  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

8K CF Weapon Sensor Upgrade

All that arguing about resolution again, a lot of people need to take a chill pill and get glasses. There are a lot of people that can pick 8k but it guess less with age related decline in eye sight, so it is a completely valid choice.
It's funny to see the same arguments and semi-scientific attempts to proof something popping up again and again since the beginning of Digital, then HD, then 4k and now 8k. It will never stop. People tend to be not objective here, lots of "investment protection" is going on, besides other things. The usual behavior when it comes to progress and technical evolution.

And 2 hours later the same people who said 4k is too much are trying to tell me how beautiful that screen on their new phone is: FullHD or even more on 5-6".

I know i can see a difference between 2k and 4k - and the performance of my eyes is a joke compared to an average human. :)

I can't wait to see a 8k projection or ~100" 8k-tv with some Weapon-8k-footage!!!

At nab a couple of the presenters we're going over the problems and concepts of shooting for vr. General theme was your shooting to create a emotional memory not a quick cut(and you don't normally want to move the camera to quickly). Anyway the problem was something a 30 feet away from a camera had very few pixels yet was easily visible to the viewer. Something 200 feet away had way fewer pixels. Anyway long story short is something like a gopro had to be situated much closer to the actors then you'd think. Reminded me of nab just a few years ago when the presenters where going over 4k, but these examples were much more compelling. If people are watching the channel volume "numbers" change, with the switch to TCP/IP broadcasting and all, I think 8k is critical for anyone wanting to be relevant for the channels that are growing.

I just want FedEx to drop the 8K weapon on my doorstep. That day can't get here soon enough...

So my question is will an 8k Weapon and a 6K Weapon work together? If the 8k Sensor is used in a 6k or 5k mode, can we use the same workflows and expect it to be a good match to a 6k Dragon sensor in the Weapon?
I shoot stuff for museums and effects work sometimes, and that would really benefit from having 8k as an option, but I almost always use two cameras on my regular jobs, where I won't often be shooting 8k.

So I'm wondering if I need to upgrade both to 8k, even though most of my work won't be 8K, upgrade both to the 6k Weapon (and rent an 8k Weapon when I need it), or "mix and match" as it were.

They will perfectly match. It's basically the same sensor, with the 8k just taking a bigger slice of the wafer.

Oh i see regular stuff benefiting from bigger sensors, it's not just about the pixels and resolution. But those additional pixels give you even more room for re-framing and stabilizing...

Hehe. Decisions, decisions...

I have not seen this stated. Just that the pixel pitch is approximate. Has someone from RED said this? That sensitivity and colorimetry and pixel size are a match? 6K and smaller images from an 8K Weapon are an identical look and workflow as on a 6K Weapon? That would make things easier.

Jeff,

The VV sensor frame rate has the 'Dragon' readout limitation (it's 60 fps FF 8K).

Even with extra horse power the 6k frame rate is Dragon readout rate limited.

This would imply it's the same technological back end.

In terms of the pitch:

40.96 mm / 8192 pixels
21.6 mm / 4320 pixels

= 5 micron square
= Same as Dragon

Peter - thanks for the comment on MammothHD's footage - YES, MammothHD will be upgrading to Weapon 8K and building the Library with 8K footage - as soon the cameras start to ship. It fits the needs of several markets - from feature films to digital signage. One more step in resolution... and not the last by any means. We're already hearing from several of the MHD Talentbase that they have placed their order for the 8K Upgrade path - really looking forward to this.... just not the storage requirements.

…Phil… im salivating… please feed me more info.

Any word on DR?
Those histograms look lovely but don't know shooting conditions.
Any thing you can leak about shooting on new sensor?
I do read most of your post, so forgive me if I overlooked a post.

From what I've heard, the 8k Vista Vision is a completely new sensor. Not just a larger slice of Dragon.

Kyle, that was shot in the RED booth at NAB. Phil was not actually present for that image, which Jarred posted on his Facebook page.
Ah thanks Stacey.

I probably shouldn't miss NAB again…ever.

Jarred could Red offer people that are upgrading to the 8K Weapon a discount on RedRocket-X Cards Again?

Am thinking i might need it :-)
