  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ALERT! Please read.

Mark, don't beat yourself up over this. In grand, grand scheme of things, it's just a blip on the radar. Who could expect someone to force their way into a house full of people? It's not like you could have R2D2 scanning the floor with a laser grid to prevent some kind of Mission Impossible heist. I'd rather you had the camera with you out in that beautiful place trying to get some footage, then sitting in a safe back home. You don't lose points for this, in my mind; you gain points.
 
The Japanese gangsters will sell it to a certain competitor for reverse engineering, NOT!

They probably don't even know what they have other than its electronic and small enough to carry. Most European towns have a local market place. Look there and you'll probably find it for sale for $100.

The item in question was orders of magnitude more valuable than a CD player. It was a highly coveted marvel of technology- the envy of an entire industry and arguably the most advanced camera ever devised. The number of people and organizations that covet it are legion. This should be reported to Interpol and the FBI.

The odds that a Chalet filled with sleeping vacationers in a remote resort town in France, near the Swiss and Italian borders would be broken into by an opportunistic thief (likely only two of them) and they only take this prize and some cash, beggars the imagination. The risk vs. reward on this job is completely upside down unless the target is the camera.

The camera would even be of interest to a foreign intelligence service.

The police here started doing research on the camera and got all fired up about it. I went back to the police station later today to find that most of the officers had worked through their lunch - they had created an impressive document with numerous images and details of the EPIC and this is now with law enforcement agencies throughout France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Keep your eyes and ears open.

I sincerely appreciate all the kind words expressed in posts here and the emails I've been getting today. I really wish I was posting 5K R3Ds and clips of slow motion skiers and snowboarders for you guys right now.

Sincerest condolences Mark. Its always a harrowing experience but I suspect you will have your baby back in short order. Its just the sort of thing to get the police revved-up and on the case. Best Wishes.

don't forget that France have one of the best police services (also secret service) in the world however some people like it or not.

Also I strongly believe that they will find it sooner or later...

Btw, the current French president is actually the former state police chief...
 
Guys, this stuff, unfortunately happens ALL the time, anywhere and everywhere. My friend who came to have a vacation in Vietnam stayed at a resort. Slept the first night, with laptop and pocket cam by his side, woke up with it gone. This stuff happens.

Granted this happened with a high profile electronic device, these bad things happen all too often. This explains why law enforcement may get desensitized when they get these calls.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy all this espionage talk. The Red One has been out for three years and I still haven't seen anyone come out with a 4k cam to compete yet.

Anyways, still crossing my fingers the thieves get caught.
 
It may be whoever has Epic 0006 may have found their way here to reduser through via google or something. They could be reading all this now.

While reverse engineering is a possible goal, the fact is, the world will soon be flooded with this camera. If this is the reason it was taken, they would only have a 60 day head start on breaking it down. We're really at the end of the effective window for this camera to be broken down for any competitive reasons.

However, an under-funded foreign intelligence service would have other goals for breaking down this piece of gear. This is a very powerful computer in a very small form-factor with some very advanced heat management applied to it. It also has a very high resolution imager on it and that, coupled with its light weight, makes it very suitable for use in remote surveillance applications.

But again, only a 60 day head start... so no real damage done, save for the crime itself and this juicy opportunity to ferret out a network of nefarious operatives... maybe.

But, this sounds targeted and professional. There were so many people in the house, it seems too daring for it to be a simple break-in. You're very lucky no one was hurt.

Since this was close to the border (even Africa through Marseille) it might be wise to alert Interpol. If this is Industrial Espionage, as some suggest, the crew would likely be Corsican and known to the authorities in France and Italy and this break-in could provide a juicy lead for them.

Calm down Jeff. This isn't Inspector Clouseau. Tourists with shiny photo gear get robbed everyday - even in LA...

From what I can tell Mark has got a good handle on the situation.

Indeed! And if they are motivated to do something they will be on it. It depends on how professional and wily the crooks are, as to speedy results.
 
I wonder if any of the stolen R-1s have ever been recovered?

Mark, I can't believe the shock you must feel. Very glad you and yours are safe!

When I was young, right after my wedding, someone saw the best man and my brother-in-law taking gifts into my apartment. They try to kick in the door to rob us that night but they realized they woke up my brother-in-law who was staying there and they left.
That is a weird feeling I was away at a hotel before the honeymoon and felt violated and I didn't even see it happen.
 
Great to hear the French police are doing a good job with the report.
It's in their nature to keep cool under pressure, but obviously this case
is being taken seriously.
So sorry for your loss and sense of being violated. This is one time when I would
agree to more big brother cameras.
