  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K Monitors...

So I would assume that the redcode for 4K media distribution will be pushed by Red to become the next standard over current distribution like mp4 BluRay?
I think it would be wise to try and standardize it before someone else comes along and we have years of "HD-DVD vs BluRay" battles all over again.

Why not use DCP as the standard.
Jpeg2000 variable compression rates.
Pretty standard.

I wish Red was coming out with a 4K monitor as well as a projector. I have no room for a projector. But a 4K panel around 50" would be perfect!

You'd want a 55 or greater. That is where the payoff is. It looks okay at 50 but go a bit higher and it's stunning.

What is the best value 4K monitor out right now? Going to poke around online but i'm sure a lot of others have done their research.

(just for badass tv watching, not a reference monitor)

Ask in two years. Right now, that is a question that really has no answer since there are no real choices on the consumer side of things apart from some stuff you can order if you happen to be a high-roller.

It doesn't mean anything different for the average consumer.. Most current shows will be canceled by the time 4k displays are selling for under $2k...

There are so many 4K monitors (TVs) being released that we can hardly keep track. I wonder what that means to shows shot on 1080P?

Jim

I will be like watching shows recorded on 2" quad from the 70's on a 1080p set, just plain soft.

@Lewis-M Soucy

Hahahaha, this is gold

But that's your fault, you went to the fnac....:) Once, I askesd a seller who is supposed to sell Adobe CS products how to cut an image in Illustrator. This one clearly told me that he never used an Adobe CS product...

Also, they don't sell 4K cameras (i am talking of the price), they sell at 4K cameras that normally cost 2k

It means that Europe can by-pass 1080 and go straight to 4k.

It also means my TV shows will have a shorter life span, and my future ones should sell well because of a shortage of 4k content.

In order for 4k to open up on TV, we need to address the post production workflow for 4k, it's too slow right now, and not enough competition. If .r3d files became the standard of Avid 4k, and adreniline could also work like a rocket card, that will help. Also we need to get parties like Matrox and AJA producing cards that work nativily with 4k raw that will help conciderably. The current situation of processing in Redcine Pro, down-converting, then finding some way to master is 4k is difficult for a large amount of media. Also how do you deliver? I'm not sure Redray is meant to be a 4k deck as well?

I don't really understand the 4k work flow yet, so please can others way in here? Maybe a new thread.

But so far I've heard there is no such a 4K DCP standard yet, and certainly there's no s3d 4K standard yet, even not in post.

In researching this I spoke to the engineer for a local theater that has 4K Sony projectors, and he confirmed they had 4K DCPs being used for a current movie. He walked over and looked at the filenames on the server while I was on the phone with him.

Michael Cioni had a recent blog about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which he worked on, that discussed 4K distribution.

Not true... I like Pong :)

I'm going to make a 4K Pong game as soon as I get a 4K monitor, just to spite 1080p...

I wonder how most gadget-savvy consumers will feel about 1080p here in a few months, now that their iPhone and latest Android phones shoot 1080p video... The iPad3 and upcoming Macbook Air will both have greater than 1080p resolution, many new tablets, PC "UltraBooks" and compact notebooks being shown at CES have high-DPI displays with greater than 1080p resolution.

Of course there is a 4K DCP standard.
I, however, would like to see 1080p50 as the standard for TV broadcast, and 4K 50p as the cinema standard. 4K in the home seems overboard to me. I have a 720p projector at home and most people are already really impressed by the quality. I believe in 4K, for theaters, but I think we really need to push for higher frame rates, and ideally a uniform rate worldwide...
Cheers,
Damien

OK... Then what about when no one shoots 1080p anymore and cinema cameras are pushing into 8K territory? Only a matter of time, you know...

A good 720p projector can look nice... However, we have to consider two things here. Most current HD distribution doesn't live up to 1080p quality, so 720p isn't a bad a way to show it. And 1080p isn't that big of a jump over 720p anyway. 4K is a jump of 4 times the number of pixels in the same space compared to 1080p. The difference between 2K/1080p and 4K/QHD is night and day. People can see it. Even people who can't see the benefits of 1080p over 720p. ...I guess I should say "most" people. Some just don't seem to have properly functioning eyeballs.

I don't think it means much. I hate being able to see every single wrinkle on someone's face, or clearly seeing the layers of make-up on an actor. 4K only amplifies this problem.
Nature/docs however, 4k hell yeah. :- )

Released already or on the Road ?
Problem is how to feed those monitor with contentment ... again RCX-PRO and RR still is the cheaper option ... and it cannot playback finished shows etc...

unless Red launch the Red Ray (by the way what happened to the RR ray ???)

thanks
