  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I think it sucks that we can't record different frame-rate projects on a single Red drive. If I collect footage I usually want to collect both 30fps and 24fps, but I can't do that with the latest firmware builds. The option of carrying a second hard drive and switching between the two is way too much of a pain to be a feasible option.

Whats your major deliverable? i'm guessing broadcast, possibly stock footage, hence the need for two rates? My suggestion would be to just shoot at a 23.98 project base rate, and then shoot offspeed at 30 fps, and then conform your off speed footage to a 29.97 playback rate in post.

EDIT - To clarify, by conform I just mean change the meta data, so if delivering quicktime using cinema tools, etc. Alternatively you could render out image sequences and reconform with the correct frame rate from those. Either way you get the result you are asking for all on one drive, absolutely no in terms of the final footage.

You have never been able to run mixed project TIME BASE... it's fundamental to the way the RED ONE file system works.

you should never shoot with just one drive...ever.

Do you know how long it takes to swap out drives? Unmounting, powering down, removing cables, getting the drive out of the cradle, packing away the drive, getting the other drive, putting it into the cradle, reattaching the cable, powering up... it's not a convenient solution.

I'm shooting stock footage lately, but also I'm going to be doing some short documentaries. Let's say I want to record 120fps 2k for the slow-mo, and also 30fps 4k for the regular stuff. I don't think I can do that on one drive with the current firmware, but perhaps I'm wrong about that and I've missed some component in this puzzle. In earlier firmware builds it seemed to work, I was able to put different project speeds onto one drive.

Vari speed

Vari speed

Mark this you can and you could always do. If your frame base is the same you can change your varispeed settings within the same drive or cf card. So if you want to shoot 4K 30 fr/sec you can, 3K 60 fr/sec you can. 4K 30 fr/sec... etc. but your time base should stay the same.

And why are you powering down and removing cables? You don't need to do that.

Just press and hold Undo, Press Exit, Remove from cradle and plug in the new drive.

And yes you can shoot all frame szies/rates on the same drive so long as the project time base remains the same.

1. As the others said: Why powerdown? Never ever done...
2. You can have a base framerate and shoot anything in vari-speed, without changing magazine.
3. Why would you like two project framerates for the same shoot? (just curious)
4. If you need say 25/30, you can set one as the project framerate and still shoot the other. Then you can re-time the base framerate with cinematools (if you indeed want different base/reference framerates...)

:emote_headwall: OMG, dude. Swapping drives should take about 5 seconds for the swap itself. No need to power-down. No need to swap cables.

You could even mount both drives on the camera at the same time (i.e. put one on an ET shock mount and the other in the standard Red cradle) and simply eject one, then plug the other in.
You'd have to take a few seconds anyway to reset the project frame rate in the menu.
Cheers,
Harry

I think Mark may be mixing up time base and vari speed recording. No you cannot, and have never been able to change your time base on the same drive (ie 23.976 to 29.976 time base). However you can shoot at one time base and change frame rates to your hearts desire. From the sound of this thread, it might be a good time to check out your red user manual.

Ah, I think I see where I went wrong in regards to this concept. I had thought all project settings were fixed for a magazine, but it seems only the time base is fixed... the project resolution can change from clip to clip. So that clears up the issue for me.

And I'm happy to hear the hard drive can be swapped without powering down the camera. I get nervous removing devices while power is running, having had bad experiences with attempting to hot-swap computer peripherals in the past, but I guess if Red says it's safe then I won't worry about it. Of course, I only own one Red Drive, so I guess I don't have to worry about it anyway.
