  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ALERT! Please read.

Wow this is outrageous news.

I'd have to wonder if this was typical dodgy behavior in that area and the thieves just thought they were grabbing camera gear and some cash. If so, I bet the camera turns up. The thieves probably have been to this thread already. They have to know they can't sell it publicly.

OTOH, if someone really did target that camera then they knew exactly what they were getting. It may end up in another billionaire's collection. Or is being reverse engineered as we speak.

Thank God nobody woke up and confronted these people.

Would real corporate espionage pros have even bothered grabbing the cash? I guess it could've been a cover, but seem rather risky wasting the time to do that.

Jim, can you develop one more product for the RED community?

Some sort of lock box that can be shipped, flown, etc.. that is impenetrable? If anyone can build it, it's you.

Bonus points for adding an alarm, shocking mechanism, oil slick, poison darts or HAARP like death ray.

I think a lot of people would buy em, "RED box"? possibly have a Knight Rider type of warning light?

I can see it being filled with all your Red goodies/valuable equip daisy chained to the substructure of whatever buildiing you are in..

Just a thought..

Aside from having gear stolen, the time it takes to replace it is equally as draining..

Hopefully the thieves make a genuine masterpiece with the camera and return it.

I've been banging on for years about micro-implanting humans in the future with locator devices, but apparently something about privacy laws something something gets in the way. Whatever. All this from the person who posted recently that technology would be the death of us. Could be the bi-polar thing. No it isn't. Shut up. You shut up.

Micro locators on valuable equipment (are and) will happen; the machines aren't so finicky about their privacy.

Beyond all this, I'm glad Mark that no-one was hurt here (other than emotionally hurt)... I'm saddened about that as it causes real damage. Hopefully #6 will come home.

As Jim said, that is just unthinkable. Man, that's so so so sad. May whoever stole it have a major karmic backlash of epic proportions.

i just saw this...been on vacation myself...but immediately shared with a friend of mine whom is a member of the international law enforcement community specializing in international terrorism, he has regular contacts globally that he reports to and supports. obviously it is new years eve and i do not expect him to drop everything and immediately send a wire out via interpol, but he may just take this serious enough to start a larger net to be cast...or just have another drink and blow it off, but at least it is worth a try.

side note, he tells me crazy stories about following terrorist in their exploits, so he is the real deal.

mark, holy crap, worst nightmare come true. glad your family is safe.

I am so sorry to hear about this Mark. I too have had a video camera stolen while I was in LA shooting the Feast of San Gennaro for a friend associated with the Son's of Italy - Hollywood Chapter. I was a student then and it was my only video camera. As others have posted their condolences I too am glad you and your family are alright. I know that feeling of being violated. It hurts and stays with you for a while, but from experience I know that it will pass. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mark,

You haven't let anybody down! Pioneers will always face danger first, be mocked and endure hardships, but that's what it takes. You weren't just looking into an LCD hooked up to an EPIC...you were taking a peek into the beginning of the future of the film industry worldwide. That's a beautiful privilege to have and you obviously know that.

You are a smart man and, by now, have obviously done everything in your power to alert the authorities and to catch the people responsible for this. Jim has shown that RED stands behind you 100%, and this thread shows that we do too. So it's probably best for you to focus on what comes next and how to move on. It's been said in practically every post, and it's true...your people are physically unharmed and that outweighs any property loss.

What has made RED and this community so different, so productive and so different is its willingness to change, to roll with the punches, to move ahead despite all odds disregarding all nostalgia or romanticism about how things "used to be done". You are definitely a spearhead in this whole experience. Things happen and it's our decision whether to dwell on them or to move into the future. RED is about the future, so let's concentrate on that. We need you there more than worrying about things we cannot change. Epic #00006 holds a special place in all our minds and hearts, and after this comes to a resolution it will either be a story about a historical theft or an incredible story of recover to tell everyone. In the end the technology and scientific advance wasn't stolen and YOU, followed shortly by all of US will still be shooting EPIC images.

We're happy to have people like you test the cameras and give valuable input to make everyone's experience better. Your privileges are commented widely in this forum, but your help and work does not go unnoticed.

I hope you make this New Year a happy one for you and your loved ones, because happy years don't HAPPEN, they are made by us. Greetings all the way from Bolivia, South America. Hope we can meet in person some day...and I obviously hope that you find time in this hectic period of your life to read this (now that I see it...rather long) message.

Post of the week! :iagree:

Does the camera have built-in WiFi, and does it connect automatically? What protocols is it running? The same people who programmed the code can put on their white hats and do some hacking of their own device...

Mark, I'm so sorry to hear about this, but thankful that no one was hurt, and that you're surrounded by friends, family, and community as the new year rolls around.
Best,
Adam

Mark, I'm glad to hear your family was unharmed physically. I hope that the emotional harm will be forgotten soon. I'm pretty sure that if anyone will find these idiots it's you with the help of Jim.
Best regards,
Felix

Mark - I join everyone in wishing you all the best in the light of this aweful violation. Glad you are safe. You live to fight another day. May 2011 be an amazing year for you

I just want to add my voice of support but also of reinforcement to the point that so many others are making about placing the emphasis on Mark's family's safety. That is all that truly matters in the scheme of things. My wife and I just lost both of her parents this year on Christmas Eve. I do not want any condolences or pity. I only say this to you because now I realize from a position of recent experience that this Epic we are worrying about is just a thing. It's a beautiful feat of technology but that...is...it.

MARK: You came out so far ahead in this situation. Please be thankful everyday for what you did not lose that night. This outcome was truly the best you could ever dream for.

Mark , I understand the pain you feel, but really thank God you and the family are safe &
unharmed!

Mark, my best wishes to you and your family. Glad they are all safe after the incident.

I just got back in town and this was definitely not what I expected to find on Reduser. :-(

Mark -

I'm very glad your family is safe. Good thing this happened at the year's end. You will have so much more good things this year.

Best,

Okay I'm sure this has been mentioned before -- and I'm sure you've given them hell -- but WTF is up with the resort security???? Not exactly easy or low-risk to steal so much from such a remote area like this ...
Anthony

Crimes like this are usually impossible without some degree of negligence or outright co-operation from the Resort staff. It could be just simple carelessness, someone asking a few seemingly innocent questions of the housekeeper or a paid insider alerting the crew.

More likely someone overheard a conversation (that they have their ears open for anyway) and just followed Mark back to the chalet. I am troubled by the security door, that suggests an insider of some type.

Mark:

I don´t think locals did it...It´s such a small place (not many locals) that if there was a thief around pollice would know him for sure. I think that might have been younger tourists that did it...and they didn´t know what they were taking....
Hope you get your RED baby back.
