  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So following Jarred's titillating post here:

Yup.. those are available. Turn around time is a week or two.

We're considering jumping out of the 8k VV que to go for the 8k ANA instead (as a lot of our client base uses our Kowa Anamorphics).

A couple questions about the paths and options, and also about the ANA specs:

- With all the talk about swap-able sensors coming in the near future, I could imagine that we could go for the ANA upgrade now, and then in the future pay to have the sensor swapped out for the full VV sensor (or 8k Hellium for that matter), at a cost, of course.

- Could I pay for the ANA upgrade now, and so still keep our pre-paid spot in the full VV cue, and upgrade when eventually the sensor is ready?

Specs:

- according to red.com, the only format that takes advantage of the sensor's full 6720 pixel width is the full "8k" ANA settings (using the full height in 6:5 or 4:3 modes). Are there plans for 6.7k spherical modes? Like 6.7k (or 6.5k) 2:1, WS, 16:9 etc. etc. One could always crop from the larger square recorded image, but I'm assuming a smaller rectangular format would yield not only smaller files, but perhaps better frame rates and compression ratios.

thanks

where is this post from jarred?

RVZ in Paris has one or two VV ANA (along with a full 8K VV Dragon).
Unless something changed recently in FW, it does have a 6.5K Spherical mode for all the non ANA aspect ratios you listed.

It basically is a 6.5K DRAGON with spherical lenses and acts like a 8K VV when used with anamorphic lenses... using much more of your lenses due to a much taller sensor.
you just cannot shoot 8K VV spherical with it.

I figured it would. . . It would only make sense.

Ok, decision time!

Thanks Mika!!!!!

Do you know if 5760x4320 (4:3 AR with max height) is supported (ie selectable in the menu) and with which top fps speed?

Also is 6720x2800 (WS) supported (for using the max width for spherical lenses)??

All great questions.

sorry i didnt quite understand this.Thought 8K VV Ana version were taller ?

It's the same pixel height of the 8K VistaVision Dragon sensor. It's, if I remember right, an 8K 6:5 active cut.

so if you already own VV you dont need ANA version? weird.

Huh? That's not weird at all. The entire point of Dragon 8K VV ANA is to put some sensors that didn't pass the FF testing to good use. For anamorphic productions, shooters, and houses that have lots of anamorphic glass it makes a lot of sense.

But as I understand it´s not like red have any 8k Anas in stock, or? I guess they are almost as difficult to lay hands on as the 8k FF´s, no? In other words there is no real option to get a 8k Ana now and upgrade to FF later I assume.

For the curious mind. Anyone tried to shoot 8k Helium sideways with anas? That would give when adjusted and using 2x ana something like a almost square 31.4mm x 29.90 mm equivalent sensor size.

Would be quite easy to do, simply by pulling out the pin of the mount and spin the lens 90 deg when mounting it.

Something that would be even more cool would be to do it on 8kFF with a twisted ana lens that covers it. I assume some of my B&L cinemascopes would cover as they where built for super 35mm ana so at least the longer ones would probably do cover.
