. And your best stuff you can't even tell anyone that you shot! Bah.

Me too ;) Jarred you forgot the drawings on FB hehehhehe
This Craazy man is on fire.
Thanks for effort for the Community Phil.
Apreciated aversea.

Capturing images with HDRx or High Dynamic Range output (like HDR-2084 of our REDCAST module)?

hahahhahahha you teasing machine

Heh. Probably time that I join the union then :) Been a ghost for too long and even working on those gigs. Weird career path for sure.

Thank you for those kind words. Very humbling.
