  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

8K CF Weapon Sensor Upgrade

I think we've started to see from Jarred that it's working with a recent FB post. Can't wait to get my notice.

It's been posted before, but I shot with the 8K Weapon back in JULY. In fact, Jarred has had up and running 8K Weapons since NAB. They are yet being much more specific about how they debug and gear up to release new cameras. 8K Weapons are going to come out of the gate with a vengeance.

Wow, would love to see what the image looks like. I have some BIG plans for mine. Totally fine with Red getting it right. They are close or on target dates all the time now so we should hear a lot more over the next month.

Can we please get a status report on the 8k sensor? Has it been acquired from the manufacturer in small/large numbers and is just being stress tested before rolling out in (December? hopefully) or is it still in manufacturing mode?

More of a curiosity request than any thing but since the competition already knows about it, shouldn't cause a competitive penalty to update, would it?

I'm not RED, but everything I've heard very recently is that it's still on track for a end of the year release.

Just thinking out loud here.

+) In February 2016 - I expect that RED will still Upgrading EPICs -> 6K WEAPONS
+) And that RED will be ramping up queue to Upgrade 6K WEAPONS -> 8K WEAPONS

What would REDs view be on the creating of an addition Queue that for already-paid 8K upgrades that :
+) Would allow not yet upgraded EPICs -> Exchange For a New 8K WEAPON
+) That would not get money back on the EPIC until the 'health check' & repair was completed by RED (which would take months)

This would mean:
+) no Double Upgrade headache for RED (for those wishing to upgrade from Epic to 8k Weapon)
+) a massive reduction in 8k upgrade backlog (as RED could now ship brand new Weapon 8k Cameras)
+) Simpler for RED to sell battle tested - fully functional EPIC DRAGONS.

Yes thinking the same, if the 8k stuff is ready in time I think a lot of us who paid for it at nab will probably not really have worn out their 6k weapons before time to upgrade... So think how good it would be if they started to ship those 8k cakes straight a way. It´s a brilliant idea I think :)

Pretty interesting actually. Or at least go directly from Epic 6K to Weapon 8K (new or "upgrade" works for me)

Any chance we could go directly to 8K?

Any chance we could go directly to 8K?

I've resisted bringing this up several times, but it sure would be sweet to only have to do one "upgrade" rather than two. Like some others, I placed my $10K deposit for the 8K VV Dragon cut when it was offered around NAB. I time stamped my Weapon woven CF deposit at 3:xx AM Monday of NAB, etc. Since I'm upgrading from an Epic-X, I'm still waiting out the Epic CF & M folks which could easily put my allocation notice in December - by which time RED may have an 8K sensor or two in the house. The hassle/time factor can be crucial for folks who operate a bit farther off the grid, anywhere outside the US and EU, not near LA, London, NYC, etc....

But what about the folks who kicked down for Epic CF, Weapon forged and the 8K chip? Would it be fair for me or any of the (Weapon waiters with 8K deposits in) to be shooting 8K before them? Didn't they essentially pay to get to the front of the line?

What IF, this is hypothetical, when one's allocation comes up, you inform RED that you want to "voluntarily" defer until you are "up" in the 8K VV sensor queue? This has to have the potential to save RED at least some overhead costs, though I would NOT expect the delta to be financially significant, it's still feeds win-win. I know that for some of us there is also a preference to keep a working camera at hand so allowing the upgrade to be a one shot process, makes it easier to just plan a vacation or do some long form edit while camera-less for 2 weeks and then spend another week getting to know the new format, then rocking it.

Looking forward to having all that real estate and good wides. Hoping the new Canon 11-24MM f/4L rectilinear zoom covers 21.6 x 40.xx with decent corners.

I don't know, I can't believe anyone ordered a carbon weapon and didn't order a 8k at the same time, so the line must be huge for 8k. I'm in emotional doubt if I'll get my nab ordered camera this year. Weapon just seems awesome, I guess I could deal with a one month delay for getting a 8k, but couldn't emotionally deal with a 4 month delay. I did the upgrade to dragon from scarlet where I skipped getting the epic thinking that would help out RED, but it turned out that pushed me back in the the very last group to get delivery.

dragon had a short life, the longer the better for my upgrade is my current emotional view lol...as much as i want 8k

I am completely speculating when I suggest that RED are chiselling away at the noise in the electronics reading the 8K Dragon sensor - whilst trying to push the horizontal readout rate beyond 60% increase they have already hit (Assuming my understanding of the FB image is correct).

If true it would give a nice jump up in HFR goodness.

---

My earlier post in the thread about 8K upgrade stems from how manually intensive the EPIC-M was to build versus how blazingly fast the EPIC-X was to build (which I believe was <15 mins in an autonomous process).

If the rate of 8K sensors out of the oven > the upgrade rate in the 6k-to-8k process line can use them, RED could start selling New 8K Forged Weapons and if there are still some 8k love left over, offer EPIC-to-CF punters the option to get New 8K CF weapons (when they are called to their first upgrade).

I don't think this would upset the Forged 6K masses, as they would be using a different resource in RED to do their own upgrades to 8k ... and would still be in a loved-up state with their 6k Weapons ;-)

This is a clear example why it benefits to get in AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE on the newer cameras as they are announced/rolled out. I opted very early on to get a Carbon Fiber Dragon and took delivery of mine (#14) in Oct of 2013. Sure it cost me $20K more do it, but it DID pay for itself in increased rental costs and being the only fish in the sea for an extended period (and being able to work with my top-of-the-line camera for basically 3 YEARS was just icing on the cake).

And now with Weapon, it was again a NO BRAINER to opt to pay extra to get to the front of the line with my Forged Weapon. I've had my Weapon now since August and couldn't be happier. Again, higher camera rental rates as there are very few in the field and I'm enjoying all of the added perks that the new camera offers. Win Win.

If you are working regularly and/or renting your camera regularly, then the camera should pay for its own upgrades, my logic is why dick around and settle for anything less than the top of the line? I'm looking forward to about 5-6 months of Forged 6K and then hopefully another 2 years of Forged 8K and then the cycle starts again.

hmm i wonder what the wait time is now.... maybe i should just go for it...

I sent my EPIC in for Dragon upgrade in December of 2013, so almost two years of use before going in for the Weapon upgrade.

I wonder why the Weapon 8K chips are so far behind delivery schedule. I'm always happy to have RED work out all of the bugs, but the VV sensor was used o shoot movies like Guardians of the Galaxy a long time ago. I wish we could be privy to what is holding it up.

The use of 8K Dragon equipped Weapons on GOTG2 was hardly a "long time ago". IAC, the delivery schedule is painfully slow and well behind expectations. Do I share your curiosity about why? Heck ya. The delays put RED in an impossible situation. Tell their customers, and tip their hand to the competition - OR - leave their customers, and RED haters, to theorize any number of nefarious machinations going on behind the scenes. For my own sanity, I'm just taking Jarred at his word that the problem is getting big chips out of the oven with all good pixels. The apparent time constraints with shipping Scarlet-Ws and other Dragon based cameras - combined with the recent release of Helium tech - does point to Dragon production issues, but there's way too much we don't know to give such theories any real credence.
