If sony can do it why can't you? (Epic)

"3D System Link Option
Using this option you can easily synchronize timecode, genlock and control functionality with a single cable, locking together left and right cameras to simplify 3D acquisition. (Feature available from April 2011.) "

All of us 3D RED user have been asking for this feature for years......I have heard rumors of this magical cable on the epic someday becoming a reality via the GIG-E port on the back of the Epic......is this true?

Please help us tech's get rid of having to deal with a gen10 and lockit boxes all the cable and complications those items bring to the party.....

Pretty please?

What say you RED? Going let sony show you up?

2 Sony F3's looking like a very popular choice this year for 3D....... I'd rather be using EPIC/Scarlet of course!!!

+1 for no more cable spaghetti :P

Does the EPIC Genlock Cable (3D Package / Timecode) solve this? (Part # 790-0154)

No the genlock cable is just a "pigtail" of BNC's. It allows you to send a genlock signal from a AjA gen10 and a TC signal from a Lockit or similar device and the third BNC is for start/stop trigger.

Where do you find this.? I looked in store in accessories and cables. Nada.

Comes with the Epic-M package. Or at least I think that's what the cable was that was included?

But yes, plugging the cams in via Ethernet and just having everything sync up would rock. Question is: are packet latencies etc good enough? Or use USB?

Or if you could:
- attach genlock cable to both cams (and they'd sync without AJA box)
- wirelessly simultaneously control all other settings for both cams via one redmote?

One cable is still simplest and better though - if it can be done reliably?

From what I've seen in pics of Element Technica 3D Epic rigs, there is a module that they've made which snaps onto the back of the body, then has a single port that will connect the cameras.

See link...

Well sort of.......the "IO module" is a part made by Element Technica (as far as I know) not RED.

Also you are still adding something instead of subtracting items.

If there was a cable like the Sony 3D cable for the F3.......all you would need is 2 camera bodies and 1 cable to link everything. TC, Shutter and controls.

I would love to hear an official response to this feature request.........

Considering the amount of 3D production happening on Epics I would imagine this feature be at the top of someone's list........

Why not.....like I said if sony can do it why can't RED?

I'm sure if RED makes it a priority they can make anything happen.

It's funny how 3D guys think 3D is the center of the universe :)

On Epic there is genlock, sync in, and sync out and a couple
of different modes to drive sync from camera to camera or from
an external source (moco, etc). Ethernet can be used to sync settings, etc
between two cameras and/or multiple cameras. Control can
also be used to record rig metadata (ET, 3ality now, and other
inputs later).

...so is that now official enough answer? that's it then? simple as that?

Good point Pedro!

I'm no DP... but I liked the F3s on the PS technik Freestyle rig.
I was demonstrating the setup along with the SONY MPE 200 box for live, concert, sports and handheld shooting.

article (for those interested: http://realvision.ae/blog/2011/02/s...pth-of-field-to-stereoscopic-3d-movie-making/ )

Deviating slightly from the topic, I'm keen on getting my hands on a pair of Epics with 5K capability. and the possibility of using them simply side-by-side without those fat ole mirror rigs.
Yes I know, how do I get "closeups"? ...there are ways, and it depends on 3D scene framing and previz and post software wizardry and a combination of all these.

but back to topic..as Pedro asked:
Why no single cable to create a master-slave camera pair?

As to whether 3D is the center of the universe, a trip down the aisle of the local Carrefour, Walmart etc will show how kids are saying.."what no Blue ray 3D version? yet?"

Hope that answers the question ;o)

Hey Denan,

hehehe......Yeah.....naturally I'm biased since I make my living around 3D. I know you guys have the whole world putting pressure on you guys to add features to the Products and you guys dealing with a multitude of other issues.....but I can hope right?

Actually, it was someone at RED that told me that they had plans for a "GIG-E 3D cable". Since I haven't heard anything about for awhile I wanted to bring it up and see what the official answer was.

If the answer is "maybe last quarter of 2011, not really a priority right now" that's cool.....was just more curious if there was any plans for it or if we are indeed stuck with our good friend the gen10 forever....
