  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Action Products Raptor Offer: Only Good Until 3/22

oh it happened ;)

still waiting for a few parts but got it up and balanced for the most part, started adjusting the vest, everytime time i take it off and adjust more it just keeps getting better and better.

the form and design is amazing as is the craftsmanship. Being this is my first rig, a lot of new ground to cover and a lot of practice and working out to be done. a bit daunting to think i will shoot a feature in 2 months with this baby as well as a stack of small gigs before then. But couldn't be more excited to have such a sweet rig to see me through it. I will post some more as time progresses. Monitor to come start of week so then i will really get to start playing, just in time to shoot a music video!

We have now started with our tutorial videos. There is only one online yet (how to mount the adapter plate). We will however now be putting them online continuously.
The following link will take you there: Raptor Support

Just though I would embed this video so it would be easier for people. Enjoy :)

Cool with the little video tutorials Daryl and Justin.

If I can recomend one would it be possible to get a tutorial of the setting up of the vest as well as setting up the arm mounting bracket? I read through the Rebel Manual but the vest was a bit different for that series.

Also was wondering about the docking bracket, when the camera is in resting mode in the dock it has to hang on an angle because the bottom rods and monitor mount get in the way of the c-stan holding the rig. How did you set yours up at the office to get around this?

Otherwise loving my rig and putting it to use as much as possible. Very fun! Next week it off for a 10 day shoot with a short film.

Well, I got mine today. Initial impressions are generally very positive!

One hiccup, I nor anyone else should have ordered the fixed post option on the arm. I just thought it meant it wasn't interchangeable... it means it is locked (who knew..."fixed".... duh) and when you need to swing the gimbal for a switch, it grinds against the post and makes an awful sound, awful feeling, and totally bones your move.

I tried calling Justin today to discuss about replacing the arm post - but he's out of the office so I left an email.

So if you are thinking of ordering this in the future, definitely go with the non-fixed arm post. The fixed version to me is an absolute no go because the gimbal binds and grinds.

Also, I'm really skinny and the vest just barely fits... so if any other really skinny operators have any thoughts on making further adjustments, let me know. So far I've added some egg-crate type foam to the lumbar area to add some girth. It helped enough to make it settle a bit better.

Otherwise - this thing is really impressive and the fact that it all fits into their pelican style case with custom cut foam - which is just smaller than a Storm IM2750 and weighs just above 40 lbs when packed... is pretty dang incredible. Oh and the boom range of the arm, WOW, it's almost higher than I can reach.

As soon as the arm post issue is sorted out, I'll opt to fly this over my full size rig whenever possible.

I would like to give a feedback on the post Kyle made:

- The vest can be set to be very narrow. So Kyle must be a very slender person. We have posted him how to set up the most narrow setup and are waiting for a respond to see if it will fit properly then.
- The fixed arm post: This is a standard setup like it is used by other system too. The sound and effect Kyle is describing is caused by the Anodization because both products are new. It can be solved by using a bit of the grease that is included in the spare parts package (in the case you find it in the little silver box).
Some operators like using a fixed position and dislike the none-fixed one (that is the reason the Pro version can be adjusted and even locked down). This is a very individual decision every Operator needs to make. If you find your self wanting to exchange the fixed one to the pro version. Then please contact us. This can easily be done by your self. You DO NOT need to send the arm in for this.

I've flown my kit on on both a short film now, 12 days and a music video.

Love Love Love it.

I got the heavy springs and it definitely feels amazing when you get the weight ratio up and right, I was flying the Epic with Alurra Zooms on the short and it was smooth as butter. On the Music Video I was using DSLR Lenses and wasn't as fun then since the camera wasn't quite heavy enough, Makes me consider ordering the lite weight springs as well, keeps the arms from working so hard holding the rig down. This has been my most satisfying purchase since my Epic and can't wait to bring it on set for my next feature I am DPing in 3 weeks.

Hello Kyle , most professional arm posts can be either locked or not. But being locked isn't a problem, a little grease and you are set for a long time, and after the equipment get used more it will go, you will be able to do everything even with out grease.

I notice on your set up that you have connected a Noga and a red monitor at the back. This is not very wise since nogas aren't that rigid, and where this is located , if it moves it will effect your balance. I would suggest to use a more stable fixed mount for your monitor up there , and generally use as much solid as possible connections, brackets, and even rooting cables and don't let them hang down and move.

have fun with your rig, its a great product, and I have suggested it to everyone with out a doubt.

Yes, Darryl did get back to me right away - Did anyone mention, great customer service?

As Darryl said, a little grease did make a huge difference - neither of my previous smaller rigs have had a completely fixed arm post, both the flyer arm and zephyr arm I used to have would spin and my current Pro Arm has adjustable tension at the post. So yes, if you do get the fixed arm post, I redact my statement, it is certainly flyable. However, I'll still be replacing it with the rebel pro version as Darryl has graciously offered to allow for a switch.

Also... speaking of the Pro Arm. I can't say this arm flies just as nice as the Pro Arm.... but that's mostly because it cost me as much as a down payment on a house. It also can have a load over 70lbs so it is definitely in a different class and there really isn't a direct comparison. But I will say the Raptor arm behaves in a similar way and is incredibly smooth even when doing a very slow move you stay very much in control and it doesn't follow the rise and fall of your body like the Zephyr arm would at slow speeds. This is an incredible system.

Thanks for the friendly advice, Kostas - with the Red Touch screen, it is light enough that I've not had a problem with vibrations or movement in the arm once it is set. Generally though, I do avoid them on steadicam. The #1 thing I really hate about Noga Arms is when an AC tries to use it to move the screen around for viewing when setting up a shot. For that reason alone I generally attach the red monitor directly to the top of the camera facing flat and straight up when I'm on set. In this situation for running around my apartment the monitor already lives on the arm with a CineLock so it was just quicker to attach it for weight.

Vladimir - As the guy who made an issue out of it... I can tell you that greasing the post almost makes it a non-issue because I prefer [almost] friction free movement in regards to the letting the gimbal swing freely when making a switch or narrowing out through a doorway so that you can maintain the sleds proper position and move your body around, or away from the sled. Being able to fine tune that amount of friction to me is important to perfect that control because you also don't want it to get away from you completely.

Like Darryl said, it comes down to personal preference and developing a muscle memory as to how your gimbal reacts so that when you need to have the gimbal swing, you are in complete control of it.

I believe that my Raptor is the last and the best group buy Raptor to be shipped out. It is due to the fact that I customized my rig so heavily. Anyway, congratulations to all new Raptor owners and Kudos to all of you who developed the product and made available for group buy!

Mine is supposed to have shipped today, so I guess I am the last one. Still waiting on a tracking number.
Brian, did you get the tracking number? Mine hasn't been shipped yet.
