  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

On finding the stolen good: What if REDCINE included a "call home" feature which read the R3D data and check it against the stolen camera database and can log the IP of a computer which is handling the stolen camera's footage. Or if firmware is updated the firmware includes a list of stolen cameras that can brick a camera that's registered as stolen. Apologies if I'm repeating other ideas, but I think all of us would be okay with having a software feature that helped the community.

Again, this is assuming the thief knows what they have.

Something has to be done to stop the use of the camera if stolen...but tracking the use of it via GPS location and getting the people who have it has my vote...putting them in jail, priceless...
 
I suppose this is testament to how much some think Epic can mimic film? Thinking they won't be found out if they grade it to match and add a little grain..? Stupid plan for professional use anyway... They can't use it with a crew, and they sure can't sell it, at least not in the open. Maybe to some deviant collector? Maybe a guy with lots of money actually asked for it to be stolen, so he could record their baby's footsteps in 5k HDR?

I can't imagine that there was any kind of espionage involved, or even that the criminals had any idea what they were stealing! They will probably be scared witless when they hear about the reward.
 
This reminds me of when the Red One prototype was stolen, hopefully this is returned too.
 
People, please don't let shit like this destroy your sense of community or willingness to share with one another your Red related experiences or hopes. Practice discretion and take what you consider to be appropriate security measures, but don't let your passion for what's going on here, now and/or when you get your own camera's, be spiked by the fear of potential loss. That would be sad, that would be the true loss.

Mark was out there living the dream, and, I think it's safe to assume, he'll continue to do so in the future. And a lot of you will too. Remember that, and look forward to that. There are always bumps along the way, things wouldn't be the same without them.

Anyway.

This is all just my opinion, so don't take it as anything more than that, but I'm left with the impression that this was a random act of theft, planned only to the extent that the thieves may have picked Mark's group earlier as an easy target. And similarly, to suggest it had something to do with the presence of the Epic would only be true, in my opinion, to the extent that the ignorant thieves may have seen an 'expensive-looking camera' being used earlier and decided to go after it later. But I think even that is stretching believability.

I think it's natural for people on a forum like this to assume the Epic was the main target, because it's natural to project our own sense of its importance onto others outside of this 'scene'. But it's much more likely the thieves didn't even know the camera was there beforehand, or have any idea of its 'significance' even if they did target it. We all know what an Epic is, but 99.9999...% of the general population (including petty house-breaking thieves) wouldn't have a clue, or care to have a clue.

I don't think it's unfair to suggest either, considering the subject-matter of these forums, that there might be some 'creative' suggestions and theories put forward to try and make sense of what has happened. The fact too that it happened in what is a 'foreign' and perhaps exotic place for a lot of us, would tend to make us overlook the, unfortunately, mundane nature of such crime. But whether it be in a chalet in France, or in your own neighbourhood, the thieving low-lifes are all the same, there's nothing special about them or what they do, even when they manage to score an Epic. I think too, looking at that almost heart-breaking list of missing equipment, it defies our sensibilities to some extent, and is almost too cruel to suggest that such gear could have been taken by people who weren't even aware of it's actual 'value'. So, in a way, it's actually more comforting to think it might have been stolen by some company or film-nut who at least appreciates what they've got. The reality is probably much more tragic and 'ordinary'. And all the reasoning I've seen here so far, suggesting the theft was more than just a random, opportunistic act, doesn't hold up, can in fact be used to re-inforce my own opinion, or is at least debatable. But I'm not going there, so don't even bother, thanks.

I for one am just asking, in my 'imagination', for the thieves not to destroy the camera that they will quickly find to be un-sellable. Just dump it somewhere (where it can be found and returned to its owner.) Don't destroy it. It's valuable, but not to you. Just let it go. Don't destroy it. Even if you don't know why you shouldn't. Just off-load it to some sucker. Just put it aside and deal with it later if you don't know what to do with it now. But don't wreck it or dispose of it in a destructive way.

That's all I can do, just hope for a safe return of the equipment, and suggest others take a moment to do likewise. Send the message out, straight to the thieves themselves. Don't wreck the camera. Don't (do not), wreck (damage, destroy or split up), the camera (the camera or the other bits with it). It'll be better for you that way. It's in your own interests. Don't wreck the camera.
 
RED should try to contact Aaton just because Grenoble is about 123km from Méribel ski resort

and in that case they should know locally more about that sort of camera theft in the region.

Very upsetting, the Epic camera 006 that's sure and you and your family, I hope your family is okay emotionally, I know it take time to over it. Please take care your family that important. Mark, you said French police are doing good job. This point, I worried about your family's feeling. I am sorry.

I got ripped off once and it made me feel sick to my stomach. I would probably puke if this happened to me. :puke:

I agree that this seems like a random burglary that happened to come across this amazing gear.

My reasoning is this:

If I KNOW you have the Epic and I'm targeting it, I'm in and out with the camera inside of 60 seconds. I don't stick around to pore through someone's handbag and some dude's wallet.

This is how I feel right now thinking about this situation. Theft happens and it's one of the unfortunate aspects to our business. However, the way this happened with Mark's family there and potentially in danger if things went wrong makes me sick, and reminds me how low some people go to make a buck. I am relieved that no one was hurt here. People who are in the business of ruining other people's lives....well, usually it doesn't end well for most of you.
 
Just saw the news. I can't believe this is happening.

Unfortunately, it's not an april joke. And the 100K reward is the confirmation that this camera was really stolen.

It's a warning for us: I think I'll put in the safe at the hotel reception desk each time I can't personaly attend my own RED cam on travel.
