  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st Scarlet....

Low light and/ or overcranked test?

Low light and/ or overcranked test?

Thanks for all you've done thus far Tonaci!...Any progress on your low light stuff? Also would love to see a few over cranked shots lower resolutions, should you have time. Thanks again.

I am Loving those skin tones! Such a greet look and feel to the video, I am going to go back and watch it again!

Great stuff.

at around 0:16 it looks there is some "ghosting" (?) along the edge of the guys cheek. Can anyone else see that? am i going mad?

Yeah, I see it too, but only in full screen mode. Not at all when I keep the player on small size. It's more likely a Vimeo frame rate artifact, I don't think it's on the footage. Plus Tonaci confirmed, and he is scrubbing the master file.

BTW, thanks for sharing Tonaci!

Nice work Tonaci. If you've got a second, I'm curious what ND filters you're using.

I'm not sure but if you're seeing what I think you guys are seeing it may simply be an optical illusion (possibly caused by the combo of the moving of the face, the camera pan and LCD screen refresh?).

I'm stepping through the Vimeo file frame by frame in Quicktime Player and there's no "ghosting" that I can see - only a slight motion blur.

HI Tonaci,

Scarlet images look great. But the honesty in the faces is FAR more compelling.
Together - very beautiful.

Thank you

Best Wishes

Tonaci,

Do you have any idea the weight of the scarlet-x, sans lens, with side handle, LCD, and Redvolts? I'm trying to figure out if I can get a steadicam that only supports 10LB or if I absolutely have to get one that holds more.

Thanks

With a Canon lens..it hovers 10-11lbs. This is with camera body, ssd, lcd mounted on top, side handle, one red volt and lightweight canon prime.

Sounds like if you use a belt clip with v-mount instead of the side handle with redvolt we should be able to use a small steadicam. Nice.

lol, right at the limit! Thanks Tonaci. Does anyone know if a stedicam rated for 10lb has a hard cut off at that weight? If not, what occurs as you overload it? Does it just reduce its stability?

overload is usually increases stability, and most units are pretty safe in the range of +5Lb

Adding 50% more weight is not recommended or the weight recommendation would be that much higher. Going bare bones Scarlet using a lightweight Canon cheap' lens may cut it, but my recommendation is to buy a better system that can handle the weight. 10lbs is not a lot and if you are serious about doing work other than yourself, save the money and get a good rig that can handle more weight.

i'm a member of the Steadicam Operators Association, SOA. I don't use Steadicam everyday, but I'm familiar with the limits and it takes practice to get clean shots and not just practice shooting with it, but practice balancing it with setup. In fact that is the key. Having those extra pound could work if properly adjusted, but it will not increase stability unless added to the top and bottom of the unit, however the Sled may be able to handle the weight, but the arm may not. Just buy something that won't become obsolete in the next few years and something that will work for you and you in the future.

Tonaci, THANKS a lot !

I have a question and I may not be the only one. This video looks INSANE. Wow ! I have never noticed such a filmic look - even on the EPIC. I can't really explain it - but the 24p feeling is awesome. I repeat, I newer saw something so filmic and organic, besides 35mm. Maybe the motion blur ?

What did you do to the footage ? Did you add some new filmlook effect in RCX or FCPX ?

Just incredible.

Am I the only one here seeing this ?

one word.. Alchemy. =)
