  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing REDVOLT EXPANDER for Weapon

will get one with all each weapon we buy . I'm pretty sure this module will also improve the camera balance when going handheld .

the very best module for anything beyond super compact setups that's for sure...

but now you'll need to get a few of them in unobtainium carbon forged version to match your new camera(s) Sam :-)

Will you guys be making a new Broadcast Module for the Weapon, i know a lot of my clients would love to have 4K on set and might just get one.

Speaking of the broadcast module: Brian and the gang over at RSH gave me a terrific demo of the existing one for Epic. I would have placed my order that day, but with Weapon on the way I just didn't see myself amortizing a $7K broadcast module fast enough.

So what's the road map?
1) How soon can we expect a Weapon compatible broadcast module to be available?
2) Is there any chance we will eventually get a 4K HDMI output on one of the "standard" Weapon modules?

Cheers - #19

Dude the line/mic/+48 switches are so awesome. I've always hated having to mess with that stuff in the menus. THANK YOU!!!

And the audio block not only has the line/mic level switches now, it is actually removable so you can swap out with different audio connectors if that's your thing....

Sweet! So what's the choice of flavors of the connectors?

Can we order one with mini XLRs? I've still got my R-1 pigtails... loved the mini XLRs from R-1 days.

Mini-XLRs are the new standard. Except the new standard is gender reversed from what RED did on RED ONE. Audio IN is a TA3 3-pin mini XLR with PINS. Cable is female.

Like Sound Devices 688:

"The 688 has six high-bandwidth mic/line inputs on XLR connectors, each complete with phantom power, high-pass filter, analog input limiter and variable pan. Six additional line-level inputs on TA3 connectors offer flexibility for more complex productions."

So I guess someone will make a male to female component so the pigtails could be used... but that brings up another question. Does having extra things like a gender changer and multiple connections between XLR cables degrade sound a noticeable amount?

Gender-benders and multiple connections don't degrade sound per se, but they introduce possible failure points. They can fail intrinsically, in which case you just replace them. Or they can be part of a larger mechanical mishap, which can cause other things to fail that are much more expensive to fix. I'd rather have a lightweight cable going straight into a TA3 than to have a gender bender acting as a lever arm and trying to hold up a much heavier-duty full-scale XLR cable. Keep it simple and keep it clean.

Thanks Michael, hadn't considered that option.

Michael T. hit the nail right on the head.
I've lost count of the number of times I have seen a studio use an adapter as a temporary fix just to get through a production, only to have that adapter become a permanent fixture in the cables.
They keep moving from one forest fire to another, and nobody has time to make up the simple, elegant cable until that point of failure finally breaks.

4 pin power?

I thought RED was going to stick at 2 pin.

You get 2-pin LEMO aux power on whatever Weapon Battery Module you use with the REVOLT Expander. The logic for the 4-pin is that you can combine run/stop (trigger) and power on one connector - which ARRI has been doing for decades with the 3-pin Fischer connector. It's smart IMO.

That would be great if it start/stop worked over it, especially with Cabrio lenses. Does anyone make direct 4 pin to 2 pin cables without an adapter?
