  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

8K CF Weapon Sensor Upgrade

Kyle, that was shot in the RED booth at NAB. Phil was not actually present for that image, which Jarred posted on his Facebook page.

I was there watching Lu shoot it. Just had some folks from out of town mid-chat that caused me not to be closer to the stage.

What I know was this was shot with the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L II and it was a dark on stage as Dirty South spun.

Also, it's damn pretty.

From what I've heard, the 8k Vista Vision is a completely new sensor. Not just a larger slice of Dragon.

As far as I know and as far as RED has mentioned RED Weapon 8K Dragon Carbon Fiber features a larger version (larger cut) of the current 6K Dragon.

As this image moderately reveals:

Also.

WHAT IS THE 8K SENSOR UPGRADE?
RED is offering a pre-order for the next generation 8K sensor, along with placing your WEAPON CF deposit.
Featuring a VistaVision format sensor that measures 40mm x 20mm (40.96mm x 21.6mm) and is capable of capturing up to 60 frames per second at 8K FF (8192 x 4320) and up to 75 frames per second at 8K 2.40:1.

is this still dragon sensor?
Higher frame rates can be achieved in windowing mode or subsampling mode ?

Still Dragon sensor. I dont believe extra high speed is possible (at lower resolutions)...Jarred has mentioned Dragon sensor itself is the bottleneck for additional frame rates...

Honestly i dont care for higher framerates, just dont like that windowing mode at all.if we can still do 150-200fps 4K without windowing it would be awesome.

I think that is a safe assumption until Red says otherwise.

I hope Phil is right and the 8k weapon upgrade gets a boost as well.
10k 2.4:1 aspect seems the logical choice.
10368 x 4320, 51.85mm x 21.60mm
Using MF lenses would then be much more practical and it would be almost the size of Alexa65's 54.12 x 25.58 sensor
and of course 10k for $10k has a nice ring to it, at least for those who put our deposits down.

We are updating all the tech specs and copy on RED.com to show the 4.5K ripple effect as we speak....

This was buried in the Raven excitement, but I'm more interested in how it ripples out to Weapon, I didn't see an updates on red.com.

9k? 10k? Will this delay the upgrades?

No effect on Weapon. I just meant specs for Raven were adjusted to account for it now being 4.5K sensor...

Has there been any tangible progress on the 8k/VV sensor? Or is it still sort of pie in the cloud?

I'm guessing I'm not the only Epic Dragon owner waiting for news on that. The Weapon, as nice as it is, just doesn't have enough benefits for me to motivate the cost. But if there's a bigger sensor, oh boy...

I understand, with my CF Dragon in the shop for Stealthe upgrade as we speak, that the previously stated release of the 8K sensor is on track to commence this December...

Thank you very much

Fury

SO curious is Zeiss Variable Prime 1,2, & 3 cover the 8k sensor. Anyone know? I read super 35, full 35, and 35mm is covered, obviously left me confused. tried searching for the thread on lenses that will cover 8k but after 3 search attempts this was the closest thread I could find.

My understanding is the variable primes are only S35.

The newer Zeiss Compact Zooms DO cover Full Frame/8K however.

I like them, BUT.... they breathe, and do not cover 8K. However, they are very like a Master Prime in sharpness.
Also, not very assistant friendly. Haven't tried them handheld or steadicam.
If you are willing to put up with their ergonomic quirks, they are a very compact way to get a set of focal lengths in a small package.
I think Dante's Peak was shot primarily with them... if any one from that show is here..please confirm or deny.

while we're in this thread....If our weapon upgrade isn't called to be executed until the 8k sensor is released, will the cameras that have 8k sensor pre ordered be shipped back with body and sensor upgrade performed?
