  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing Scarlet-W

Does the Scarlet-W max out at 48fps in 5K HD as well?

Really looking forward to this camera. I've been shooting RED for years but this will be my first purchase. And thanks for offering the early roll-out and easy switch from Raven pre-order to Scarlet-W. I can't wait to move past the limitations of my current setup (FS700/7Q) to a camera that offers high-quality, dependable color, dynamic range, resolutions and frame rates without the fuss of external recorders. Honestly this seems like the near-perfect camera for my work (a lot of which is run-and-gun documentary), especially with a motion mount. Thanks guys. Looking forward to joining the RED family!

Turner, first post, good stuff. You don't have to be in any rush. Jarred says all good things eventually come to an end, but you have some time on this one...
 
Sorry if it was asked before but I'm still wanting to know if Scarlet-W has HDR mode?

Hi Kemmalettin! Rest assured, the issue with the ET Battery Modules is being actively and aggressively investigated. So far it appears software related, so it's very likely a new FW build will fix it right up. We'll keep everyone posted.

I'm talking about the in camera HDRx mode in Epic Dragon I'm used to. Sorry if I'm a bit behind. Was that changed for Weapon too?
 
You can use the term "crop factor" if you want but that still begs the question of - compared to what? So, IMO, suggesting the crop factor is 1.6 for something close to or equal to S35 when discussing moving image cameras such as we deal with here, is confusing. It gets particularly funky when people start throwing that term around without at least stating the standard they are using.

Personally, I am not at all sure that it is that makes sense to use the standard of 35mm still cameras when discussing "crop factor" for RED cameras. But that's just my opinion.

Can you do a version where you have the Nk and then Nk HD? e.g. 8k, 8k HD, 6k, 6k HD, etc... Or maybe you have 8k, Quad UHD, 4k, UHD, etc... :) Really just trying to see the FOV of 7680x4320 vs. 8192x4320. I assume it is just a hair bigger than your 7.5k.

Crop factor made sense in terms of the fact that there were hundreds of millions of cameras and lenses sold for the the 35mm standard 36x24mm film frame size from the sixties through the nineties, used by pros and amateurs, so there was a common reference. (S35 cameras probably numbered in the tens of thousands of movie cameras and even there there were multiple frame sizes over the time period so nothing like the same common reference)

These days crop factor makes less and less sense since it has been fifteen years or so since people bought mainly "full frame" (36x24) cameras, so there is an entire generation that really doesn't have the old "frame" of reference. But let's not try to create a new S35 reference for crop factor - let's either use the old reference or give up the concept of crop factor entirely.

Thank you guys. Not married, have a girlfriend though. Don't sleep much. Make a living shooting and working with RED cameras + I like the REDuser community a lot. The whole picture is sort of important to me if that makes any sense. I try to contribute where and when I can.

Agree-ish. Before the DSLR explosion and crazy Full Frame, APS-C, and APS-H and the slight variations there were within those formats there were/are many film formats. My first run ins with the concept came up on productions mixing and matching motion picture film formats and wanting to "know". It is indeed relative to whatever your "hero" format is if a person or production is capturing mainly on a specific format size. It is relevant in the RED world as some production step down in format/resolution size for high speed. In fact this happens all the time. So if you're looking to mix and match for FOV and focal lengths it's good to know if you want to be on say an 18mm or a 25mm to match "whatever".

Heh. Sucked that the espresso machine was down though. I've learned a heck of a lot from you man. 8K HD width-wise "should" be 7.5K FF in width if I'm not mistaken, but I have another chart that will be more "specific" on certain things soon. Until then, this has what you are looking for:


 
Thanks for the chart Phil... seeing the 8k dimensions rekindles the desire to do stills again.
