  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K Delivery... get ready.

I have a question. Is the Red Ray meant for professional use or is this the device I would want to get if I were to buy one of the 4K TVs that are beginning to emerge in the market. In other words, is red ray supposed to replace the blu-ray?

Both and more. It's meant for the full spectrum from homes through proffesional preview screens up to huge cinema screens.

Does anyone know how the new Sony 4K displays will handle output from the RedRay when it's outputting 4K @60p? According to the Sony specs, it appears the display will only handle 4K up to 30p.

So if a 4K 60p signal is presented, would that mean an 'out of range' display would show or would the display revert to a more manageable 2K @60p?

I realize this may not even be a question that can be answered at this point, but I thought someone may have tried it.

You need to use dual HDMI to support 3840x2160 at 60p. (Quad if you want that in 3D) The Sony will only accept a single HDMI, which limits you to 3840x2160 up to 30p or 4096x2160 @ 24p.

I guess the question then becomes how soon will we see 4K @60p content and is this a valid enough concern to skip the first gen 4K displays?

The existence of 4K 60p content is not the issue, I have some myself. The issue is what system, server/display, can actually play it back in it's native form.

As noted, the earliest consumer offerings from Sony are limited by the HDMI 1.4a spec. The interconnects continue to be a serious hinderance and a standard with the headroom to handle 120fps 4K and 60fps stereo 4K over a single cable would really help.

I think there's 4K 60p content now actually :) When will it become a standard or when will there be a good quantity of 60p content? I'd say there will be some by November. A bit more in about 18-24 months. Games and movies first. Sports broadcasting I think will focus on 60 fps UHD eventually once they figure out the best way to shoot and broadcast that.

Should that stop people from buying a 30p set? I don't think so. But that's just me.

I will be purchasing a REDRAY and a 60p "capable" monitor later this year, but I'm (we are) on the content creation and mastering side and desire that. Some projects I work on don't come up for 2 or 3 years and I have to stay a bit more future minded with what I purchase.
 
They should really make multi-connections part of the standard or just put it in those first-generation 4k-TVs.
1xHDMI1.4 isn't even enough to handle 3D movies in 4k. I also don't think 60/50p is that far away... Once we will have 4k-live-TV and game consoles that can do 4k, we will need displays that support more than 30fps.

BTW, one HDMI2.0-connection will not be fast enough to allow us watching "The Hobbit" in 4k/3D/HFR.

I like the fact that REDRAY has 4 connectors, wouldn't it be great to have TVs that use them to allow full power 4k? ;)
 
Multi cable solutions may be the only deployable solution in the near term. That said, the entire industry, both on the professional and consumer side, would really benefit from a robust hard wire interconnection standard that could handle serious throughput. Everything else will go wireless anyway, so while all the players are jousting over proprietary codecs/standards could we just have a fat pipe?

I'm thinking 10GigE meets HDMI 2.0, or maybe DisplayPort meets Thunderbolt, ...

I think Jim or Jared mentioned that the Toshiba screens were the only one that could handle 4K 60 but you have to have their breakout box to make it work.

Can handle all of the information.
Getting less expensive all the time.
Future proof.
Distance - no problem.

Note: Why distance? Think of digital signage in large venues (such as an airport). Stack of linked REDRAY's could feed a huge video wall. Or a cinema house serving 2K or 4K to different rooms from a central area.

Wrong thread to bring up the possibilities for the camera end of things...
(So I'll save those thoughts)
 
A bit of threadjacking , but still on topic... I was one of tbose that was holding on a redray purchase, but a recent important project came up and redray is perfect for it: video instalation with 3 4k panels. Anyone knows if these LG's or Sony's can be videowalled? Can a redray power 4 1080p panels to make one huge 4K screen? Is there software capable of this? More importantly, when can we encode for .red?

You know I was just thinking (always dangerous) about the Sony 84" 4K display I've seen several times. The demo loop I've seen certainly looks like it has pieces of 'live' camera action among the material. I'm assuming this was 4K 60p content from the server that's used in these demos. But then I was thinking if that was even possible given the fact that the display can't handle 4K 60p. So now I'm wondering what was the makeup of the 'live' sequences in the demo loop (possibly 30p)?? :shocked:

Player will then split that up into four 1080p outputs on playback. One intresting pint about this is the four 1080p panels can be in any configurations - i.e. make a rectangular, horizontal linear, circular arrangement of panels and animate the video sources accordingly.

A single cable to 4K displays is typically the way they will be connected - certainly that's the way we connect to both the Sony 4K LCD TV and VPL-VW1000 projector.

We plan to do this full Epic, avoiding after effects- but if needed so be it. Could a R3d output of our sequence from Premiere work for encoding .red files in Redcine X? Haven't touched Premiere for a while and don't even know if this is possible, or do we have to go Tiff? Sequence file size not an issue. We just want to creat an absolute "Wow" effect to our audience!

It's four 1080p panels per Player, but the Player also includes an external Sync input ( RS170A Genlock ) so that will in due course allow us to lock all the video outputs from multiple players to the same Sync source - such as an AJA Gen 10 or equivalent.

Thanks for the info Stuart. Are we close to release of both encoding and the release of Redray? Project in May...
