  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K Delivery... get ready.

Im doing two shots for a feature right now, with a lot of layers greenscreen and quite big durations (7 and 10 minutes long) Im comping everything in flame 2012 on a Z800 with dual fiber stone disc array... All I can tell you guys is that yes, detail is high... but the render times are tremendus. I would figure the whole job would take me between 2 and 5 days in HD.... as I now do it in 4k I hope to finnish before christmas....
So the difference in post cost does not only rise by a factor of 4 when going from HD to 4k, it actually increase exponentially. For this job it's worth the extra effort but I think the leap form HD/2k to 4k will have to push up the post budgets quite a lot or the price for 10 times faster discs, computers etc will have to fall like... the price for epics or more. But I do not think any of these to are likely to happen any time soon so I see a huge resistance for 4k finnishing in this regard. or what do you guys think?

I'm wondering if these are for consumers or theater owners?

Thomas - If I understand the whole REDRay product line, the answer is "both." The Player is going to be just that, for ~$1000 you get a device with various inputs and outputs that plays proprietary RED encoded files, along with some other third party codecs. It will play out up to 4K stereo, 3D resolution. This unit would seem appropriate for consumers and for professional use for post production monitoring (I think).

As for the Projector (laser) - I believe it will be somewhat modular and expandable. It will get its signal from a REDRay Player and project the images in (I think I recall) up to 4K, stereo 3D. The "power" (and price) of the projector can be configured to meet the needs of a videophile's home theatre all the way up to a large venue commercial theatre. That's what I recall.. :-)

I believe Terry is correct. One unit for home, multiples arrayed for larger venues and brightness.

I cannot wait for my home projection 4K theater/edit bay!

Wow, Looks like consumers are going to be getting to view 4k contents before commercial cinemas. lol

I am super excited for this. One question though: Why is the Epic so small and able to record RAW 5K in real time, yet the Red Ray player is so much bigger? Is it because the debayering going on in the Red Ray player is full quality, while the Epic just needs to record the RAW data off the sensor, and doesn't need to debayer at full quality in-camera?

EDIT: Looked at the second assembly line photo Jarred posted, and the players are actually a lot smaller than they looked in the first photo!

Check out this article ... when/where did Jarred post the quoted comments?!

"For Redray, we have partnered with one of the most innovative content distribution companies that both content owners and viewers have ever seen," Land wrote, "and we built it right into Redray."

Oh man if this means what I think it does... then RED is a lot smarter than they have pretended to be.

23 more days until details! FUUUUUCK! Look how sexy this unit is!

Interesting, I'm in the pre-production on a 15 minute short with quite a lot of VFX, were I hope to rent your Milo b.t.w., but I'm trying to make up my mind about whether we should finish in 2k stereo or 4k stereo...

The data-rates required for for 4k stereo in DaVinci would probably be quite tremendous... what kind of band-width would we need for an efficient workflow do you think?

Just wondering if any potential Prores / DnXHD module could also record in the streaming codec ?
Is this even possible ? it could open up a whole range of options for Red !

I doubt encoding to the RedRay delivery codec will be anywhere close to realtime. But that would be amazing if it was. And a Red Rocket 2 with RedRay hardware encoding built-in.

This image does not look like the ones Jarred posted in page one?

I'm happy they have changed the look. That red light in the middle of the prototype is not helping the look of that thing

Yeah it looks nothing like that.

here is a little video action.

With the projector and Red Ray I may need to start construction on the basement in the next month or so! I might add a couple of D-Box platforms unless Red is planning some kind of crazy virtual reality pods to go along with the rest of the awesomeness they keep announcing.

Thx jarred ! Nice to see some action! Now about that partner you mentioned ...;)

Btw I really like its design. It became nice and slim! Good job you guys!
