Adobe Abandons Creative Suite, Announces Full Switch to Creative Cloud

Hi Al,

Thanks so much for coming on board for this discussion. it must have been difficult given some of the hostility that has been exhibited. I just joined creative cloud and really like the direction Adobe Premier Pro is going and appreciate the support for Red stuff in particular. I guess that there is one main concern that I have - just how solid is the monthly validation process? I have had several scares already where I tried to use my software and I could not do so. It did right itself after a few goes but is that really acceptable? I think that professional users are concerned that they are going to get to work one morning and find that they their tool box is "locked" and that no one can find the key. Cheers

Regarding the 'hard question' - we don't currently plan to start offering perpetual versions of our software again. I know that's not what some of you want to hear, so sorry, but I don't want to mislead.

Hello Al,

Thanks for posting.

Do you have the ability and the authority to effect change at Adobe, as in, if you wanted to, could you make the
corporate decision to sell both the real DVD-ROM Boxed versions of your software and the CC cloud versions?

Al and Dave, your CEO stated on Bloomberg BusinessWeek that he believes "in the next few years, weʻll be saying how could we even think of an application that wonʻt be always connected". Understood thatʻs not in place yet. Given that the Adobe subscription model is the only option forward, and the company clearly plans to move their products to be cloud-centric, where will this leave those who cannot always be connected? What confidence do they have that the future of Adobe products will accommodate their work, when Adobe is concentrating all their future focus on the cloud?

Just to clarify something that matters around these parts...

Will CS6 support Dragon or Scarlet Dragon or since its EOL we all must upgrade to CC to use our soon to be released sensors? Cuz if so that forces our hand at this...Whoever can support the new color science fastest out of all the NLE's will matter... along with price point....

Well then that little nugget of hope I was holding on to is lost. This is indeed a sad day for me. My love affair with Photoshop goes back about 22 years. It pre-dates my first computer and it was the sole reason why I bought my first one. I still love it, but this is one place where I just can't or won't follow.

Leasing durable goods is just not an acceptable model for us and we treat software like any other tool, computer or car. We buy quality and work it hard until it is no longer capable of serving us. Salesman will tempt us with a lease, and tell us this will enable us to always have the Shiny New Thing, but we sometimes must forego the Shiny New Thing to maximize our return on investment. That to us is fiscal responsibility. That is how we stretch a dollar when things are tight... And things are tight.

Software is not a consumable commodity. We will not treat it as such. I am not wed to a box or a disc. I buy and download software online very freely. This is about the lease alone.

When it is time for CS6 to go, we will be finished if no other choice is available. Farewell, my sweet.

A little late to the game, but I thought I would voice my concerns....

I doubt I will at the moment...but the thought is crossing my mind..... to abandon adobe.

It seems as though they waited until their market share reached critical mass before enacting this plan...which at the heart of it is a money grab.

With final cut abandoning the pro market, and avids financial future uncertain (indefinitely postponed releasing last quarters earnings...and loosing money every quarter, currently at a $3.83 loss per share) adobe is slowly rising as the defacto standard in editing and workflow.

Sure there are other good options....but not really for photoshop

The problem with the CC subscription is this.

My old CS upgrades were around $350 a year

Under the new pricing I can get the first year for $360....but after that it is $600 a year.

This is for software I don't own.

My costs to upgrade will go from $350 to $600 a year, and I loose the right to use the software 30 days after my final payment.
This is not good

But they got me by the balls....I've invested a lot and developed an expertise using their software.

This seems like the wave of the future....but I really think the timing of this move, has to do with the current state of dwindling competition....and realizing what other choices do you have.

It is still a good deal for all that software, but this is straight up about increasing profits with no thought of the customer convinience...because they can

I find that when using cloud, if my system isn't connected to the web I constantly lose my R3D presets. This means when I travel to remote locations (which I do a lot), it makes Adobe useless to me. Can't afford for that to happen any longer. Movin' on.
Sounds like you should report a bug. Red support is in no way hooked to licensing.

cheers

If you look back we have always been very proactive in getting the latest red support added to our current version. We always work very close with red on their latest color science/cameras. I would anticipate that continuing.

Yes, but is that with CS6 as per Brian's question, or only with the rented stuff?

Dave, are you affirming that the latest RED support will only be present in the current Creative Cloud version of Adobe products, and not in legacy versions such as CS6? As stated in the original question, this is an important question for the members of this forum.

As stated in our FAQ's we will continue to sell CS6 but new feature development will take place in Premiere Pro CC

Cheers
Dave

I have started investigating LightWorks which seems really intriguing. It will soon be available as a Mac option. Seems to have the best features of Avid and supports Red footage.

So you are going to sell end of line products with out of date codec support as new software?

And it will also be open source. No more being held hostage by a company you've been a loyal customer to.

Hi Al,

Welcome and thanks for shimming in. As for your post, I think all that is pretty clear. However, it doesn't erase the fact that it is a step back compared to the previous model. Lets compare this to the competition- not in quality, but in service. FCPX is a software I own and can install in 5 computers. It had since its release 8 updates, which where free. Lets look at adobe: Premiere Cs6 also had a couple of stability and small enhancements for free. Now in CC, I will not own the software, will be paying about 600 USD a year, and will be getting "free" updates. How long ago has FCPX come out ? About 2 years? Including the other pro apps, this would mean , in new Adobe World, at least 1200 USD, a lot more than I paid for the Apple software which is constantly updating with features.

Lets not forget that new "features" often come with bugs and need time to mature and be stable. If I get CC, prudence tels me to not immediately update and see if it works well with OS, Rocket, etc. If I'm subscription based, I feel like I'm paying for something that should be right in the first place and that I should own. Yes its 30 or 50 dollars a month, but it feels like I can be kicked out of the house if I miss rent for a month or two.

Anyway, you guys know best what business you run. I'm back to Apple. Hope someone makes an affordable alternative to after effects!

Adobe Cloud & "Privacy"

Hi Everyone

I'm Al, the Adobe Premiere Pro Product Manager. I'm new to this forum (hi!) but I wanted to introduce myself and try to clarify some points.

Historically, Adobe has run on a 12-18 month release cycle, and licenses were perpetual. This meant that, were we to (for example) release a new product in May, if we were to hear from the community in June that there was an absolutely critical feature that we were lacking, the earliest we could provide customers with that feature would be the following May. This is not an internal Adobe thing, it's due to very limiting and strict revenue recognition laws which prevent the addition of new features to perpetual license customers at zero cost.

The Creative Cloud model changes all this. Because it's a subscription system, we are going to be able to add new features to the software much more regularly than the 12-18 month release cycle, and I predict you'll start seeing this change pretty soon. This, I believe, provides significant added value to Creative Cloud when compared to the previous model. Creative Cloud allows us to much more aggressively develop, and in these days of light-speed technological change, this will, I hope, be a great benefit. And note that you can have your apps installed on two separate machines, even one Mac and one PC, and use the apps on both.

I'd also like to dispel a couple of misconceptions. Firstly, this is not some kind of hosted service. These are the same applications, installed locally, that you would have got if we sold them on a DVD. The only difference is that you install them via a download. We are not hosting your files (unless you want us to!). Secondly, you do not need to be permanently connected to the internet. If you're on a monthly subscription, there is a mandatory check-in every 30 days to check you've paid, and there is a 7-day grace period if you haven't. If you buy a year in advance, that check-in period is 180 days.

Regarding pricing, we've pitched it at a point where the majority of users who upgrade regularly are likely to be paying less, for more frequent updates, access to all of our apps, and the CC community. If you use the special offer we have currently, you can get all of what would have been 'Master Collection' for 30 dollars US a month.

There is a very thorough FAQ on our site too, which may have been linked to previously, but just for the record: http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.edu.html

I realize that this is a big change, and I'm sure that some of you feel strongly enough to go elsewhere, but i hope this at least clarifies some points. I'll hang around this thread over the next days, so if you have questions feel free to ask them.

thanks
al.

Hi Al & David,

I believe the Adobe CC is an incredibly bad idea, frought with tons of legal implications to be thoroughly litigated.
I have another post, but i'll add the question here since you joined this forum.
Your CEO thinks it wise to host apps, project files and footage from Adobe's Cloud,
so please respond in regard to these 3 scenarios in regard to privacy:

Scenario 1:
I am an editor cutting a news story where our cameraman just shot footage of a Chicago police officer
striking an unarmed female college student at a protest. In Illinois, it is illegal to film a police officer,
having to do with antiquated wiretapping laws.

The cameraman uploads the footage to the Adobe Cloud.

Question 1. Does Adobe turn over the footage in the Cloud to the Illinois state police as evidence,
and offers no protection to the cameraman or editor who uploaded to their own cloud space?

Scenario 2:
College students shoot footage in a major city subway without permit for an independent feature or school project, uploads to the Adobe Cloud, and
the camera man is later arrested for shooting in the city without permit. For a temporary track, the editor uploaded a U2 track
while cutting the scene.

Question 2: Does Adobe turn over the files to the police or FBI as evidence for violation of copyright and film permit laws?

Scenario 3: The above 2 scenarios take place, yet neither the cameraman or editor were never prosecuted by the authorities. 2 years later,
the Adobe Cloud account is hacked and the footage is leaked online. The authorities now request the footage from Adobe and who stored it.

Question 3a. Does Adobe notify the parties their account has been hacked?
Question 3b. In what countries are the files stored under what legal jurisdictions, and does Adobe deny authorities access?
Question 3c. Does Adobe cooperate with the Authorities to locate all the people who touched the files at any point without notifying them they are being investigated?

I just think people need to know whom the cloud serves first, and do you allow every legal entity the right to search projects
without notifying us...

@ Rob Castiglione lets us know how you go with Lightworks . Because as we've just heard above ^^^^^^^ Dragon codec update will ONLY be available on CC7.

So I guess everyone needs to look around & consider their options because soon or later you will have to go subscription to access this update...timeline the next 6 months or so pending Dragon upgrade schedule.
