  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All quiet on the (RED)western front ...

I might get flamed a little (or even, a lot) but IMHO prior to RED, Arri gear was insanely expensive and entirely out of reach for all but the elite owner/operators. It was fairly much a rental market. RED built an Indie+Pro owner market riding the digital revolution wave that has made pro production aesthetics for a significantly broader base of owner/operators a reality. I do suspect there's a bit of reluctant heavy discounting going on there in recognition of the changed market conditions and customer base. If RED wasn't in the game that Arri Ti PL mount for a digital camera would probably be some $6-7k item that you hired from rental houses. It's $1500 because they realize the market, technology and customer base entirely shifted beneath their feet.
 
Well SXT isn't cheap and I think red did get them into the lower priced market but not on their luxury models. Weapon isn't reds usual price point either though
 
Is taking a deposit now, this something that RED would consider for to build LDS into their 8K mounts?

I would be interested - maybe RED could determine a People X Deposit that they would need to collect before work starts?

Expecting most ppl wanting this would be happy to vote with some deposit $ and collectively get a good indication of demand before committing R&D $$ etc... seems a win/win approach.

I asked this a while ago and, as I recall, Jarred gave some numbers, which were tier related and asked about interest level, which, i great enough would make the price point significantly lower. Just saying"

Maybe I should start an interest level thread?

The last response from Jarred indicated it would cost 2x as much as the current mount, you would be willing to pay $7k?

It was a promised feature for Epic, here we are dragon, and now weapon, still not delivered, time to move on.

I don't understand it, they say the software part is done, but for whatever reason Red's not interested in adding a few pins to the PL mount.

Take your $7k and buy or rent an ARRI UMC-4 lens controller.

For metadata, just route timecode and start/stop from the dragon/weapon to the UMC-4, has built in mappings for master primes, master anamorphics, etc. and if you want to use some random weirdo lens you can create a profile for it with the WCU-4 controller, you no longer need to use an alexa to create the profile. You can also do focus tracking with a cinetape or ARRI's UDM-1

You end up with a csv file on a sd card with timecode, your lens metrics and tilt/roll.
You would have to export a csv from your r3d using redline anyway, so its not that much different.

If the goal is to provide live lens data to a director or vfx supervisor, the UMC-4 has a an ethernet port, you can use a wifi bridge and connect to the umc-4 via a vnc client on an android tablet, etc.
Yes, its a hack and a cable mess, and not as nice as seeing Lens data embedded in the video feed, but there is a work around.

The UMC-4/WCU-4 is a pretty awesome and reliable setup, its just expensive and a hard sell when the ACs are use to grandpa's Preston and said never again after using the fancy but unreliable c-motions.

The PL mount was re-designed for Weapon, that was the time to add LDS support.

Black Magic will probably add LDS before Red at this point, Sony, Pansonic, Arri all support it now.

7000$*for a PL mount? Even current MG PL mount is crazy expensive $3,500.I just want to hear logical explanation how PL mount costs this much? Arri makes LDS mount from 1500$ (Titanium) and they are making this mount for less than 1000 qty.Red making MG PL mount,there are more than 5000 cameras available for this and costs double price of Arri product?

Just Kidding. A little.

I wish our expression of interest in LDS could be taken a little more seriously.

I believe that Jarred also mentioned that the price could go down significantly, depending on interest level, as opposed to a one off.

Don't worry Mark this hasn't fallen off the wagon... the RED and ARRI engineers are engaged.
