Well, I'm just hoping this camera puts some positive spotlight on Red while not rendering my Epic Dragon at less value.

I actually hope Raven isn't specifically for drone use. There are plenty of those cameras already, I would like to see an affordable RED camera that is 5 to 7 grand or less and gives us REDcode because working with CinemaDNG with my BMCC is aggravating. And please no M4/3, it defeates the purpose of an affordable RED as the most of us have EF glass and the last thing I want to do is go out and buy a bunch of glass.

Your Epic Dragon was designed to shoot Movies. Not that this camera won't be able to make films. I think there is a huge amount of videographers out there doing all sorts of creative work, and documentary story telling who will benefit from this announcement. Having these people make the crossover to red will only make them want to work with your Epic more

sounds like a different animal to me, to me this says entry level RED USERS, or like for me, Back up for smaller projects, with smaller budgets, same reliable product.

Would be great! For some projects, that's exactly what I'm looking for!

I feel like Red is doing the right thing with Raven. If they add ProRes it'll be the bomb. A 5000$ price point wouldn't hurt either :- )

Weapon = 8K - High end stuff
Raven = 4K - Indies

Thanks Jarred! Pretty interesting detail. hehe. Now imagine it's a prores-only camera, recording always 4k - downsampled from 6k. :p Just kidding.

So, to me it's a low cost Dragon, with a 4K sensor slice and up to 120fps, like it has been shown. It'll not be S35 sized as to keep costs down, but I have a feeling it will be pretty cheap. But all the Weapon accessories and their price tag will stay the way they are, so this will be a gateway to sell a lot more Weapon bits and pieces and a way to have the excellent W functionality for lees of a cost. The huge question is weather it'll do ProRes, R3D or both. I hope for both, but for low cost and quick turnaround, I really really hope it has ProRes.
I do commend RED for the name. Raven is very cool.

Please give us Redcode... I like ProRes, don't get me wrong, but I love what I can do with Redcode.
Figures crossed for an entry-level Red. I am so ready to join the family as an owner.

I said it in the other thread too, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Raven sensor was actually a result of using 8k VV sensors that do not pass QC. They could be cut up into four 4k sensors (three good, and the one bad quadrant removed) reducing costs all around and allowing RED to focus on one 8k fabrication line, whilst having a place for the chips to go if they don't pass.

To recap so far here's what we know:
4K only
Dragon sensor
Metal housing with built-in microphone
WiFi
MiniMag SSD

Likely developed in conjunction with using the new 4.7" monitor and 120GB Mini Mag. Hopefully that will be a package deal.

Am I missing anything? This all is pretty exciting to me if, indeed, it is an entry-level cam.

If this really is a prosumer camera then it should difenitly have all the "prosumer" funtcions of other cameras on the market

1. Autofocus

2. Shoots real stills ( Not screen grabs )

3. Minimum 48fps at 4K

4. 35mm or greater sensor

5. Prores 422

If not then why not just buy a Sony A7s ?

Smart thinking - that is pretty much Micro 4/3.

If that is true, then this adds more weight to the speculation that the Raven is Micro 4/3.

I don't really have a pet theory, but I can see a picture emerging, albeit still speculative.

This is from Phil's big Dragon info thread on the Dragon forum, showing where Micro 4/3 fits compared to 4K:

Well I called it. 4K locked.

My next big question is is the mount type MFT? The answer may kill off the next big round of dreamers.

If it is MFT or E-Mount or Weird-Mount, I would hope/think that RED would have official Raven-Mount-to-PL/EF/F adapters... It just seems weird, as having a swappable mount would cost *less* than having a fixed mount, and they already have the swappable mounts made/readily available... It's one of those "intentionally limiting functionality" things that RED say they don't do.

I would be very surprised if they package the red touch and mini mag into the price of this camera.. The good news for new red guys who dont have a lot of accessories is the camera will work with exsisting monitors and accessories many videographers have already acquired. I've said this before but Foolcontrol is an amazing way to navagate the settings/controls for the RED DSMC system. for about $200 you can do what the redtouch can, without the monitor part.. Heck im selling a smallHD 4.4 monitor with hdmi loop through and a viewfinder which would work very well with this camera for about $300

so even if no package deal, and $$ was an issue, what i would do would be to get 2 V-mount batteries with a charger, for $500, a 240GB mini mag for $1400 (save $300 on 2 120GB, which will prob record allllll day at 4K) Fool Control for $230 and use an old monitor, until i had enough to get the RED touch or new EVF, then get fancy with a new cage and handle etc..

at any rate thats about $2000 for accessories that will get you shooting..

maybe im wrong and there will be a few treats that come with the camera, which would be awesome

Wasn't 120fps @4K and a non-changable mount confirmed too?
