  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing Scarlet-W

Not as long as the new transfer of ownership takes place after the Scarlet-W ships. from what i took from it

I guess that's deal you'd have to make with a willing buyer. If I were buying it, I am not sure I'd be willing too be "in limbo" for that period - unless there was a financial incentive (and protections) of course.

OK... so the bad news is we just cant give you 50fps for free... but the good news is that we can squeak out 50fps at the expense of one tick of compression, so 50FPS @9:1

Hopefully that gets you close enough to what you need... will update all the specs accordingly.

And right there you just sold another 100 or so Scarlet-W in Europe. :)

Does ProRes "up to 2K" mean that it is possible to record at lower resolutions like 1920x1080 as well?

Thats great news. Thanks for the incredible fast reaction. PAL-world will love it. :)

Logged in and I can't get the upgrade package deal by being an Epic Dragon owner. I'd much rather do this upgrade path and keep my Epic Dragon than the Weapon Dragon. Can you guys make this possible?

Given that the deal for Scarlet owners is like 2500 off the package price. I would say you cn actually sort of have your choice. Pay 12K for the MG upgrade, or 30K for the CF -- or don't upgrade the dragon and just buy the Scarlet W for 9950 or 14.5K pkg. Seems like amounts to same concept. Depends if you want the bigger chip and 6K etc...

Still doesn't seem like a fair shake to the Epic Dragon owners. If you go Weapon Dragon you lose your current body and your old sensor is reused for the MG or the CF, both very expensive and you're left with one camera.

The Scarlet Dragon owners however keep their body and their current 6K sensor, pay 12K get a new body and a new 5K Dragon sensor. Giving them 2 bodies. Pretty awesome deal for them on Red's part.

I'm just saying, as a Epic Dragon owner, it's the least enticing upgrade path. It'd be nice to see options for Epic Dragon owners on the Scarlet-W path to get a similar deal. I'd pay 12.5K in a second for a Scarlet-W Upgrade Package and keep my current Epic Dragon.

Amazing spec. yeah .. I paid $27,500 for my Epic Dragon less than 12 months ago and now for $9,950 you can get very close to the same spec.
$17,500 depreciation for me to handle as a small independent filmmaker, how is that Obsolescence Obsolete?

Ken

i guess its really hard to please everyone, what i presume is this all came about to help the poor scarlet dragon owners that have been invested since the original scarlet, paid for upgrades and then the raven almost put them a step back, so this was all to help them out. which doesnt effect me but i appreciate red as a company not leaving them out to dry and im also assuming the people that bought the low end red scarlet are much more indie guys that cant afford an epic. im all for helping them out. for the epic dragon owners im sure they are at the top of what they can do for you but offer the upgrade to weapon, or just keep using your perfectly ca[able camera. its too bad that helping them out makes it look like now you have a bad deal, but just look at it like if there was no scarlet-w, then youd still be happy with your epic dragon as you were and still should be. i wish i had one!

Yes you are being disruptive and I'm loving it. Well done.

As far as I'm concerned. The Scarlet Weapon is officially the best bang for buck camera in the RED fleet.

I'm one of those working Pros that is in a lucky position to be able to purchase what ever cameras I want.
I'm also one of those guys that has a very pragmatic yet logical view and I don't dick around wasting money on cameras either. ( I've been through that silly phaze of my life )

The main 5 things I keep in mind when purchasing cameras. ( and lenses for that matter )

Weight + size + performance + workflow + price.

Yes I'l buy a 8k Dragon when the time comes. Because I can. Even though it's like having and elephant gun when your actually shooting rabbits most days.

I'm still not sure about the 6k Weapon as it doesn't tick one of those 5 criteria for me. ( price vs performance ) and its a lot of money for people just to have prores as and extra option over the current 6k Dragon. Which is still the industry work horse. I'll be running mine for many more years. As I don't need Prores, and if do I just transcode color corrected versions during the shoot or while I sleep anyways. Not a problem.

But the Scarlet Weapon ticks all those points. I would not hesitate for one moment in using ( or purchasing ) these new cameras for 99% of my tvad and future feature productions.
I could have 2 of these cameras forcthe price of 1 Dragon , 4 instead of 2, 8 instead of 4. You get my drift.
The price / performance equation is to good to ignore.

I shoot 5k a lot as a lot of our big PL glass we use in the Shotover and in our tracking vehical Russian arm hot head setups doesn't cover 6k perfectly. So 5k is sort of the sweet spot. Especially knowing that most of our mastered content is still HD so it's way more than we need. And you still have 5k to reduce if mastering 4K.

If I was an entry level RED user proffesional. I'd put the Scarlet weapon way ahead of the 6k Dragon / Weapon any day.
Dragon 6k Weapon needs to drop by 10k to match Scarlets 5 star rating.

That said.
I congratulate RED for always considering the entry level market. Because what they have really done is create a new market that I before never considered would happen. That's a market for guys like me looking at these new Scarlets as real weapons of choice for our higher end work. Especially for projects were you need more cameras on set and in more dangerous situations. Expendable power !

The Scarlet Weapon is on point. Well done RED, another awesome product.

$9.950 ???? for an EPIC DRAGON !!!
I'll take it off your hands ! Fuck, do you know what your talking about. The EPIC DRAGON is still and will be for quite a few years yet the work horse of the film and tv industry ! I shoot all around the world and I not many people I know are about to drop the EPIC to swap out for the Weapon. Not when they are so similar in spec except for PRORES. EPIC DRAGONS are still awesome as they are.

The EPIC DRAGON is still the one of the best in the range. Don't forget that ! Why would you even consider selling it? Keep working that 6k Dragon and don't look back. It will still be awesome for a few years yet. Don't you worry about that. RED made them to last and they still shoot far more than most people need. Including myself.

Remember these new WEAPON cameras only real extra is that they shoot PRO RES as well. Don't ever think you have been ripped off with your EPIC.
The 8k I will purchase when they become main stream, because that camera is a true advancement of sensor tech and awesomeness. But I wont be buying it because it does PRORES.

Calm people calm.

Yes. Currently 2K FF 2048x1080 ( DCI 1.9:1) and 2k HD 1920x1080 (1.78:1) aspect ratios are supported via ProRes Recording. On Weapon CF you have 2K and 4K.

I agree Mark. The price/performance ratio is spot on for Scarlet-W.

I think overall when you look at the DSMC2 camera lineup you see an exponential scale when it comes to features, performance, and price. Similar to pricing on motion picture lenses.

Raven = $
Scarlet-W = $$
Weapon 6K MG = $$$
Weapon 6K CF/Forged = $$$$
Weapon 8K CF/Forged = $$$$$

In terms of business and current day rates I think Epic Dragon falls between Scarlet-W and Weapon 6K MG. Scarlet Dragon between Raven and Scarlet-W. You can still do considerably "more" in terms of frame rates and resolution on Epic Dragon versus Scarlet-W. Weapon should be the natural progression for most Epic Dragon owners, but perhaps not all. Depends on the individual and their needs.

For me it's interesting to see and think about productions shooting 5K and what the wants and needs are. If you are shooting 6K-5.5K Weapon and Epic Dragon are still what's needed.

Remember the poor ARRI users are still mostly only shooting HD PRORES.
So 5k RAW and PRORES is miles ahead.

EPIC DRAGON for me is still the work horse as I explained, only because I don't need PRORES.

I'll probably skip the 6k Weapon, It's to close to what i have already. The 8K Weapon is next camera, but probably only get one at first and see how the file sizes work in my post world.

Im still really impressed with this new Scarlet W though.

The most important thing for the Weapon line (except 8K for CF) I think is the fact that is the only way you can get the next sensor when that comes out!

If that's the rules, Then so be it. But I'm betting once the fire dies down and demand slows over time, you'll be able to purchase one off of the shelf.

I remember when EPIC DRAGON's were as rare as rocking horse shit. Now people are selling second hand bodies for a 9k.

well to be fair, I'm uprezzing 3.2k to 3.8k a lot now in addition to HD lol! but i grabbed the mini cuz red won't get back to me about weapon so screw it, lots of choice and diversity is a good thing

I totally agree that the EPIC Dragon will be viable for many years to come.
Image quality is exceptional. No need for ProRes. New sensor for Mg path - not on my radar yet.

So why make the investment in Weapon?
Future proof everything that goes around it.

I suspect that all of the new modules that will be offered by RED - and others as they join the party - will conform to the mating and footprint of Raven, Scarlet-W, Woven, Forged and Mg Weapons.
There just will not be the ROI for most manufacturers to develop new gear for what will become a fixed potential market versus a growing one.
Yes, I do realize that the OMOD will have a Dragon variant, but for how long?

The investment in "what goes around the camera" can be quite significant. With all the new announcements sharing the same form factor, and the new capabilities being introduced by third parties to work with Weapon, well, for me, it made the decision the only sensible path.

Otherwise, I would have been more than happy to shoot on that Dragon sensor for years to come.
That sensor is not obsolete, the body will be. Kinda of like me.

The scarlet w is great. I currently shoot on the epic mx with minimags so it's a no brainer for my next step up. Not being in full productions, the 5k is more than enough and the 4k gives me the slower speeds I'm looking for. Really excited about the options I have. Rather than going epic dragon, now I'll have two reds for a great price and 5k or the new dragon sensor!

I can live with that! Wow pretty solid specs. I can se my self getting one of those later. Hopefully the new ET sidehandles come out soon.

Phil, thanks for all the info and sharing. I made my Scarlet W reservation, and I am sure a lot of us here are very happy with this announcement.

RED Rocks! amazing how they keep pushing the bar with their customers. No company can match that! Merry Xmas to all!
