  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All quiet on the (RED)western front ...

Great idea Jarred. I could see this becoming a way of gauging interest in future products as well... people willing to put money down for products they believe in.

Fully willing to do this.

I know in this new world of kickstarters and $500 3d printing machines many people have this weird impression that it is easy to make anything and everything without effort and expense. That's not a reality. Ask anyone that makes anything that needs custom electronics. Engineering time is valuable, and not unlimited. And making one thing from the list means we can't make another.

This reminds me a bit of the Optical Viewfinder. Alot of very vocal people said when we started that we could not sell a single camera without one. There were some persistent customers so we finally said sure, and asked for orders.... suddenly it was crickets.

We did this with LDS a few years ago. We asked rental houses and canvased some of our customers and they just said it wasn't important enough for the added expense. Everyone of course has an opinion and everyone thinks their opinion is always right, but if enough people put up their hands and we will proceed. Who knows... maybe times have changed. Now metadata is more important than it was back then. The Master Anamorphics are out now that are great. Whatever the case may be.. we can give it a go.

We can put a LDS mount up for preorder. It is likely going to be almost double the price of a normal mount because of anticipated volumes. If only a few of you order the price will stay that. If alot of you pre-order, then the price will come down. Just like the special order PV mount. Sound good?

Flexible as always. Sign of great leadership.

Yes...

Question, though (and this comes out of ignorance), it's not possible to have a combo i-/LDS mount?

If I have understood things right (which I may well have not...) the pinning on the two is identical, which lead me to believe that this was mostly a software solution (yup I know what you said about development cycles and engineering time...), and that it was (as you suggested) a firmware upgrade.

Anyway, if it is a software/hardware thing, is it possible to have both in one mount?

I just dont get it.Who wanted i support for pl mount? Its like 1 i supported lens against 10 lds.Red implemented that tech and everybody had buy it whether they have cooke lens or not.
If there were 1 tech to adopt LDS is no brainer. Not now it had to be 7-8 years ago
All im trying to say why 5000 people bought Ti PL mount ? Because there were no lds option.the thing i dont understand why lds pl is gonna cost me more than ti pl just because of Reds false choice in the beginning.

Btw make another poll for $5K integrated focus systems like they have in alexa mini.

Thanks Jarred im always happy in Red world because i know somebody is LISTENING.

Kemalettin,

maybe because of completely different relationships RED has with ARRI vs COOKE??

And the fact that RED Zooms had /i tech in the past? ;)

O.K., now it is my turn to ask a question out of ingnorance. What is the advantage of LDS? Does it help in some way in post, or does it just offer a way for the curious to say "So that's how you shot that scene... so cool!"

Let's make this a two part question... what lenses will LDS work on?

I believe the major advantage of LDS is that post VFX people have frame accurate metadata to use when making their VFX assets or compositions. Thus making it easier to match.

So, do they offer a discount for post work done on LDS footage?... (assuming one doesn't do one's own post work)

Sony F55 has both - Cooke at 12 o'clock and LDS at 3 o'clock position - so might be some difference - voltages maybe?

Virtually all VFX work is done at cost or negative margin so I doubt it.

The VFX business model is doing very poorly right now because of the race to the bottom. So, I don't know if this will change costs, but it does make VFX work more efficient. So at the very least, the final VFX product will more likely be better.

All the fuss is about efficiency. So low budget productions wouldn't really want to pay for that. But if you are paying for Master Anamorphics you probably do care enough about efficiency and then LDS becomes invaluable.

EVERYBODY already being paid for i/ data on every PL mount. Why not choose most commen lens info tech then?

I don't know if i/ is more or less common than LDS but if a production wants to shoot on Cooke then they need i/. If they want to shoot on Masters then they need LDS. Blame the lens companies before you blame RED for that.

I don't work for RED so I can't tell you exactly why they picked one vs the other to support, but it may or may not have to do with the fact that LDS is an ARRI product. Whatever the reason is, I'm sure RED made what they thought was the best business decision and it seems to have worked for them so far.

it worked so far because there were no other options. It would have worked same way if its dumb pl mount :)
Even sony could do both i/ and LDS why not add those for new camera line ?
